  1. I used to be on Sky and got 14.9Mbit when I was paying for 16 but it depends on the copper to your property and the distance from the exchange. The BT cabinet was outside my front garden wall so there wasn't much copper between it and myself which would have helped.

  2. We've had Sky internet here since we moved here last September and I had Sky in the place I shared with a friend a couple of years back and it was far from good, far from average even. When they installed it here they said the exchange was just at the end of our street so either he was lying or that has nothing to do with getting fast internet.

  3. With ADSL internet it is very important. The signal gets to your via lots and lots of copper cable from the exchange, the more of it between you and the exchange the more loss there will be and the slower the connection you will get. Also if the copper to your property is very old you will be affected and suffer from slower speeds.

New VDSL connections such as BT infinity get to your street using brand new fibre optic cable (still being installed in some areas) which can handle a lot more bandwidth then the old copper but from the cabinet to your house it is still copper so you will still get some loss. For example BT infinity is quoted as 40Mbit down, 10Mbit up but the predicted speeds my house will get is 29.9Mbit down and 7.2Mbit up because of the length of copper between me and the cabinet. At the moment this is a very new service so utilisation will be very low and you should see the top speed your copper can handle if you took the service.

VM also use fibre to your street but from there it gets to your house via underground coax cables, this cable also brings the cable TV signal into the house. Because of the fibre/coax combination this service is capable of much faster speeds (VM have been trialing 200Mbit connections I believe) but a lot of the infrastructure is old and as a result some areas are plagued with utilisation problems. UBR's are constantly having to be upgraded to resolve these issues and VM have backlogs of work in some areas. It took them 6 months to resolve an issue I had when my UBR became over subscribed and my interned upload speeds were reduced to a crawl. Some parts of the network are better than others, where I live Cable first was installed back in 1984 and although it will have gone through upgrades over the years a lot of it is today old stuff. This means that while maybe 75% of the country has now been upgraded to have a download/upload ratio of 10:1 I am still on the old system and even on 50Mbit would only get 1.5Mbit upload (instead of 5Mbit of upgraded areas). There is so much work that needs doing in my area that the status still says 'being planned' and no date has ever been mentioned whereas most other areas had a completion date confirmed when they first announced the upgrades last year.

EDIT: They uploaded a new works schedule it seems and now I would say 90% of the network has been upgraded but guess what, my area still says 'being planned'.... Croydon must be really fucked!

  4. A lot of people say stuff like this, but it all depends on the plan you're on. It's a very empty statement to say this but then it ends up that's actually the plan you chose in the first place.

  5. People are camping out for the opening of a local Ikea. The city is paying 11 officers to help manage the extra traffic and chaos.

  6. I have a hard time understanding why Swedish meatballs and cheap/decent-ish furniture are anything worth camping out for.

meh, I guess you can get free furniture for being at the front of the line.

  7. Internet here is shit. Proxy is slowing things down even further. Cuts out at random 5-15 minute intervals. I don't feel safe entering any sensitive information whilst I'm here either.

  8. They make small furniture which I guess is good for small places. I like the meatballs and the princess tart.

  10. Looks like a "walking stick" bug. I've seen those things before.

  11. It's a giant stick insect?

  12. I guess that’s what it is. It’s huge.

  13. It must be a different type of the same species. hence it's size. Glad we don't get big things over here. :D

  14. Now you can terrify children with your very own Casey Anthony Halloween mask.

  15. Did you turn to your boyfriend and say "hold me" during that scene?

  16. That's the point he knows to give him the "reacharound"...hold him in close

  17. Nah, he got a reacharound during High School Musical. During the Lion King it was just a tender embrace.
