The general rule about military bases tends to be if it's an Air Force base it may be a place you might consider vacationing and if it's a Marine Corps base it's an ashtray devoid of organic life with the occasional exception of poisonous snakes or huge spiders or scorpions.
the whole panhandle area of florida is one big borefest. and if anything, it's closer related to the southern states (people-wise) than the rest of florida. also, you have a better chance of dying during a hurricane there. all in all though, it might be what you're looking for if you want out of the big-city life. florida benefits from not having to file state taxes each year and no vehicle inspections needed.
I don't care for borefest but I don't like the big city either. I'm also not a fan of the Southern states but I do like Florida.
The other downside to it is that florida is vertically long. So to get to somewhere like, Orlando, it's like driving to another state. It's like a 6 hour drive. If you want to visit miami, it's like another 6 hours. But if you don't care about those areas, it doesn't matter. Otherwise, you're good to drive around any other surrounding state since you're literally right next to the border.
Unless they're going to pay you double what you make now, don't even think about living in the panhandle of Florida.

It's basically just an extension of rural Alabama and Georgia. Panama City, which is near Elgin, is known as the "redneck Riviera". Like khaid said, there's not much there beyond the beach. I think what most people in the U.S. think of as Florida doesn't really start until you hit Orlando, which is halfway down the state.
Basically what alterego and khaid said, the panhandle is an extension of the deep south. I've been up there a few times, but it's not my cup of tea. It's not what people usually think of when they think of Florida. If you like Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, then by all means, move there, because that's pretty much what it's like. To me that just seems like redneck flyover country, and I would avoid it like the plague. I live in South Florida, which is nothing like the area you're looking at. The panhandle is really far away from here. It's like being in another state. I tell people from out of state I live in Miami, but I actually live in Lighthouse Point, which is a suburb of Ft Lauderdale. That's mostly because people from outside Florida have no idea where the fuck Fort Lauderdale is, and it's not far from Miami. I really like where I live, but I'm right on the intercoastal and only about two blocks from the ocean, which sucks when the weather gets bad.
Hey! I think I nearly wrecked my brother-in-laws' fathers' friends' uncles' boat out there! nice place -_-
Probably Palmdale, CA...not far from the coast and LA area, but also with a natural setting that is probably similar to Colorado in some ways (San Gabriel mountains etc.). San Diego isn't really that far either.
Rome, NY is OK if you like seclusion, cold, and lots of snow. I don't see how you can go wrong with Dayton, but it's just another big city and it's in Ohio. California might be more exciting.
Yeah Cali if it's not out of your preferance. Upper NY is terribly secluded or so I hear... Might be fun though but not if you like your 4g. I'd compare Cali to your current job and maybe family relations.
my creative gigaworks s750 speakers just died.. went out and grabbed some klipsch promedia 2.1's for $85 after coupon and gift cards. it seems like 5-7 years is the going rate for these "high-end" pc speakers. those gigaworks cost me about $350 back in 2006. i think i'm just just going to get sub $100 speakers from now on and just mainly stick with headphones mainly. edit: i just noticed that thing has no power button now. apparently it goes into low power mode after no activity. scary.
I'm having some issues with my PC speakers at the minute - I'll probably just bin them and stick with headphones. I'd rather save some space and there's no real need to project the sound.
Headphones are definitely the way to go. You can play late at night without bothering anyone, and in my experience they last longer than PC speakers.
they're pr0n safe too. that's most important.. unless you live by yourself and can blast that like no one's business.
