I've left the dragon and went back to Whiterun and then took a carriage to Winterhold. Beautiful. I lost an hour just running through the city and the college, night, day, the snow falls and then stops falling and you can see the sea and surrounding mountains. I've joined the college and did a first quest for them, the one in the training dungeon. I am impressed how fine the story reveals itself with small and simple tasks you have to follow. I wonder if you write about the same book quest I got now.
Perhaps... perhaps. I also suggest everyone to who's considering following a more magic oriented path to go to the Winterhold college of magic and complete the quest line there. Lots of fantastic gear and spells avaliable there.
Ran across a rather interesting looking ruin/dungeon by accident yesterday called Labyrinthian. Looked absolutely huge, but appeared to be populated (at least on the outside) by frost trolls. Left that one for a later date when I have higher health and better armor...
Same. Those frost trolls were what finally managed to get Lydia killed off. I went into the place right next to it called Lost Valkygg and got completely owned by a Draugr Deathlord. He disarmed me by shouting at me, I'll totally be coming back when I'm tougher to finish the job.
I made several attempts at killing a frost troll on the way up the mountain to meet the Greybeards the first time and my usual strategies (sneak attack arrow + flame roasting + two-handed magic axe) proved useless.
I came so close to killing my second dragon last night. It took about 15 minutes to get his health down and then the game crashed.
I've seen 6 so far. The first one you can't miss, I obviously didn't kill that one. The second one was quest related and there were about 5 of us to take it down. The third and fourth dragons were random encounters, Lydia and I killed them. I killed the fifth all on my own (after a couple of deaths) and the sixth wasn't looking for a fight, it just circled above me and when I tried to get to higher ground to battle it the beast just flew away. Pussy.
You'll probably find yourselves at Labyrinthian later in the game. Be warned however even if you're fine for the trolls on the outside, what lies deep inside will whoop your arse regardless. Also Dragons are best tackled in melee combat I've found; I conjure up a couple of swords and cut them to bits. I think I've killed 12 or so thus far and that has proved the best method... just watch out for Blood Dragons, nasty melee and fire damage they have.
I also just started finding Ebony weapons and armour; in fact all but 2 of the ebony items I've found were on Draugr Deathlords. I also can’t wait till I get 100 in conjuration; having 2 permanently summoned Storm Atronachs is going to be beast.
You must be much further along than I am. I've just started finding Dwarven and Elven gear. I've mostly been exploring and progressing through the college quests. I just repossessed some books for the college. My conjuration is around 30 and destruction is approaching 50 I think. I'm going to use a trainer to boost up conjuration when I get back to the college.
Yeah, that's the impression that I got from that place. Vast and very dangerous...I love to get that feeling though. Bethesda does a great job with the creepy atmosphere in these games.
What classes are you guys playing? I'm probably going to start playing this tonight and I'm not sure whether to go with a melee or magic class.
I've gone for a melee character. Not sure how well it'll work tho, 1st dragon fight was a pain in the ass since they tend to fly around a lot.
I’m playing pure mage. I’d usually play with a sword as well but now I think dual casting is a better solution. Basically if you get the perk you can cast the same spell in both hands for a combined effect. Anyone come across 2 dragons at the same time? I always see two regulars over by the area with the steam pits.
My character is an Altmer/ High Elf mage. For the most part my character is a pure mage, although I am a sneaky sort of mage who picks locks and steals frequently. I find myself doing most of my damage with fire and ice spells, although I'm now working on building up conjuration. I had never really picked a pure mage type of character in an RPG until Demon's Souls; I eventually made a pure mage build that was frail defensively but could destroy a boss in one or two attacks. I found mages to be tougher to use but also more interesting and exciting.
This is how I do it. Ice against fighter/warrior types. Electricity against mages. Fire for everything else unless it’s immune to fire. If I specialize with an element I’ll probably start with fire. Conjuration works well with destruction as long as the conjured beings fight correctly. Sometimes I’ll raise a zombie and they’ll run the wrong direction while I’m getting hammered. Zombies are a mixed bag. Often I’ll see a mage Zombie fight with their fist which is really stupid. Conjuration also provides easy targets for destruction spells. Conjure – destroy, conjure – destroy, Level Up.
