Wasn't it jameswashere or whatever he's called who went all whacko about Ingloreus Bastards? He was an odd fish.
Yes, he had a total meltdown when I told him he had shitty taste in movies. He spammed the place up, and then I think he disappeared.
X-Men First Class Don't believe the hype. Don't believe the reviews; this is an abysmal movie. After reading so many glowing reviews I went in expecting it to be one of the best comic books films I've seen. The stuff with Michael Fassbender, (from Inglorious Bastards), as a young Erik Lensherr hunting down and killing Nazi's in Switzerland and South America was pretty cool but the rest was just fucking awful. I was told by a friend later on that the Nazi hunting stuff came from a dropped/canned script for a Magneto origins movie; that might have been interesting if they'd kept that theme.
Flags of our Fathers This is hardly a movie about Iwo Jima, A video about Flags (or fags if you'd rather) or even about kicking evil nihonese booty!! I'm rather disapointed as this video centers on the typical experiences of three of the guys that raised the flag at Iwo Jima before and after the battle. It than turns into a stereotypical sob story about "my experiences in 'Nam" or some shit. Probably ran out of budget so they pussied out. I don't CARE! pop a watermelon I WANT FLYING BODY PARTS DAMNIT!! The Bluray I got from Netflix was messed up as well... I had to skip around a bit. But at least it was in color this time.
@Ichiban It looked like crap from the previews. I didn't understand why it was getting such good reviews.
From the reviews I'd read in the newspapers, including some English Broadsheets, this was one of the best comic book movies ever made. They're all running the story how English directors are making great comic book movies; Thor, Batman and this were the ones they were talking about. From the reviews I thought I was going to see something spectacular but quite clever and thought provoking. That wasn't true at all. Don't get me wrong some elements do work but I think that's more down to Fassebender being a fucking awesome actor who can speak German fluently so when he's killing Nazis and doing the magneto stuff it's cool. Unfortunately that comes to a halt and it turns into this "teen adventure" which made my fucking toes curl it was so cringeworthy. They had a brief Hugh Jackman cameo where he tells Fassebender and McAvoy to "fuck off" and that's his scene done. Probably one of the better scenes in the movie and it lasts all of ten seconds... I think a lot of reviewers as somehow giving this movie some of the credit from Kick Ass since it's the same director. But where Kick Ass didn't take itself seriously this does and it fucking blows.
This seems to be the recurring theme in movies based on the pacific theater. Remember The Thin Red Line? zomg. I'm watching The Pacific now (HBO miniseries.. other side of Band of Brothers, is from Speilberg and Hanks too) and it's following the same route. Definitely not on the same pace as Band of Brothers.
Nobody seems to take the Pacific theater that seriously when making war movies. The Thin Red Line was indeed horrible, the parts of Flags of Our Fathers I've seen did nothing for me, and The Pacific was a snoozefest. I think it comes down to the Japanese being a largely unseen enemy that just aren't as compelling as the Nazis.
The worst part is that I sat through that with a friend who thought Geishas were prostitutes and he'd get to see a lot of Japanese girls having sex. I kept telling him it wasn't what he thought it was. He was so disappointed when he realized we were watching an extremely long and boring chick flick.
Paul It was entertaining, but never laugh out loud funny. But I'm not a fan of Seth Rogan, so that could be part of it.
Hanna It was pretty good. Cate Blanchett played a stone cold bitch who murders a grandma and a whole family in cold blood, and it was very satisfying seeing her get what was coming to her.
Riding Giants A rather excellent overview of the history of big wave surfing directed by Stacy Peralta, who was one of the original skateboarding Z-Boys from the 1970's (which will be familiar to anyone who's seen Lords of Dogtown or Dogtown and Z-Boys).
Megamind & Despicable me Been a while since I watched films of this genre so thought I would watch them. I enjoyed them both, but thought Megamind was much more funnier.
True Grit The Coen Brothers reboot/remake or whatever you want to call it. Can't say that I prefer it over the original...Bridge's interpretation of the Rooster Cogburn character is fairly lifeless compared to John Wayne's, and the Coen Brothers made the odd choice of largely ignoring the wilderness settings in terms of cinematography. Strangely generic and dull in that regard.
I just watched this yesterday. I wasn't expecting where this movie went from the trailers AT ALL. Definitely disguised as a Sci-Fi. Much like how Amber Heard is disguised as a sexy heterosexual.
