Do you HAVE to be connected to the internet to play a game downloaded from steam? I just tried to load up Sandreas but it just stayed on the screen that says "preparing to launch San Andreas". If it's true then that's terrible.
I think you do yes. In the day and age when everyone has 24/7 internet connections I don't see this as a problem really.
Yes and no. Some games are required for you to be online due to copy protection. This is even true for non-steam games. Steam has a setting to go offline if you want to play offline. The thing is, if you're using steam to get games, you obviously already have a broadband connection which means you're always online anyways.
The internet at work's been playing up today and it was pissing me off so I turned it off, then tried to play GTA and I got stuck with a message, it just said it was preparing to launch GTA San Andreas, it didn't even mention the fact that it would do nothing until I'd re-established the net connection. And what about when I'm round my brother's place? He has no internet, so I won't be able to play the game I bought specifically for the times when I'm not near my PS3 (i.e. out of the house). PC gaming fail if you ask me.
I dunno, more like getting connected fail? You seem to be the only one with internet issues who lives in the UK on this forum, and you even leave your fellow countrymen in a daze with your issues. The only other guy in the forum who is on and off the internet all the time and is in the UK is phisix and that's because his income isn't stable yet. If internet at your house is an issue, call up customer support or get different provider? Why pay full price for your internet to have it working only half the time? If internet at your work is an issue, boy oh boy, your workplace better not rely on internet for operating hours. You'll be looking at unemployment in no time. Your brother has no internet? Sounds like a personal issue. It's almost 2012. People get a hard time for not having internet on their mobile phone nowadays. Even pdraggy has internet and he lives out in the boonies in the US.
I believe he is on Sky which is ADSL (LLU) so it is likely his exchange or copper is poor. His only options are to go VDSL (At the moment BT are the only provider) which will still rely on the copper between his home and the cabinet (fibre from here) or go for cable fibre (fibre to cab, coax to home) with Virgin Media if he is in an area that has cable. With BT VDSL he can get 40down/10up or with Virgin 30/3, 50/5 or 100/10 (DOCSIS 3) so as long as he isn't in an area with an oversubscribed UBR he will really notice the difference. VM also do an old 10/1 service which is what I use at home as my area is one of the last in the country to be upgraded to 10:1 download/upload ratios and I refuse to pay for 50 down to get 1.5 up. Saying that I was playing online with Monsly last night, while my wife was online with the laptop and a film was downloading and we had no lag so it works well enough.
Sounds like you probably have a malware or driver issue with your laptop to be honest. The laptop is the common thing in all of these scenarios you've mentioned.
Oh how I hate PC gaming! I was playing GTA the other day and I did a few missions then had the game just quit on me with a window popping up saying "gta-san andreas.exe had stopped working". Fuck, so I did those missions again. Now I'm playing in constant fear that the game might simply stop working again. I just finished playing the game again, I did 3 missions, the gun challenge in ammu-nation, took over some territory and completed the pimping side mission, I was literally on my way to save the game fro fear of it fucking up on me and guess what? It fucked up on me. Bullshit PC gaming with it's over complicated crap and failing bullshit. Where's my PS3?
San Andreas is a horribly shitty port I hope you realize. Don't judge PC gaming on the basis of a crappy console port.
Are you still playing on the same laptop the first time you made a post complaining about PC gaming on the original forum?
Couldn't you end up in trouble for playing games at work? Surely if their network detects that activity you could get in the shit?
No I finish at 12 outside of term time but my ride home is at 4 so I have a few hours to basically piss about, that's the only reason I bothered to download a game to play on my laptop.
ubisoft games, yes you have to be connected for a lot of them to work thanks to drm. but many if not all of the others are good when your in offline mode. I've no experience in it but you can find it in the file menu i think... i found it once, but there's hardly a moment when i'm NOT connected to the internet (I'd get hives if I was for too long o.0) so I paid it no mind.
lol you ppl are brutal ^^ but yeah, it's a port. plus you have issues. nobody's bad but your own, quit blaming everyone else
