David Mitchell\'s Soapbox

  1. British Comedian David Mitchell has a youtube channel featuring short videos wherein he just goes on a rant about things, grumpy old man style. The things that annoy him tend to be rather small things that most people seem fine to ignore but nevertheless need addressing. I find myself agreeing with him most of the time and in one episode he actually declared his approval of the word LOL, which would come as a surprise to anyone who's ever seen David Mitchell.

Anyway, I spotted this video earlier regarding a particular phrase the Americans get wrong. It's funny because he's right! Lol.

  2. I quite like David Mitchell, his rants are about the only funny thing on 10 o'clock live (sometimes Charlie Brooker is funny but not always). He is also fantastic on QI.

I am still convinced he is Monsly seeing as they sound exactly the same!

  3. :D

  4. who the hell says these things any way?? must be an east coast thing.

on the hold 'down' thing I believe it's to do with hurricanes, having to nail 'down' everything and such. I don't believe you all get many hurricanes and earthquakes and things where stuff ends up being up-side-down if not nailed down where you are so I'm not surprised.

I'd actually rather hear 'I couldn't care less' rather than 'I could care less', it's more polite anyway :D. But than again who the hell does that?? I don't know.

  5. But the expression is "Hold the fort" I the ratio of hurricanes to invading armies is rather one sided in this respect.

You've probably got more negative associations with "I could care less" rather than "I couldn't care less" due to the usage over there.
