Elder Scrolls V Skyrim

  1. Do you have any interest in upgrading to a newer video card or an SLI setup? It seems like this might be a good time, especially with lots of sales coming up soon.

  2. I'm currently using a level 9 glass cannon mage. I'm dual casting flame spells most of the time. I can mow down most enemies before they can do much damage to me, but what concerns me is situations sure to come in which I'm trapped in a small space with a boss-type encounter. That could cause major problems because I can't take very many hits. Melee heavy enemies with strong defense and high speed tend to give me some problems.

  3. How do you get a title like glass canon mage?

  4. A cannon as in dangerous attack power but glass as in I get destroyed in a few hits. All attack, no defense pretty much. It's kind of exciting to play with this type of character.

  5. Not really. At 1680x1050, a GTX 460 will max most any game, including Skyrim. I'd need a new monitor to really get anything out of a video card upgrade. I also don't consider any of the cards out there now to be a worthwhile upgrade over a GTX 460. The Geforce 500 series is just a refresh of the 400 series.

If I upgrade anything, it's going to be my cpu, mobo, and ram. I'm still on a Core 2 Duo and a 975X board, which are archaic at this point. The 975X is basically an old Pentium 4/D chipset that intel hastily adapted to accept Core 2 Duos when they first came out. It's ancient stuff from like 2005.

Ivy Bridge is supposed to be launching soon, and I'll probably go with that. Some of the X79 boards look really impressive.

  6. AKS, I really think you should take to conjuration somewhat, get to apprentice level and summon yourself some Frost Atronachs, they are the definition of tank and should be able to easily occupy melee enemies so that you can focus on using your ranged spells. Also, the conjuration tree has some very nice perks, especially at later levels.

  7. Anyone else got the quick reflexes perk in the block perk tree? It's awesome. If you block as an enemy does a power attack (turns out they do a lot) time slows down and you can simply sidestep the attack and counter with a side power attack. Very handy.

  8. I don't quite get this perk system.

First of all, it's obvious that when I see something like "Something 0/5", I can upgrade it, 5 times. Fine.
But then, there are abilities and how do I recognize which one I already have, which one is available and which one isn't? Dumb me, but I have no idea.

At first I thought that a white star means "you have it" and a purple one means "you don't have it". Most of purple stars have too high required stats (like "destruction 30" while I am at 21).
But take the "dual destruction" for example. 20 is required, I am at 22, the star is purple but I still cannot pick it. Does it mean that I already have it?

  9. If its purple you can't select it. If its blue you can select it and if it's lit up yellow/white you already have it. Maybe you can't select the dual cast because you haven't chosen the destruction half magicka perk. In order for a perk to become available you must have the perk that comes before it.

  10. I knew I had to be overlooking something completely basic. Thanks for the wake up call! The perks menu makes it seem like everything is just granted to you once you select it.

  11. The more I play this game the more I love it. The combat has been completely overhauled and now I know how to block properly each fight has become extremely satisfying. I'm level 15 now and once I hit level 30 I'll deliver my verdict on how I rate this game.

There is one annoying bug I found that many people have also encountered and that is having an arrow permently lodged in your body, in my case in my face. The solution I found was to get shot by an archer and the offending arrow would disappear. Bear this in mind if you encounter this bug.

  12. what are you talking about? that sounds like an awesome bug. that could probably make one awesome screenshot.

mammoths on trees, vertical horses, horses owning dragons.. gonna need a lil patch love.

  13. I skipped over the fire Atronachs for the frost one. The spell cost 4 times as much so I figured it must be a lot better.

Has anyone been using signs? They seem like a good idea in theory but in practice I'm not sure. It seems friendly companions can set them off which in turn pisses them off and they attack.

And where do you see your title at?

  14. Trust me it was annoying. So much so that I completely stopped using the 3rd person view because when I did it looked stupid and sucked me right out of the experience. I'm so glad it's been sorted out.

  15. One thing that stands out for me with this game vs. Oblivion (aside from the technical aspects) is how much more interest and motivation I have to follow the main quest and complete the various tasks involved. My ratio between following the main quest vs. randomly wandering around is probably the exact opposite of what I did when playing Oblivion.

  16. I intended on wandering a while and exploring random dungeons a lot but there's so many quests to do I'm do ding myself drawn to those instead. Even dungeons I enter on my way to complete quests contain quests! There's so much to do, it's awesome. Im definitely noticing my character getting stronger, soon I'll work up the courage to try taking on the giants again.

  17. @alterego

Oblivion had an awful main quest that was also quite short. That game was really all about side quests.

  18. Some of the side quest are kind of funny. I went on one to find a book. The entrance to the vault where the book was located took me almost an hour to find. It was so hard to get to that the map hardly helped. Then I died like 10 times trying to get the book. When it was all done I had leveled once and gotten almost 2000 gold in loot. My reward for the book? 24 gold pieces.

  19. That didn't happen to be for a particular Orc now did it?

  20. Did you use 16-bit or 24-bit?
