The Nightmare Before Christmas. It's hard to believe that came out 22 years ago. It's aged rather well.
But is it a Christmas film or a Halloween film? I'm never sure, best to watch it in November to be on the safe side.
Centurion Before he invented the iPhone and yelled at random employees, Steve Jobs was apparently the son of a famous gladiator who could just as easily run a marathon across the Scottish highlands as chop your leg off or jab a broken arrow into your eye socket.
My Neighbor Totoro I got curios about this film after seeing all the Totoro cosplay. So many people think it's one of the greatest animations of all time. Well as an adult I don't really get it but the kids like it.
Crimson Peak Hated it. Beautiful with nice sets and costumes and for the most part good enough special effects, but the writing, pacing, and half of the acting made it a chore to watch for me. I couldn't wait for it to end and I'm not someone who often feels that way with movies. It felt like Pacific Rim, but at least that movie was 50/50 ending up that way due to the ridiculousness of the whole concept and themes and can somewhat be forgiven (only somewhat) for it. del Toro has lost it in my eyes.
@bfun: I never get the love for Totoro. I like a lot of Ghibli's find but that one didn't really grab me at all.
Yeah, I'm starting to think it may have been a good thing that At the Mountains of Madness was shelved.
Totoro is charming because of the realism, time and location of the world it is set in. I find it like Kiki's Delivery Service in that it is very grounded with only one magical element pervasive throughout. Of course in Totoro is is never shown to be more than a childs fantasy, but there is plenty of evidence that hints at it being real in some form, but more than likely greatly exaggerated. For me it is relatable because of the realism and provides a window into a child like imagination long lost in most adults. I also liked how the sudden ending makes the whole thing feel like a snapshot of another world and someone's adventures in a particular part of their life, just like in Kiki's. Most movies lean far more on extreme drama to create an over the top story arc that compresses a lot into the duration. Both of these movies were refreshing in that I felt like I took a lot away from them without it seeming like an epic drama. That said my favourite Ghibli movies are epic dramas: Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa, Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away.
In regards to Ghibli movies I watched Arrietty the other day. It doesn't seem to be on anyone's favorite list but I thought it was pretty good. I could tell they put a lot of effort into the small perspective scenes especially with the sound. I also got Howl's Moving Castle and Castle in the Sky which I'll probably watch next week. I saw Ponyo about a year ago and thought it was really nice looking but all together too nonsensical and uninteresting. Hotel Transelvania II I like the first one but this one wasn't worth seeing. 5/10
Circle A bunch of people wake up in a mysterious circle. They have to decide who dies as it goes on. An interesting little sci-fi-ish thriller that held my interest. Heavy on the dialogue but it's written well.
I watched bone tomahawk and hidden recently. Bone Tomahawk was interesting as it was a western horror. had the slow placing of your normal westerns but the gore was tremendous during the climax. Hidden was different too. kept you interested on what happened to get them in that situation and kept it a bit different from most movies of its genres.
Howl's Moving Castle It's pretty good and it held my attention through most of the movie but I thought the ending was a little odd and didn't make sense. I've read it was an anti war message so I guess that is what it was.
I quite like naussica and princess mononoke too. Pom poko is worth a watch too. I've yet to watch princess kaguya or whatever it's called.
Terminator Genisys Starts off as what seems like a modern remake of the original Terminator. Then it goes totally off the rails with a new timeline that's a complete mess. The story is all over the place and makes very little sense. Khaleesi seems like she's just in it for a paycheck. She sleepwalks through all her scenes. The guy they got to play Kyle Reese is a real shitty actor. Arnold looks really old. This movie had no reason for existing. Just go rewatch T1 and forget this lame cash grab. 3/10
