Fallout 4

  1. How did you change the FOV? The default makes first person mode almost unusable. I can't believe that in 2015 game developers are still releasing games without a field of view slider in the settings. That zoomed in fish eye look of a low field of view is terrible. Who can even play that way?

They've done some bizarre things to the interface that I'm not sure I like. Like arrow keys for dialogue. I think the UI is actually a step down from Skyrim.

On the plus side, the intro with the nukes dropping and everyone rushing to the vault was pretty awesome. Probably the best opening to a Bethesda game yet.

  2. Yup. Nothing like fighting a pack of radroaches with a FOV equivalent to looking through a toilet paper tube. I'm betting a slider will come in a later patch.

Found this link on the Steam FO4 home page.

  3. Thanks. The mouse acceleration is also horrible. I have no idea why that's ever on by default in a PC game.

Something weird actually happened with my CSGO settings where it had been off and somehow got turned on. Took me awhile to figure out why I couldn't aim for shit. Turned it off and suddenly I could aim again. Why anyone would want the mouse to keep moving a little bit after they've moved it is a mystery to me. It makes it so the mouse doesn't go where you point it.

  4. Find anything of value in those houses?

  5. Junk. Lots of junk.

  6. I've read some reviews claiming that there's more items of value now for either crafting or settlement building etc. They make it sound like you can pick up almost anything, throw it into a junk pile at a base, and have it become useful later.

  7. Ah. I think so. Junk is probably raw materials. I don't have a base yet or any skills to build stuff. Not including the intro I'm probably only an hour in.

  8. Same. I'm about an hour in. I just got power armor and a mini gun to protect a group of civilians from raiders. Haven't done anything with the crafting or town/base building stuff yet. There's junk everywhere, but I have no idea yet which junk is useful for crafting.

  9. This game sure is popular.

  10. I think I am the only one not playing. Not bothered at the moment as I have tons to play and catch up on.

  11. It's popular on PC, but Bethesda games always are. The consoles have had some other big releases so I don't know how popular it is on PS4 or XB1.

  12. I thought there were 125M gamers on PC? That's not even one percent for any of those games.

  13. So far this basically seems like Fallout 3 crossed with minecraft, with the weapon crafting of Skyrim.

  14. You can get the cryolator gun that's locked up in vault 111 almost immediately. Once you find dog meat, go back to the vault and order dog meat to break the case. That gives you one of the best guns in the game right away.

  15. Seems like they make all the high-end guns available early but they limit the usage by not making the ammo available. I got the fat boy, mini, and rocket launcher. I do have 5 rockets and I'm going to feed them to a super mutant I found that seems impossible to kill.

  16. I didn't realize the companions can be so temperamental. I had one shoot me and run away after I picked a lock. I'm really struggling on where to put my skill points cause it seems like I really need them everywhere. I've put two in scavenger and I'm probably going to max that out. Maxing out the stim-packs also seems like a good idea. I'd like to get to the armor mod perk but it's a long path there and I hate to waste a point on fist fighting. I'm also struggling with the max carry limit. Every strength point only increases it 10 pounds so that's not really worth it. I probably just need to fast travel and dump my junk more.

  17. What do you guys think of the difficulty level so far? About the same as Fallout 3 or higher?

  18. @bfun

Keep in mind that you can have your companion carry stuff. Anything heavy I'm not using but may need at some point (like a minigun or rocket launcher) I just give to dog meat to carry. I don't actually find strength that useful unless you're going to focus on melee.

I've put absolutely nothing into charisma. I know it unlocks a few dialogue options and some perks for base/settlement buidling, but that seems much less useful than some of the other SPECIAL attributes.

    @alterego

Combat seems harder than Fallout 3. It's getting a little easier as I level up and get better weapons though.

  19. I'm playing on Normal and it seems a bit harder than FO3 but that may be because it's still early in the game and I don't have the best gear yet. I like where it's at though. I die a lot but not too much. My only complaint is the AI seems to have great aiming through obstacles. For instance I'll get shot up through a steal grid catwalk but when I return fire every bullet gets blocked by the catwalk.

There are also plenty of bugs but very minor ones. Sometimes my PipBoy wont open until I open another menu. Likewise my weapon will disappear until I go to the exit menu. Companions don't attack and will stand around taking damage.

  20. Power armor is now a finite resource too, which makes things harder. With the DLC in FO3, you could get power armor almost immediately if you did Operation Anchorage. In FO4 you also get it right away, but it relies on power cores which are hard to come by. They also gave it a heavy/clunky and slow feel. It now seems like something you bring into special tough combat situations where you're fighting deathclaws and/or super mutants rather than something you wear all the time.

There seems to be a lot of bitching in user reviews about the game being buggy. It's actually the least buggy Bethesda game I've encountered yet at launch. Nothing like the crashing or freezing in FO3 when that came out, or Skyrim having a bug that could break the main quest. It hasn't crashed on me and I haven't encountered anything like that. Mostly just minor glitches with some of the animations. Nothing major.
