iPad 3 (aka The New iPad)

It's pretty much 10x faster mang, and tegra 3 is already faster than Xbox 360 cuz the graphics are really good and stuff but ipad graphics will be 10 times better. Who needs next gen consoles, I'd rather pay twice as much for an iPad with awesome on screen touch controls.

  2. Re: The New Ipad (Ipad 3? what the hell is the name of this thing)

From the Tegra 3 press release, which is still available on the Nvidia web site...

"The new version of Tegra 3 for super phones runs at speeds up to 1.5 GHz. At the heart of Tegra 3 is its unique 4-PLUS-1 quad-core CPU architecture that delivers outstanding performance and amazing battery life, plus a 12-core GPU, to deliver up to 5x the performance of the world's first dual-core processor, Tegra 2."

There aren't any footnotes with specific benchmarks or technical clarification on the press release, and they make an even vaguer claim than Apple when it comes to their chip set: 5X the performance of the Tegra 2, but what performance specifically? Graphics? CPU? They don't say. A bit further down, they say the GPU delivers 3X the graphics performance of the Tegra 2, so that makes the 5X number even more mysterious.

Yes. If you want to use the term "misleading", then you need to actually back it up.

Hurray for whoever shorten the tittle.

  4. Re: iPad 3

    But it's not called ipad 3. :(

  5. Re: The New Ipad (Ipad 3? what the hell is the name of this thing)

They said the magic words for generalized statements, up to. That's general marketing speak and is sensationalism, but just as good as a foot note since any smart consumer will know to research what situations this "up to" applies. Displaying a slide that just states "Graphic performance" and a claim of 4x is so much more definite, and in turn purposely misleading.

I had no problem understand it. The first 5x claim references the SoC as a whole, while the second 3x claim is GPU only.

Yes the whole thing is marketing crap and has little interest to me, but it at least uses the appropriate wording. In this case they are only making such generalized claims because they are comparing to their own older product. When comparing to the competition I have never seen Nvidia or AMD make such generalized claims without direct proof to back it up.

Further more their 3x claim seems to be fairly consistently reproduced over a fair few benchmarks.

You already linked to the results for GLbench. They show that the iPad3 is up to 4x faster in one test that measures fillrate. Not an actual app that someone could use, a simulated benchmark of one aspect of the GPU. Everything else fell short of their 4x claim. So there you have it, they stated a general (or to be fairer to them, on average) 4x, not up to, and the results do not reflect that. Misleading.

  6. Well then what is it?

  7. ATT calls it iPad Generation 3

  8. on the Apple site, it just says the new ipad. on the box, it just says ipad, literally. apple is going back to the base name similar to the ipod touch, nano, shuffle, etc.

    Give me a break.

The graphic that Apple showed appeared in their media event. Who are the people in the audience at those things? I'll give you a hint: it's not the general public. Apple knows that anything they say at those presentations is going to be heavily analyzed in the media. Go onto Apple's web site and look at the marketing pages for the new iPad. They don't even mention the Tegra 3 or "4X", which means it's not exactly a centerpiece for selling the product to the general public. It's something they specifically put into the tech media presentation. They know people will test it based on that statement.

Does every single graphics benchmark rate as "4X"? No. Does that mean it's a misleading statement? No. As I'm sure you remember, you seemed to be skeptical earlier in this thread that Apple's hardware would even be capable of running the software smoothly at a resolution with 4X as many pixels to push around the screen as the iPad 2.

  10. Then they are using the generation to distinguish the model. G1, G2, and G3. This would be the iPad 3G. Of course that’s confusing because it’s an iPad 4G.

  11. yes but you would not know that unless you yourself were keeping tabs and/or wanted to be specific when you are talking about it.

nowhere on the retail box or product pages would you find apple putting a generation number on it. for example, do you know off the top of your head what generation ipod touch we are on now? How about ipod nano or shuffle?

  12. I haven't seen anyone using "iPad 3G". It's mostly "the new iPad/iPad 3", "3rd Gen iPad", or "3rd Gen 2012 iPad". "3rd Gen 2012 iPad" is probably the best. Apple's desktop/laptop models are usually only referred to by the year, as in "early 2006 MacBook Pro" or "late 2009 iMac".

  13. On the Apple support page the iPods are referred to by generation but you have to follow a check list to identify the generation. Seems silly to me. Why make it so hard for something that seems pretty important.

Here is the link for iPods. Couldn’t find a link for iPads.

  14. Looks like there have been some complaints about heat. The culprit seems to be the power draw of the new screen.

  15. Re: The New Ipad (Ipad 3? what the hell is the name of this thing)

I've never been trying to make it out as anything other than a tech presentation coloured over by marketing. The other examples I've mentioned of what Nvidia and AMD do with their graphics technology launches are the exact same situations.

No other company in the tech industry just blatantly states that their product is x times faster in general. It's vague and as it turns out, untrue.

Yes, except I was comparing to iPad 2, the iPad 3's fillrate is insufficient to render games using all of the iPad2's processing power at the native screen resolution. So either the fancy screen will be fairly wasted for gaming with upscaled games, or progress of game development for iOS will stay at the level it has been, in turn not getting any closer to the current gen consoles you seem to think it is right behind in graphics potential (based off vague misleading claims like the one we are arguing about).

  16. Anyone who's too confused can always reference the model number that is physically engraved on the back of all the devices.

  17. Re: The New Ipad (Ipad 3? what the hell is the name of this thing)

Untrue? When it renders twice as many frames at twice the frame rate of the Tegra 3? When it processes more than 4X the number of texels per second? Look at the triangle tests for textured/vertex lit, textured/fragment lit, and triangle/warm up from the chart I posted...all right in the ballpark of 4X.

I've also noticed that you ignored the language Asus used for the Transformer Prime web page, i.e., the 3D graphics "never before seen on a tablet". Yeah, that's laser accurate info from the non-Apple tech companies.

I'm sure some games will be upscaled considering that the current generation of consoles routinely upscaled games to 1080p. That's not going to be a surprise. However, you used the term "iPad 1.5" previously, which means you were thinking it would be common for users to accept a downgrade in detail from the iPad 2 in order to run the apps at such high resolution. That's obviously not the case.

I have an ipod that has model number A1418 what is that
