Instagram is for Faggots

  1. Instagram (owned by Facebook) are changing their user policy so that it enables them to legally own all the photos you upload, AND SELL THEM WITHOUT PAYING OR EVEN NOTIFYING YOU. They can sell them to other companies to be used in advertising material, that includes any pictures of your children.

Does anyone here use instagram? I got intot it a few months ago but now I think I'll just delete my account and the app, I have other photo editing apps with focus adjust and filters that don't require me to upload them to their servers. If you do use it, will this new policy make you think twice about using it?

Edit: The only way to opt out is to delete your Instagram account by January the 16th 2013.

  2. Re: Instagram owns your photos, and reserves the right to sell them behind your back

To be honest, I'd be surprised if any of the photos on instagram would be worth using.

  3. Re: Instagram owns your photos, and reserves the right to sell them behind your back

As an example a hotel in Hawaii, for instance, could write a check to Facebook to license photos taken at its resort and use them on its Web site, in TV ads, in glossy brochures, and so on -- without paying any money to the Instagram user who took the photo. You could argue that once you upload an image to the internet it's fair game, but copyright is a thing.

    Only hipster douchebags use Instagram.

  5. Re: Instagram owns your photos, and reserves the right to sell them behind your back

But with all those crap filters, all the photos would make it look like the brochure is 20 years old.

Copyright is a thing, yes, but you've already provided Instagram with a license to use your images as they see fit by accepting their T&Cs.

    Also; Instagram is for fags.

I actually have the exact same views as chi about instagram. 97% of all of the photos I've seen from instagram have heavy filters on them for no good reason. if I were part of some marketing team, I'd deem every single one of those photos unusable.

  7. Re: Instagram owns your photos, and reserves the right to sell them behind your back

Instagram is used a lot by Twitter users. I'm going to side with the evil corporation on this one, fuck those Twitter people.

  14. Re: Instagram owns your photos, and reserves the right to sell them behind your back

Please. I cannot tell you how many websites I've been to that have those damn adverts on the side that claim to allow you to turn photos into cartoons, and not once have I been inclined to do so.

On a related note instagram has decided to backpadal and remove the language that would allow them to sell photos saying they have no plans to sell photos. The forum breathes a sigh of relief.

  16. Instagram have changed their minds..

  17. Yeah they won't sell them. They still own them though, but that doesn't bother me. On the whole though I don't think I really minded them having the ability to sell photos becasue they almost certainly wouldn't anyway. I think it just got people riled up because it all seemed a bit underhanded.

  18. So did you quit Instagram in the end?

  19. Nah. I figured no one would want my pictures, and even if they did there's nothing on there I would want kept secret, hence it's on the internet.

  20. Damn, was hoping my amateur model photos would be picked up by someone in the biz.
