  1. Yea I read the news for the airpods earlier and I've never been so disappointed about earbuds ever in my life before now. This is a new feeling. The worst part is that they have new ETA.. which could mean a 2017 wait.. ughhhh.

And yeah, it's still pretty hard to get the 7 pluses. Tons of people are still waiting for their preorders to get fulfilled.

  2. Google is showing an interesting search trend. About 10 days before every new iPhone releases there is a spike in people searching for "iPhone slow". Feel free to make your own conspiracy theory.

*iphone 4 released June 24, 2010, "iphone slow" suddenly spikes on June 21
*iphone 4s released October 14, 2011, uptick begins Oct 4, spikes Oct 11
    *iphone 5 released Sept 21, 2012, upticks 9/12, spikes 9/19
    *iphone 5s released Sept 20, 2013, upticks 9/10, spikes 9/18
    *iphone 6 released Sept 19, 2014, upticks 9/9, spikes 9/17

Here's my personal experience with the same year phones (2012). The Samsung Galaxy S III and iphone 5.

I had the pleasure of using a guy's carrier bloated version of the galaxy s3 which i think was still on android 4.3 because... well android. Holy crap that thing should've just been thrown away. Things literally didn't launch until a full second (sometimes 2sec) after you tapped it. Forget about even browsing mobile sites with mobile ads. That thing would just lock up. Dude probably didn't get another phone because he didn't know any better. He probably got so used to the speed over time that he thought it was normal.

Meanwhile, my mom's iphone 5 was on ios 10 for 3 weeks running perfectly fine before i got her new iphone 7.

I think for the most part, alot of people have issues because they don't really understand how these things work and do all sorts of bad practices on their phones. For example, I see these people leave all sorts of carrier bloat on their phones and most of the time, even enable them when the apps are disabled by default. News tickers, stock tickers, "virus" scanners, all along the notification bar running in the background. For ios, I've noticed apps slowly getting huge bloated cache data after time. I looked on my sister's iphone 4s one time when she complained about running out of space. For some reason, Facebook bloated up to over 2GB of cached data. I never found a way to just delete the cached data so I just delete entire apps and redownload them.

  4. I don't think it's a conspiracy per say. The new iOS ships near the new phone release. Typical it runs fine on one iteration old hardware but there will be some slowness on 2+ years old devices. I'm sure there is a certain degree of planned obsolescence to it.

But I much prefer it to Android OEMs unplanned obsolescence. Samsung updates lasted 6 months between their 2 flagships at one point. Although in fairness they have gotten much better now.

  5. iPhone 5/iPhone 5s is the line between 32 bit and 64 bit chipsets, so if iOS 10 is running fine on the 5, then they can't really be in that much of a hurry to make older phones obsolete.

  6. What are the recommended data settings for international travel?

I did a iCloud backup and then turned off the backup features. If I turn off Background App Refresh, will it stop WhatsApp and Gmail from getting incoming notifications?

  7. Can't you just disable roaming on mobile networks altogether? I never even have roaming switched on to be honest.

  9. I want it on, but I don't want to run up extra data I don't need. I can do a iCloud backup after I get home. Not sure if there is 'best practices'. It's not the biggest deal... intl data is now $30 per GB. I used to pay $20 per MB only a few years ago.

  10. Traveling for work, pleasure, or military boot camp in the desert?

  11. Moving to Canada, of course. Gotta get in before they build a wall to keep all the Americans out.

  12. Their immigration website is already down. I don't think that's an accident.

  13. "iCloud automatically backs up the information on your devices—iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch—over Wi-Fi every day when they are turned on, locked, and connected to a power source."

WhatsApp and Gmail data usage is negligible

  14. @khaid

Turned iCloud back on.... in the Cellular screen I shut off Maps, Netflix, YouTube, etc... should be good to go. Danke!

  15. Apple has gone insane recently

Firstly the new Macbook Pro is underwhelmingly underpowered for the people it targets, dual core and limited to 16Gb Ram for $3000. if you are a pro and you want a laptop to render video this isn't enough. Then they make it completely disposable, soldered SSD, soldered RAM and a battery glued to case. underwhelming spec that they hope the crazed fanboys will want to replace in a year when the next one comes out. Not to mention the $80 adapter so you can use anything other than USB C, pockets full of adapters.

Now they release a $300 book of pictures... a new low for me.

Since Jobs died their attitude to consumers has gotten worse, overpriced products that are built to be thrown away. Not very ecologically friendly at all.

Still, I bet Alterego has both.

  17. Can't say I disagree about soldered HDD and memory. But the price hike is likely due to both sourcing and manufacturing the product line in the USA since 2013 #ThanksObama.

LOL...Apple specifically went with Skylake for the MBP because it finally offers quad-core versions now. Intel has a habit of having their new mobile chips roll out with only dual-core versions available initially. That's why Apple used Broadwell instead of Skylake in past MBPs. Also, Skylake does not allow more than 16GB of RAM for LPDDR3. Unless you want to use desktop RAM in a laptop (which Apple doesn't...and, by the way, neither does Microsoft), then 16GB is the limit. Laptops that use desktop RAM are usually gaming-specific laptops where the buyers could ultimately care less about portable battery life.

Besides, Apple makes an OS that is so good at memory handling that 16GB let's you do...ALOT.

  19. Doh! You're thinking of the Mac Pro, not the Macbook Pro.

  20. So if you buy the touchbar Macbook Pro with the soldered SSD that means you have to back up everything all the time. That thing dies straight after you typed something important and didnt back up you have no way to get it back without paying for board repair.

I hope Apple are the only people stupid enough to put this in a laptop and people reject it so that the idea of it dies a death.
