Maybe he's referring to the Left 4 Dead and Portal games? Sure, they're not quite up to the standard of Half-Life, but few games are, and they're still pretty damn good. Way better than what 99.9% of game developers are putting out. Portal is one of the most innovative games to come out in years, and Left 4 Dead is great with a good group of friends. It's baffling to me that anyone could not like Valve. They're easily the best developer in the business. And they make these awesome games while keeping Steam going.
Hmm from what I've seen, the Left 4 Dead and Portal franchises has been taken in quite well with the PC gamer community. To this day, Valve is still giving free DLC for L4D2 fans. Let's not also forget the free awesome game they gave us, Alien Swarm. Hmm speaking of which, I got the first Portal free from them too.. Valve is one of those good guy companies that makes it hard to talk bad about them. Well, except for their super long development cycles for Half-Life. I can see people hating Valve if they're one of those old fashioned people who prefer the disconnect between internet and games. I've seen a ton of people complain that publishers are moving towards Steam activation when they buy a physical copy. IMO, they're doing you a favor because you keep your physical copy and have that online download you have access to. Plus it was the publisher's choice to do this and not Valve.. eh, I guess you can't win over all the people sometimes.
I seem to remember Pdraggy being some kind of mountain man who lives in the woods in Washington or Oregon or something and him saying that he's still on 56K or DSL lite, which might explain the aversion to Steam.
uh... ok let me take away some of the more complicated terms... by crap I simply meant ideals NOT a product of any kind. It's really starting to look like Valve (through Steam) is starting a coup (coo?? not a coupe seville...) through this new found 'ownership' of pc gaming it seems to lay claim too. As if they hold the kill switch so WE better do as they say!! And in truth they DO hold the kill switch it's called STEAM. They don't want any competitors like Origin so I truly believe they DID say 'no Origin UNLESS you let us control your DLC somehow' this makes sense to me, I me GFWL buckled, and like you said nobody cares about it on PC anyway. Origin is on the same track, if they allow Steam to bully their way any way they want. SO conspiracy theories aside, you DON'T give one company absolute free reign YOU JUST DON'T!! Yes, Valve has been key in keeping the PC gameing scene open but it's like crack dealers. They give you a little of what you want (Indy games) and what, you let them step all over you!! C'mon. Valve I got my eyes on you o.0 no one entity can handle all of that load and not blow it now and than. I know, I tried <.< You all may be comfortable with making another Micro$haft but I aint into that. Steam is cool and all but some of you make it sound like they can do no wrong. (I'm actually just playin a mountain man on TV my friend)
They got me on 3 points, I do have a slow DSL connection so really, Steam selling 12 gigabyte games is pretty harsh on me :/ also I do live in the boonies so I could give two shits about Best Buy taking down PC Games for retail. And thirdly I HATE this digital crap, so really the 2nd point really saddens me but really, I HATE THIS DIGITAL CRAP!! It works for the few, but not the many. I don't know how Europe or Australia deals with this where they put up with caps either.
Did you just say the few, but not the many? hehe, I think Steam speaks for itself when the many is what made it what it is today. So that would mean you would be the few. You just said conspiracy theories aside, and then you based your whole opinion on Steam on your conspiracy theory. And I think your last post pretty much sums up why you're nitpicking on Steam (and what I kind of suspected as there is a recurring theme among Steam haters). But it's pretty telling when people actually WANT Steam integration in their games. Don't forget what I said before, people can vote with their wallets. Steam is there as a service, and the publishers pick them to distribute their games. Hate on your game's publisher for picking Steam.
That's because my conspiracy theory is based on truth. Steam is pretty much the ONLY way into pc gaming now right? If Steam goes down PC gaming goes down. Do I WANT steam? Sure, if it's the only way.... Just like I'm saying to just get BF3 if you want BF3! I hate to hear all this bitchin about oh BF3 did this or that so I'm not getting it!! Or ME3 did this or that and though I REALLY want ME3 I AM NOT GETTING IT! That's just stupidity. Talk with your wallet? How about this? We talk with our minds and heart. So our heart says it's ok to hype ME3 up at 60 bucks but not at 70?? It's ok to hype BF3 up when it's controlled by a third party, but not when it's controlled by the FIRST party?? Sure you got a wallet, but you got a mind too, think about it.
I'm not sure what you're getting at but we are basically saying the same thing. If people talk with their wallet, that basically means they are not buying the product due to extreme dissatisfaction for said product. And this is before they even try the product. People don't care about a product because it's on Origin instead of Steam? That'll be the reason why they won't buy the product, as it's on Origin. They just voted with their wallet. A product didn't sell at $70 instead of $60? People just voted with their wallet. That sends a heavy message to the service provider (or publisher) since all they really see in the end is money.
So you really are a technophobe with bad internet who lives in the boonies. That explains it. And Europe and Australia actually have much faster, more reasonably priced internet access than we do in the states.
I don't know what that means, but by technophobe I hope that doesn't mean I'm like afraid of technology cuz I'm not... just technology made to progress us in the wrong direction. Not scared of it, just don't like it. The vibe I get from our European cousins is that they don't really use steam so yeah. PC gaming is pretty much dead to them all I hear is PS3 and the occasional Xbox. The internet might be faster (depending on time of day so I gather) but the data transferred is the same, and a cap is a cap.... unless it's a soft cap... @Khaid, agreed, if it's BF3 or ME3... and you shouldn't have to get it if it's Crysis 2 and you really don't want Crysis 2... or you really don't want said games but I'm gathering most here would be up for said games. I'm talking about this technophobe here that is scerd of Origin and won't even purchase his beloved BF3 on the best platform for it.
I half agree. I don't like the fact that they keep pumping out all sorts of games (that to be fair are good games) when they know everyone is wanting Half Life 3. However I don't dislike the company because they do good work. Steam is simply an outstanding service.
Half-Life 2 was also in development for what seemed like an eternity (1998-2004), and it was worth the wait, so Valve can take all the time they need.
This game was terrible. If you paid me $20, I'd consider playing it for an hour. It was VERY GOOD in creating an immersion environment, but the gameplay was boring.
Yep, I said the same thing a few pages back before Pdraggy derailed the thread with his anti-Steam stupidity. This game had a spooky atmosphere, good music, nice lighting, and a decent story, but none of that matters because ALAN WAKE IS FUCKING TERRIBLE AS AN ACTUAL GAME! It's like they got so obsessed with trying to replicate the feel of a Stephen King or David Lynch movie, they forgot they were making a game and not a movie or TV show. The gimmick with the dark shields got old quick, and the guns sucked and felt horrible to use. There are only a few enemy types, and killing them is very repetitive. It's baffling that a game with such terrible gunplay was made by the same people who made Max Payne. I found myself just playing it for the story and creepy atmosphere. As an alternative to watching a horror movie, I'd give it an 8/10. It really does feel like a Stephen King or David Lynch movie in places. As an actual game, I'd give it a 3/10, and that's probably being generous.
