That's kind of how I would describe it. It was like half spoof of Drive, half homage to it. But it doesn't really work either way and it just ends up being mediocre. And while this movie had lots of music, none of it really clicked with the scenes or was memorable like the music in Drive. The Drive soundtrack perfectly fit the mood of the movie. Songs like Night Call and Real Hero are practically synonymous with the movie they fit it so well. I agree that all of this guy's movies are insanely overrated, except for Shaun of the Dead. This movie is a 5/10 IMO. Watchable if you're bored. But nothing memorable or great.
Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel It's an English low budget sci-fiction comedy. Kind of fun but not spectacular. 7/10 The Great Outdoors A comedy classic that's kind of shit by today's standards. 20% funny.
Passengers 7/10 It was entertaining enough as a scifi-fi love story. But it could've been so much better if they went in a different direction like thriller / survival horror. Spoiler: spoilers Would've preferred if Jim died and left Aurora contemplating the same morally questionable choice. The whole "you murdered me" didn't have the proper effect without opening with Auroras point of view. We already got too much time with Jim. It was easy to relate to his choice and sympathize. Also, Chris Pratt is just way too likable for this role. A creepy ugly actor would have fit better and made for a much better movie. Would Aurora forgive a creepy fat basement dweller that "murdered" her and want to live happily ever after?
People can go mad from just a short time in solitary confinement, and Jim was alone for more than a year, so I thought his choice was easy to sympathize with. Plus like you said, Chris Pratt is so likable that you just end up sympathizing with him rather than feeling repulsed by what he did, even though it is pretty creepy when you think about it. I liked the movie. I liked how it was about how people can have big plans for their lives, and life throws them a curveball and they end up doing something else. It seemed like in the end they had a pretty cool life traveling through space together. Movie was a solid 7/10 IMO. I thought it worked as both sci-fi and romance. They could have gone in a darker direction with it like you said, but I'm glad they didn't. They made a sci-fi film you can enjoy with your girlfriend or wife.
War for the Planet of the Apes It was a really good movie, but I can also see why it bombed as a summer blockbuster. It was really bleak and depressing. 8/10
Completely agree. The movie was really well done. I like how they completely focused on Caesar. Sometimes you just gotta take one for the team and make a meaningful movie even though you know that won't be blockbuster material for the average movie goer.
Exactly. This was a heartfelt drama about survival in a bleak post apocalyptic setting where humanity is on the edge of extinction. While this does have some great action scenes, especially the battle and avalanche at the end, the action isn't the main focus of the movie. It's more like watching something like Children of Men than a summer popcorn flick. It's also done from the perspective of the apes with the focus being on Caesar, rather than from a human perspective.
Blade Runner 2049 One of the best sci-if films I’ve ever seen. This is an uncompromising movie made for hardcore sci-fi fans and fans of the original movie. It isn't attempting to have broad appeal. I'm actually amazed it got made, and with such a huge budget. This is one of those movies you’ll think about long after you watch it. I thought it was actually a good deal better than the original Blade Runner. The nearly 3 hour long run time might make this tough to watch in a theater. You'll want to either find a theater with comfortable seats or catch this one at home. That being said, it never dragged. It has more action and better pacing than the first movie. They also nailed the soundtrack and visual styling. This one is even more stylish and atmospheric than the first Blade Runner, which is really saying something. 10/10
Thor: Ragnarok It was a good movie with enough humor to almost call it a comedy. I think it might have been influenced by the success of the retro undertones in Guardians of the Galaxy. I never though of Cate Blanchett as being sexy but dark goth Cate Blanchett is kind of sexy. https://i.imgur.com/ALgpXCQ.png?1
The Great Wall For some reason this movie reminded me of Conan the Destroyer. The scripts seemed familiar. It even had shitty acting. And now I'm remembering one of my first movie crushes.
Star Wars the Last Jedi It was really good, although a lot of it felt like a rehash of Empire Strikes Back. I guess if you're going to rehash something, rehashing the best Star Wars movie is a good way to go. 8.5/10
Spoilers - The scene with Kylo and Rey teaming up against the praetorian guard was awesome. That alone makes this worth seeing IMO as it’s one of the best lightsaber battles in any Star Wars film. Overall it was quite good, although some of it felt rehashed. The final battle was a bit too similar to Hoth in Empire Strikes back. There’s some moral ambiguity with Luke Skywalker that may divide fans. I actually liked that the morality in this one was more nuanced and not so black and white.
Nah it's quality always had a soft spot for that film. Always feels like Xmas when it is on. Was on TV a few days ago as well.
Well it was the first time I saw it so no nostalgia for me. It's probably the worst movie that I ever sat through.
Is that the one where Arnie fights Sinbad over a toy? That's pretty bad. But the one where Arnie has a butt baby might be worse.
