Science is really a branch of religion at the end of the day; if you don't believe in God - whatever his form - then you don't believe in electricity, TV or even tins of vegetables. I'm pretty sure they exist even if your 'faith' in science says they don't.
It's not that faith is not provable. It's that believing large life affecting claims as true for no good reason is an idiotic way to think. On a totaly unrelated note, this is pretty much what I and most people I know think of when Americans defend their right to own mass murder machines. This and multiple mass shootings a year.

The chatter about the gun control debate that gets airtime tends to be the extremists at opposite ends of the spectrum, most of which tends to be useless. There is plenty of room for a more common sense approach. Most members of the NRA support stricter rules regarding background checks. The problem is the NRA leadership doesn't give a damn what 85% or more of what its members want. Here are my own ideas: Personally, I'd say shotguns and hunting rifles cover most protection and sporting needs. Close the loopholes in background checks and otherwise leave these alone, especially in rural areas. I'd of course agree that insane things like rocket launchers and the like should be (and are currently) banned from the general population. I also see no legitimate civilian purpose for gigantic drum magazines and the like. I would probably not outright ban all assault weapons, but I'd probably also make it a pain in the ass to get in terms of licensing and background checks. You better really want one, as I'd make it expensive, difficult, and inconvenient to get the most dangerous firearms. But still possible. I personally HATE handguns. They are behind the overwhelming majority of gun murders (~75%) in the US. I wouldn't mind seeing those things banned. They are easy to hide and are the weapon of choice for gangster thugs. There are nearly as many rifles as handguns in the US, yet handguns account for ~75% of homicides and rifles account for only 4%. Shotguns account for about 5%.
I agree with everything you have to say except the part about handguns. Handguns are really the only good option for protection in urban areas. I would like to see the legal magazine capacities cut down, but I don't want to see them banned entirely. I don't see any reason why someone shouldn't be able to own a revolver or an M1911 where the magazine sizes are small. Revolvers have long reload times. They aren't what someone would use in a massacre. It's the Glocks and other modern military style handguns that have ~20 round magazines that probably need to go. I'd put those in the same category as assault rifles with drum magazines. They're meant for the battlefield, not for civilians. But yeah in general I agree with you. I think people want common sense gun control laws. They don't want people walking around with rocket launchers and M249 SAWs, but they also don't want guns banned completely.
I'd be willing to bend somewhat regarding handguns, particularly in urban areas. Shotguns and rifles are far less practical in densely populated areas, especially in living areas in which you are sharing walls and ceilings/floors with neighbors in every direction that a rifle or shotgun would easily punch through. Perhaps we could substantially beef up the background check aspect or other forms of restrictions for urban areas, but I do think handguns are a terrible problem considering they are the tool used for such a huge proportion of firearm homicides. The fact that they are so easy to conceal makes them extremely dangerous.
