  1. New CPU usually needs a new motherboard. New mother board usually means new memory. So CPU, memory, and motherboard will usually go together. You may be able to keep using the case, PSU and video card. But if you want a new video card you may need a new PSU.

  2. Actually, since you mentioned it, my primary drive is still the original WD 250GB. It's older than their color themed naming scheme.

Mine is also DDR2. When I upgraded the board and processor the last time, I could have gone AM2+ or AM3 with the processor, so I chose AM2+ because DDR3 was way too expensive at the time. It's funny now that DDR2 is as expensive as it is, it costs almost 3x as much as when I originally bought my sticks.

  3. Good deal? Just missed out on it being $10 cheaper on Newegg yesterday.

  4. As far as cordless kb/m combos go, is Bluetooth better than 'wireless'?

What should I be looking for?

  5. Bluetooth has better range and I found it generally more accurate when I have used it.

  6. Does anyone know if it's possible to stream music from my phone via bluetooth to a pc? All I can find is guides on how to do the opposite.

  7. This is a walkthrough for Windows 8 or 8.1 which I found via Google.

No idea if you are running 8?

  8. Need some recommendations. I have an old Dell that doesn't boot, turns on but has an amber light which indicates a component failure of MB/CPU/PSU. Replacing the PSU didn't fix it and I'm not paying for an old MB/CPU. The PSU I replaced had 20 + 4 pin power, my new PSU has just a 24 pin power block, the 4 pin is unplugged. Could that affect anything? The CPU fan turns on, but no output or sounds.

If it's shot, these should be usable:
PSU, Case, HDD, DVD, DDR2 Memory, Videocard.

Seems DD2 is not salvageable anymore. What is the cheapest config you'd recommend to get this running as a minimal browsing/youtube machine? Switching to AMD is almost a certainty.

  9. The 12v for the CPU will be on that 4 pin so it will likely be affecting it. Some PSUs let you split the 24 pin into a 20 pin and 4 pin but I assume the one you have doesnt? Over time they just changed it so that the extra 3.3v, 5v, 12v and grnd were just on the one 24 pin connector.

A lot of dells have 4 numbered lights on them, on boot they come on and then go off. If any remain on and it doesn't boot you can use them to see where it got during POST before failing.

  10. So a friend dumped coffee on their laptop. The computer still boots but some of the keys no longer work and they can't type their windows password. They already bought a new laptop and restored most everything from Carbonite. They'd still like to get back into it though. I don't know the brand but I assume they may be able to break into the bios setup or disk setup and re-install Windows without wiping the drive. Correct?

  11. USB keyboard not an option? If not don't you need a kb to get thru Windows install prompts?

  12. Yeah I was just going to say, why not just plug in a usb keyboard? Also, what kind of laptop? Most laptop keyboards can be replaced for ~$15. Or if you just need the data and don't care much about the laptop, pull the drive and put it in an external enclosure.

  13. She believes all the keys work except the number keys. She already tried a USB keyboard and said it didn't work. There is no way to know why without getting past the log in screen. I don't know what type of laptop it is. We only email every few days so it's pretty much impossible to provide direct support. I did mention the drive could be saved but she didn't seem interested in touching hardware. At this point she say that she's gotten everything she needs from back-up except her bookmarks.

  14. Lenovo have caused a stir for pre-loading spyware onto new systems.

    Chinese spies.

  15. That sounds similar to the recent issue with Samsung smart TVs.

  16. I bought my last laptop from the Microsoft Store. Their signature editions are 100% junkware and trialware free. It basically runs like I did a fresh install myself.

  17. It only affects consumer level Lenovo stuff. The Thinkpads are not affected. Still really scummy though.

  18. I might try to convince my Bro-in-Law to get a Mac mini. They any good?

  19. Define 'good'?

They can do basic computing and are fairly idiot proof. I would recommend the cheapest one, at the high-end you see diminished benefits because of the equivalent PC you can build (discounting form factor).

  20. Just need web browsing and maybe doing some spreadsheets. The cheapest one would be plenty. I think his current machine came with Vista. The crap he gets on his PC is crazy. Can a browser on a MAC be hijacked?
