The winter deep freeze is starting to take hold in New England. Probably time for me to buy a copy of this game and start playing.
--spoilers-- Finished the game as the Institute, then watched the other endings on Youtube. The Brotherhood, Railroad, and Minutemen all have basically the same ending that involves nuking The Institute, just with different characters. That seems pretty lazy on Bethesda's part. I was hoping for more unique endings. The Brotherhood has the worst ending. Their leader is a total asshole. You get a meaningless rank and a jetpack that you can build anyway. Actually the Railroad might be even worse. I don't think they even give you anything, just a talking to about how they need to go save some more synths and how the Commonwealth is full of synth hating bigots. I thought the Institute had the best ending. You become the new faction leader and stay on good terms with your son. The Brotherhood was so unlikeable in this game that I enjoyed killing them and blowing up their airship. I get the impression the Institute ending is supposed to be the canonical one. I would think with their energy problems solved and you as faction leader, the Institute would become more benevolent and more likely to help people instead of isolating themselves.
***Spoilers*** Yeah none of the Fallouts had a very good ending but the Institute made the most sense. I did however feel very conflicted about slaughtering the railroad after earning their trust.
I am far away from finishing though I play only this one lately. Instead of progressing, I build fences around my settlements and waste caps for shops. Call me a Bethesda freak but despite slow beginning, F4 got me as each one of their previous sandboxes. (The one I put most time into was Daggerfall, almost 20 years ago)
This game is evil. I expected to be running for my life from deadly mutants, and instead have found myself obsessed with collecting scrap and building post-apocalyptic McMansions.
I couldn't care less about the base building, it's slow and boring, slows the game down. The game doesn't wow me, it's good but it's not fantastic. Still it is keeping me busy which is what matters for now.
I was lukewarm on the game at first and then it sucked me in like a high priced hooker. As flawed as it was, I still had a blast playing it. I guess I could say that about most Bethesda games. They have their flaws, but Bethesda seems to know how to make fun games.
Keep in mind there is a build limit to each site. 3 stories is about the best you can do without mods. Defense isn't that important ether as the settlements still need help when attacked. I did take advantage of the defenses once by leading a high level killer robot into a wall of turrets. That was fun.
I turned Sanctuary into a giant fortified megastructure with a huge adhesive farm. That seemed to work well for me. I never ran out of adhesive again, and it was pretty impervious to attacks.
3 stories? The first time I died in the game was falling off the 4th or 5th story of my McMansion during construction.
Then you built a McTower. I hit my limit when trying to add my final magazine rack. I had to go tear up some fences outside to make it happen. This wasn't my final product but it was close. I have shotgun turrets over the stairs and laser turrets at the gate. Inside has a lot of paintings. I also left a lot of the old trees and homes in place and I guess that counts against the total.
Isn't there an exploit where you can reduce the settlement size bar by dropping and picking up weapons? And why are your buildings associated with McDonald's?
Of all the positive feedback this game gets.... somehow building your own trash skyscraper and plunging to your death from it, was the most enticing of all.
Well you guys made me log back in to get some more shots. Here you can see how I tried to make a nice protected market place like Goodfellow. Here is my crib behind the market place. There are disco lights but you can't tell from the picture. Here I'm watching my favorite TV show.
That's just my charisma outfit I wear. I could pretty much go naked at this point because of the luck perks. I use the lucky plasma pistol which has a base of 150 and critical of 300. Then I have a luck critical bonus of 2.5x on top of that. So I think I'm doing about 750 per shot as almost every shot is a critical with critical banker perk. Then I can get about 4 shots off in VATS so that's like 3000 damage before I'm helpless. A pack of Feral Ghouls are about the only thing that can get me because they move so fast.
I already had to scuttle the panels on the lower level in order to get some extra metal for a water purifier, and I'm probably going to lop off the fifth level and just go for a roof deck and a cabana or two. I'm also realizing that doors are kind of useless since the dog and NPCs are constantly leaving them open.
