  1. DIA is an open source Gnome project. Don’t know how good it is but it should always be free and it will run on Linux and Windows.

I’ve never seen network monitoring software that maps well by itself. I used to run HP Openview and it was a full time job. I’m just starting to use OPNET now and it’s pretty good stuff but it still takes some work to get organized.

  2. CHI!!!!!!

You seem to be a bit of a car enthusiast always going on about doing things to yours.

I am thinking of changing my car stereo to an aftermarket DAB one, any recommendations on a good make? Also if I were to go to Halfords and pick one up do you know if they do the mount to house the smaller ones? My car has a custom one as a lot of modern cars seem to now, I have found the mount online for £17.99 (with the converter leads) but if I can get it instore it will be easier.

Apparently I need to take half the centre console out to change the stereo in my car so heres hoping I don't break all the other controls! But at the same time the light needs changing behind the hot half of my heat controls so I could do that at the same time. At night I can only see the cold side.

I want to be able to listen to all of the absolute radio stations in my car as all the stuff on FM is pretty poor most of the time.

  3. Are you looking for one of the ones that mounts in your car and transmits to your existing stereo? The PURE highway has good reviews and you can get it in Halfords. They can fit it for you including the windscreen antenna.

I never listen to the radio in my car, I've just got a Brodie mount for my iPod and a griffin autopilot which plugs into the cigarette socket and into my stereo via aux. It's got play and FF/RW on it so I don't need to use the iPod controls. I've also downloaded cartunes which let's me just tap the screen to play/pause and swipe to switch tracks.

  4. You dirty stopout. Where were you eh? The bugs ate us alive.

  5. Haha sorry guys. Ended up staying out later than I thought. To be honest, if we hadnt spent about two hours umming and ahhing over where to go, I could have been back for some bug splatting.

I'm guessing my trooper is really underleveled now, might need to get him to level 5 or something.

  6. I am looking at a kenwood stereo which Halfords currently have on special offer at £160 (down from £230). It has a windscreen mounted aerial which means I don't have to have one of those stupid magnetic roof ones.

    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_818311_langId_-1_categoryId_243051

I called Halfords and they want £16 for the fascia, £15 for the ISO leads and £30 to fit it. I can get the fascia and leads for £17 online and fit it myself saving me £50 but it does mean ripping my centre console apart myself.

  7. Most fascias are pretty straightforward to remove if you have a guide. You may need to pop over to a car enthusiast's forum for that, try a Toyota owners club type thing.

It's usually a few screws and a lot of clips.

  8. I watched a youtube video for my car. I need to remove the plastic around the gear stick so that I can get to the clips for the centre console. Remove that and then behind it are 2 screws holding the fascia and 2 holding the stereo so its quite a pain all round as its the entire middle of my car that needs to come out to change it.

Just worried about damaging some of the cables that go to the console for things like heating etc.

Mine is a manual but other than that all the same.

This american one is a bit more indepth.

  9. Looks very easy, the hardest part would probably be connecting your new radio and fixing that in. You just need to make sure you don't yank the controls with cables attached. A butter knife wrapped in some thin cloth is very useful for prising clips out if you don't have that tool.

  10. I would rather do it myself for 2 reaons.

a: It saves paying over the odds to Halfords for the fascia + cables

b: It will give me a little project for an hour or so.

How will I get the aerial to the windscreen? Will I need to drill a hole in the dash? They said to mount the aerial above the tax disc.

  11. You may be able to feed the wire through the windscreen vents or in a seam between two pieces of the dash. You could probably pull it along where the existing antenna cable lives, and bring it out by the passenger side A pillar.

  12. I did wonder if that would be an option but I wasn't sure if they would be closed units.

  13. Your existing antenna has a cable that runs through your passenger side A pillar. You could feed the wire up to there.

Would the old antenna work for DAB?

  14. Ta muchly for your help, might go pick up the unit one evening this week and order the bits I need online. The cable that comes with this should do the job right?

(For some reason they have the fascia upside down in the picure but I assume it is to show the mounting brackets)

Speaking of existing aerial, had to have that replaced last week. Car was with Toyota for service + MOT. Got up Friday morning and the rubber sheath around the aerial had disintegrated. Went to Toyota to complain as they cleaned the inside and out of the car as part of the service and I assume they jet washed it as it was ripped to bits. They tried to tell me it had been burnt (considering it was in clumps on my roof and not melted blobs I argued it) and they gave me a £20 replacement for free. Wasn't happy that they tried to get around the blame as it wasn't like that before they had it and it looked like it had been blasted the way it was damaged.

When I got home I even 'tried' to set the old one on fire. It wouldn't catch fire and when it did start to melt it bubbled, went soft and bits dripped off and ended up as small puddles on my garden patio. Makes me not want to go to Toyota next year.

  15. It comes with cables to connect the stereo to your car so that should be fine, unless the kenwood has freaky odd connectors.

What's the rectangular slot at the top for?

You may need to get yourself a long thin bit of wire to help hook the antenna cable out of the dash.

Most car dealerships will try and worm out of anything, it's just how they roll.

  16. The Kenwood one says it comes with a Kenwood loom so I assume it probably changes from the standard to a Kenwood one, as long as I can cram it all in the space behind it should be OK.

I shall see if I can track down an old wire coat hanger for the job.

It comes with a generic fascia and cage but I assume it won't fit as all cars are different.

  17. I have discovered I do not own a single wire coathanger, I was shocked and appalled.

  18. CHI..

Sorry I have another car question for you.

Over the past couple of weeks if I haven't used my car for a few days when I first get in the front windscreen washers will not work. After driving for 1 minute it all comes back to life.

When not working the rear one works fine and when I pull the lever for the front one the wipers move but I get no water. Do you think its likely just something blocking the pipes that gets moved when I start to drive and then settles again when the car isn't used for a while? When I used the car everyday last week they were fine each time, it is only when it isn't used for a while. I have read that they use the same pump it just goes forward to do the front windscreen and in reverse to clean the back so the pump should be OK right?

I really don't want to have to replace the pump as its a £70 part and to get to it I have to jack the car up and remove the front right tyre so I may have to take it to Toyota which will also cost me £63 in labour. I had a quick look this morning and even getting to the hose might be difficult without doing the above but is it worth taking the hoses off at the bonnet end first and seeing if they are or any junctions might be blocked?

  19. If you can still hear the pump when it's not working on the fronts, then it probably isn't the pump's fault. Have you tried opening the bonnet and checking the tubing that leads to the washer jets? These usually just pull off the jets and you can check if anything is coming out.

Its probably a build up of gunk or something that dissolve or shifts when the engine is warm? Might be worth pouring in some hot water into the reservoir and siphoning it out. Clean your jets with a needle as well.

Other than that, I can't be of any more help, I'm afraid.

  20. Whats the deal with those riding coolers?
