Crysis 2 Sucks Balls

  1. It actually does do some impressive stuff with lighting, motion blur, and smoke, but I think it's mostly to hide the cruddy textures.

  2. You played on Hardcore, isnt that medium? Thought advanced was highest settings, and Gamer somewhat above console level.

  3. Gamer - low
    Advanced - medium
    Hardcore - high

I don't know why they didn't just call it low, medium, and high.

  4. I reinstalled it just to make sure I wasn't misjudging it. The first two to three hours are painfully mediocre, and I wouldn't blame anyone for not wanting to play beyond that. But the game does get better. The city opens up quite a bit, and there are some large outdoor environments in the wrecked city. Nothing close to what was in the first game, but not bad. The nanosuit also has an upgrade system with additional powers that weren't in the first game. Don't get me wrong. I still think this is a horrible PC port, and I still think the graphics are disappointing when compared to the first game, but the gameplay itself is still fairly good. If I hadn't played the first game, I'd probably think more highly of it. I think what bothers me the most is that we went from one of the greatest shooters of all time to something that's pretty average in most ways. I'd say it's probably a 7/10 from what I've played. I'll buy it later when it's under $10. Console people will probably just want to rent this.

  5. Okej, i tried on Hardcore, still the area in the distance is blurry for me.
See below screenshot, could be my hardware or settings, but this is really not toleratable for a game anno 2005.

  6. Seems what I heard was right then. I think I'll wait for the sales before getting this. I'm not a massive FPS so, unless it's amazing, I'm happy to hold out for the <£25 price point.

  7. Yeah, this game sucked. I think I have to knock it down to a 4/10 for a dumb ending and for how badly it handled the nano suit upgrades. At several points the game glitched and lost all of the points I had acquired to upgrade the nanosuit. You also don't get enough points to get any of the cool upgrades until literally five seconds before the game ends. You read that right. The final boss battle gives you a ton of upgrade points that you can't actually use because the game is over. The AI is outright broken. I can't count the number of times enemies would just stand around waiting to get shot. All you really have to do is turn on maximum armor and run around spraying and you can breeze through this game in about 10-12 hours. There's no challenge at all and the game is on rails.

The game also felt very generic. It was part Halo and part Call of Duty, but it never felt like I was playing a sequel to Crysis. Actually it ripped off Halo so hard it hurt. You're basically master chief, and they turned the black dude from the first game into Cortana. He's dead but he talks to you through the suit. Really stupid stuff. Crytek succeeded in making the most bland, generic FPS of all time.

  8. Wow, I thought it was pretty decent from what I've played of it. I've been in Florida for the past few days for my brother's wedding and haven't had a chance to play too deep into it. Maybe I'm a quarter into it I'd guess, perhaps a bit more. I've enjoyed most of it so far.

  9. I'm kinda enjoying it myself. I'm at a bit where I'm fighting my way along the freeway. Playing on the PC too and the graphics seem pretty tasty to me aswell.

  10. Human digression. We all love or hate what others are the opposite to. That said, I will have to try Crysis 1 sometime. I am intrigued.

  11. Yeah, my impressions are still that Crysis 2 is different compared to Crysis 1, but different is not necessarily bad. It runs quite well for me in Very High. It's almost eerie to get around 60 fps in a Crysis game. It requires a monster PC with multiple high end video cards to get that in Crysis 1 if you're approaching max. I can get around 60 fps at Very High with a single GTX 460 and could max it with a high end card without a problem. Also, I'm witholding final judgment about the visuals somewhat considering DX11 and possibly other updates are still on the way. The game itself seems fine so far to me.

I'm at a part that would probably be too much of a spoiler; something important just happened. The direction of the story changed just now.

  12. I've made it back to Crysis 2. I must be getting closer to the end. There was a big twist in the story, and lots of Ceph are attacking me. Those mounted machine guns you can rip off are badass. I'm somewhat irritated that they haven't released the DX11 patch yet, although I don't know if my setup will be powerful enough to run it that way. I'm at 1080p; maybe 50-60 fps in Very High and around mid 30s to 40s in Extreme, although drops can happen if the screen is flooded with stuff or the environment is a big, open area.

I'm really thinking about getting a 6990 eventually. That would last for quite some time. I need to see what happens with the CPUs this year before I can upgrade.

  13. Hey AKS, would you say that the retail version of Crysis 2 runs even more smoothly than the demo code did?

  14. The demo was multiplayer only. I really haven't messed with multiplayer in the final copy. I wish they had released single player demos, especially for PS3 and 360.

  15. Well still, do you find the average frame rate and minium framerates to be higher in the final version, regardless of the game mode?

  16. The PC version runs really smoothly for me. It runs at at a playable frame even at 1080p and Extreme, the highest setting. If I want around 60 (maybe just under that), I can play it at Very High.

A DX11 patch has been officially annouced as well. I'm interested to see how that runs, although I may struggle to get much benefit out of it until I upgrade if it's really demanding.

  17. Hopefully they have been delaying it for so long so that they can make ample optimisations to the DX11 engine code.
