It's only certain states that charge sales tax on online orders. I've never seen it in Florida. That's pretty lame as it defeats one of the main reasons to order things online.
If things carry on the way they are there won't be any shops left (other than supermarkets in the UK at least), the government needs the money it gets from sales tax and so it will have to come into force in the US at some point. Because we only have one tax point (VAT) that applies to the entire country online purchases have always included tax here. After 10-15 years of shopping online with no tax it is certainly going to come as a surprise to a few people in the US.
This tells you all about Amazon and sales tax. Supersonic is in PA, I believe. They charge tax in KS, KY, ND, NY, PA, TX and WA. http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_468512_determining?nodeId=468512#determining
Colorado was on the list but then there was a lawsuit to fight it so now taxes are on hold until the case is settled. I'm sure we'll be paying soon enough. I just hope they don't hit us with back taxes.
One of the nice things about living in Florida is no sales tax on online orders, and nothing pending as far as sales tax either.
Shit! I didn't realize there was not tax in NJ! I'm more in NJ nowadays, but I get all my shit shipped into PA because everybody but Amazon seems to have a warehouse in NJ.
How do you get rid of a TV then? My parents got my daughter a 22'' TV/DVD combi thing over a year ago for her 3rd birthday but because they wanted a pink one were limited for options and ended up with an e-motion thing from Sainsburys. Well 1 year and 2 months later the thing is fecked of course, keeps switching on its own between TV and DVD and will restart DVD's over and over again. Would have just connected a DVD player up but even when watching freeview it will switch itself to DVD. Yesterday the £75 worth of John Lewis vouchers arrived and they have a 22'' Toshiba for £155 (£80 after vouchers) so going to pick that up after work but now need to get rid of the old one. No idea what you are supposed to do with them. All TV's from John Lewis come with a 5 year guarantee so this one should last at least.
You can't just throw a TV away, get you in lots of trouble if you just put that out for the dustman to take. Having had a look at my local council website I think I need to take it to a local recycling centre to have it dealt with. It will be free as a resident of the area but a bit of a pain as it always has massive queues unless you go stupidly early. Or I can pay the council £20 and they will come and take it away apparently. Might just bring it to the office and get rid of it with something other computer stuff at a later date, we only get charged £10 per item.
1st, remember I live in South London, London being the city which I think has the most CCTV cameras in the world. 2nd, our supermarkets don't have big bins sitting outside. They have recycling bins but they are all built in a way to only accept certain sized/shaped items. Also they are probably covered by CCTV again to stop people stealing the donating clothing etc. Even parking the car some distance away wouldn't be an option as they would just follow me back to the car on the cameras.
It definitely will, but I agree with you that it ultimately has to happen. I'm a regular Amazon customer, and I've certainly enjoyed the low prices on certain items, but if Amazon's price advantage is mainly just a lack of sales tax (and it certainly appears that way)...that's ultimately anticompetitive, IMO.
this is the great part of living in a huge waste producing country like the US. i notice some small families in my neighborhood produce so much trash within a week that they use over 2 trash bins when it's trash day. i like your term for a garbage man over there.. dustman. sounds much more sophisticated.
As a household myself, my wife and my daughter now produce only 1 or 2 bags of actually rubbish per week that goes to landfill. We have 4 different bins outside our home. 1 for general waste - Collected every other week (week 1) 1 for paper/cardboard - Collected every other week (week 1) 1 for glass/plastic/metal - Collected every other week (week 2) 1 for waste food - Collected weekly Our council is talking about employing wardens to go around and check people are not throwing any food or recyclable items in their general waste and sending fines to anyone who does. They are also thinking about making all collections weekly to encourage higher usage. I have to admit I have a ton of jars and tins indoors as I have no room for them in the bin until it is emptied tomorrow morning. My parents called the council and got a second one for glass/plastic/metal but I feel we have enough outside.
I'm definitely not the biggest fan of the Democrat party, which has become almost as corporate-owned as the Republican party, but Bill Clinton's speech was pretty spectacular. I couldn't help but come away impressed.
Apartment complexes also tend to have poorly guarded dumpsters. I've gotten rid of a lot of old furniture that way. In some places the trash won't pick it up, and Goodwill is retarded about taking it. You try to give them free stuff and they don't want it. Craigslist is shady. Junk haulers charge money. The easiest thing is just to find a college apartment complex and throw your old furniture in their dumpster, preferably at night when no one is around. Or you can do the Walmart thing. Either way.
Im typing this on my ipad but using my laptop. ive got an app called splashtop 2 that lets me stream video and sound straight from my laptop, as long as i have wifi. i may never take my laptop out of the house again. now i can access the real youtube on my ipad instead of using the near useless youtube app.
I use splashtop on the pc's/laptops in my house. It sounds silly, but I use it to monitor the status of them when I'm running virus/malware scans so I don't have to keep running room to room to check on it. Once done, I just check the window and remote shut down.
