apple ∞ loop

  1. iPhones depreciate roughly $175/year. The cost of ownership will be better if you buy the iPhone8 and trade up each year.

Bust buy is offering iPhone 8 for ~$400 if you trade in an iPhone6 (18-mo lease credit + EOL buyback).

  2. Got a link to that? Is it only with a contract? I'm on TMobile and it doesn't look like Best Buy offers TMobile.

  3. Got one at Costco. $650 - $300 = $350. No hoops to go through and the $300 comes as a gift card.

  4. Did you have to trade in for the $300 and can you apply the GC immediately?

Lots of hoops in the deal I mentioned, It was trade in + lease + bill credit + EOL buyout deal, where so many things can go wrong. Think it was also limited to Verizon and Sprint, they carry the "world phone" variant of the iPhone which seem to net better deals.

Gonna wait for the X to come out and see if it causes more iPhone 8 deals.

  5. No. We still have to send the phone in and wait 8 weeks for the card. Tmobile had a similar deal but the $300 went towards the monthly payment spread over 24 months. Both have some risk.

  6. The iPhones we get at work are set to erase themselves after 5 failed attempts. It can't be turned off. How is that possible? On any other iPhone it allows 10 failed attempts and the ability to turn the wipe feature off.

    I'm overdue for an upgrade.

After owning a 6 Plus for 3 years, I've come to a few conclusions:

    1. I don't like the Plus phones. They are big and awkward and make texting or talking on the phone hard. It doesn't fit nicely in my pocket. I destroyed the case and nearly destroyed the phone getting into my car one time because the phone was so big it stuck out of my pocket and snagged on part of the car door. After you put a case on it, it's enormous and heavy. It feels like being back in the 1980s with one of those brick cell phones. Reading and web browsing are a little better. But actual phone use and portability suffer for it. You can put it on speakerphone to get around how awkward it is to hold up to your face, but I don't want people listening in on my conversations.

    2. I would never buy another first gen Apple product. My 6 Plus had touch disease and the camera failed. I had to have it replaced. Thankfully there was a recall program for the camera so it didn't cost anything. Still this phone was a mess of annoying issues.

    3. Buying the 128GB version was probably a waste of money. I hardly store anything on my phone.

    4. The higher resolution screen on the 6 Plus has been problematic. It runs like total shit on recent versions of iOS.

So I guess this leaves me buying a regular 7 or 8. The X looks like your typical first gen Apple product: ie cool tech demo that will probably have tons of issues in daily use. I'm sure the XS they release in a year or two will be good though.

  8. The Plus model from Apple is an afterthought and fucking terrible. Samsung make their larger models from the ground up to take advantage of size and minimize disadvantages. Apple literally ships a larger version of their 4.7" model. The iPhone X looks to be what the Plus model should've been all along.

  9. huh.. maybe i'm an apple noob, but my 6s plus and 7 plus have been fine.

  10. I agree with all that. My wife asked for my opinion on the 8 and 8 plus and I said I liked the screen size of the plus but hated the total size of the phone. I don't like holding her 6 plus and wouldn't buy one for myself. My 7 edge has a similar size screen but it isn't as bulky. In hind site the 128GB was kind of a waste. Her phone got the touch disease and the later updates seemed to cause issues.

What did your wife end up buying? I'm leaning heavily towards the standard iPhone 8. Haven't decided yet though. Don't want another plus, and the X is so different I worry it will have issues. I know that the X is probably the future of iPhones, but I would prefer a more refined successor to it a few years from now.

  12. I'm still on the 4.7" iPhone 6s, I had a brief upgrade to iPhone 7 but the fake home button made me puke. Also, even though I finally bought Bluetooth headphones I quickly found myself back to standard wired.

Frankly, I don't see much, if any, performance reason to upgrade just yet. The thought of paying $800 for the same 720p screen, fake home button and no headphone jack is tough to swallow. I'll dabble with the X when the price drops.

My 6 Plus runs like absolute garbage. Keyboard lags, everything opens slow, animations are slow. Not sure if it's a hardware failure, or it just can't handle the newer versions of iOS. My work phone is a standard/non-plus 6S and that still runs totally fine. The only big difference between these phones is the screen resolution. Maybe 720p is much easier on these older phones than 1080p.

The lag combined with it being too big and my work phone being so much better are all making me want to get a different phone.

  14. Get an S8+ you wont regret the switch. IPx is mostly samsung components anyway so..

  15. Not a fan of Android. My wife has an S6 Edge and I hate that turd with a passion.

  16. She got the 8. Time will tell if she regrets going with a smaller screen. The charging port in my 6 eventually wore out but it always ran like new. The 6 plus got lag over time. I have no idea why the two were different.

  17. Did she go with 64GB or 256GB? Not sure whether I want to shell out extra money for storage I will probably never use. Although the 256GB drive should be faster.

  18. Just a FYI, Samsung has come a long way since the S6. They've made significant improvements to software UI and stability. It's very close to iOS but I don't think it'll ever be as refined unless they control both the hardware and software. Might be worth demoing for a few days, If the extra feature overload isn't enough to dazzle you, iPhone is probably the better choice.

I'm at 32GB lol... it keeps filling up on me. I have to delete Yelp, FB, etc.. then reinstall to clear the cached storage. Pretty annoying you can't clear via software on iOS.

  19. I feel like people say that every few years, and then I try Android again only to discover that it's still a trashbag full of diarrhea.

  20. So part of it is consumer education. Samsung is by far the biggest Android OEM but Samsung TouchWiz != Android.

It's basically a custom OS based on Android with A LOT of features some of which are proof of concept. A lot of the stuff that makes it to stock Android (and iOS) Samsung did years earlier. The flip side is you have to deal with concept designs, UI, and bugs. They've made significant improvements to not release alpha-state features.

OnePlus or Pixel will give you more "out of beta" experience. But I never saw the point, as you can just get that with iOS. If you don't mind waiting 3 years for a edge to edge display and multi-screening it's a better user experience.

If your gonna carry one phone, I'd recommend the iPhone because it's clutch and the battery is super reliable. If you carry 2 it's probably it's worth mixing it up imo.
