iOS Gaming

  1. Interesting quasi-article that's cribbing from a Gizmodo interview with Epic's Tim Sweeney.

A4 core is the equivalent of a single Xbox 360 core? Not bad, considering that the iPad 2 has double that. It will be very interesting to see what starts popping up the rest of this year on the gaming front.

  2. Thats pretty fast for a smartphone lol. Hopefully this wont be a danger to console gaming. Imagine everyone playing their games on a damn phone...

  3. It's not even a smart phone, it's a tablet PC.

  4. I was reffering to the Iphone's A4 CPU being as powerfull as one 360 core.

  5. Just picked up Great Little Wargame HD, and although I haven't had a chance to play it yet, the general consensus seems to be that it's quite a good portable RTS. The art style reminds me of Nintendo's Battalion Wars.

  6. I'm currently playing Words with friends, an online scrabble clone, username is irononreverse if you fancy battling wits. Also Hotspring story, by the guys who did Game Dev Story.

A bit of great little war game as well but it's a bit difficult for me

  7. Quick demonstration of the upcoming wireless mirroring of game content in iOS 5 using an Apple TV. Similar to Nintendo's Wii U, games can potentially provide the player with different content on the handheld screen from what appears on the TV. In the demo, there's some visible lag when swiping outside of the applications themselves, but that disappears in-game.

  8. Whats the latest on the new iPhone btw? Last I heard was autumn for its release.

  9. Have you checked up on the features of iOS 5 and iCloud? That releases in the Fall and I would guess that the latest iPhone iteration will come around the same time. I think Apple is heavily emphasizing the software this time around, so expect some modest changes to the case (like an edge to edge screen) + the A5 processor (which is a graphics beast) + iOS 5 and iCloud (free syncing, back up, storage and push features that are pretty impressive and don't require you to own a computer at all).

  10. I picked up Little Wing's iOS version of their classic Tristan pinball table and have been delighted with it.

They didn't treat it like a port of the original PC version, but rather reimagined it as if it were a children's toy. The table is fully 3D, but changes to top-down view when you play. The art style is extremely simple, and the effect is that the table is crafted of painted wood plus the mechanical pinball elements. I don't use the term "charming" that often for video games, but this is one of those games that really has it. You literally feel like a kid playing it and that's a good thing. And the pinball itself is top-notch...easily one of the best for feel and physics in the App Store.

Really hoping that this does well enough for Little Wing for them to continue on with iOS versions of some of their other classic PC tables.

  11. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tiny-tower/id422667065?mt=8

I am compulsively checking my phone every five minutes. Its a blessing and a curse.

  12. This is an upcoming iOS game that look rather intriguing...Roboto.

  13. Roadrunner? *meep meep* and it's in a dusty environment.... otherwise it probly has nothing to doo with it lol

  14. And a couple more intriguing titles, both which use the Unreal 3 engine- Epoch and Afterlife: Ground Zero. Afterlife is basically just a tech demo at this point, but it's more evidence of rather high-end graphics, and it's billed as a survival horror game. Epoch looks like it has a Gears-esque style emphasis on shooting from cover, but with swipe mechanics of some sort for moving your character.

  15. I'm no good using the "d-pad" and "buttons" on an iphone while playing games because I can't feel them, what chance do I have using analogue sticks that you can't feel? I predict difficulty.

  16. am waiting till you can control these things with your thoughts. Those are the BEST controls, forget ANYTHING you can feel x|

  17. You'd have to have ultimate concentration for that though. If someone walks into the room you could die on whatever game you're playing.

  18. Depends on the game. Virtual joystick is pretty annoying for games like FIFA on the iPad, but is acceptable for others. I don't think Epoch is going to be using a virtual joystick (sounds like it's swipe and gesture oriented), and the controls in Afterlife were just thrown on there according to the developer, since this tech demo wasn't intended for public view originally. I've also found that tilt controls can work very well for frenetic action games. The iOS specific version of Speedball 2 provided a tilt control option that was far better than the virtual joystick.

  19. This is a genre of game (tower defense) that I'm usually not that interested in, but this one looks pretty slick: Anomaly Warzone Earth. Video is a developer walkthrough of one of the levels, and shows iPad gameplay as well as TV mirroring.
