AMD appears to be making some pretty substantial architecture advancements due within the next few years. They announced dedicated hardware components for path tracing and substantial improvements in efficiency for ML and ray tracing functionality. Their collaboration with Sony seems to have been fruitful so far. Sony's Mark Cerny seems particularly gleeful about breakthroughs they have been making, one of which is a substantial PSSR update on the way to the PS5 Pro soon. Usually I'd be skeptical about any corporate talking head making claims without showing anything concrete, but this guy has been among the most successful console hardware architects in history (probably +200 million sold and counting) and isn't just a bean counter with an accounting or finance degree. He got mocked for pushing SSD advancements 5 years ago, but he was pretty on point about that (some games load up from startup to playing within a few seconds), and the PS5 has been quite successful despite launching during a global pandemic with massive component shortage problems. It's curious the Marble Madness creator has gone on to be this successful in hardware design.
