An Austrian man has chosen to have his hand cut off so that it can be replaced with a bionic prosthesis.

Last year, Patrick, a 24-year-old Austrian, decided to have his dysfunctional hand amputated and replaced with a bionic hand. He lost the use of his left hand after being electrocuted at work.

Here he demonstrates the extra movement his new bionic hand has given him, opening a bottle and tying his shoelaces, and tests a prototype hand which will give him additional wrist movement.

Thats actually what it is, sort of. The arm was probably developed by MicroTransponder which is a neurotechnology company. The company founder has been contributing to the game in his spare time. I came across this when I was reading his blog. I've been following some of the work he does on other projects.

To relax, I’ve been working on a project with the team at Eidos- Montreal since 2008. The creative team asked me to help bring a scientific approach to the Deus Ex : Human Revolution (www.deusex.com) video game release. I was a huge fan of Deus Ex and Deus Ex: Invisible War, so I was really happy to oblige. I’ve been working with the team to help “project” the state of the art in mechanical augmentation with neuroprosthetics. Since there is an element of science fiction in all research projects, I’ve had alot of fun helping bring some rigor to the game.

Because we’re dealing with a prequel, we made every effort to differentiate ourselves from Deus Ex’s nano-based augs. With every enhancement, we sought to remind the Player that he’s in the second half of the 2020?s.

We wanted the technology should feel much more advanced than what we currently have around us, of course, but it should still feel antiquated compared to Deus Ex’s technological advancements. Deus Ex dealt more with the fusion of man and machine; a perfect symbiotic relationship between the organic and the mechanic. For Deus Ex: Human Revolution, our mechanical augmentations were supposed to be a meld between the two, an imperfect joining in which meat and machine are forced to coexist.

In the time period during which the game is set, augmentations are just being introduced to the masses. We must not forget that these augmentations are only a few steps above prosthetics in development today. Therefore, it’s normal for them to feel rugged, unpolished, with still a lot of room for improvement. I’m hoping to release the background on every augmentation that is utilized in the game.

This post is about the agility augmentation. It is fitting that in the video, we are seeing certain patients “choose” to be enhanced from a disease state.

We had to explain the agility-related abilities for the main character, Reflex Booster (implanted martial techniques, increased reflex and autonomous response), Jump Enhancement (high jump) and Sprint Enhancement (speed).

The vestibular system is a complex system of inputs and outputs, mediated by reflex actions in the spinal cord, inner ear, sensory nerve inputs and ultimately conscious control by the cortex. As the Japanese and US populations began to age, balance disorders and the associated costs with broken hips led to an enormous amount of development of vestibular augmentation. The core technology for these augmentations came from the space program. Ultimately, a distributed set of disc implants which can both receive and send pressure signals to a series of integrated circuits in the ear will allow for increased agility and corporeal control. The player can augment through level 2 which is a standard augmentation that electrically stimulates afferent neurons.

This replaces absent sensory function by providing stimulation that modulates above and below a baseline established with the head stationary. The advanced level is turned on only when necessary, for example, to override natural variations and enable enhanced control over limbs that do not obey the standard degrees of freedom of the muscles and bones of the arms and legs.
