Last movie you saw?

  1. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (English Version)

Not a bad movie at all. It felt a little hard to follow in places since there were so many people in the family that he was investigating but it was entertaining none the less. It's pretty grim too and I've been told the swedish version is far more explicit and rougher so I might watch that tonight to compare it. Definately worth a watch though.

  2. Nice one Grim. I was looking for a comedy to watch and after checking out the trailer I liked what I saw. At first I thought it was going to be one of those teen slasher films though. That fat guy is from Kevin Smiths Reaper series.

  3. Yes he is, I believe his name was Sock. It is pretty good, well worth a watch.

  4. I'd curious to know your opinion after you've seen both of them. I've only seen the Swedish version, which I liked.

  5. Just finished watching it now. It was really good actually. That blonde bird who they help is well fit though. I'd smash it. ;)

  6. Sadly once you've seen one of them the other will be slightly boring. I'm not sure which I liked better. The Swedish version is a little bit less confusing and bit more explicit but the nudity is about the same. It had one more fight scene which I thought was pointless anyway. I liked a majority of American version better but the Swedish version had a darker feel and I think the ending makes more sense than the nicely F-ed up American version. I'd like to know which one follows the book better.

  7. I've heard Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is kind of rape-y. Is this true?

  8. It is part of the storyline. It's not as inexcusably horrific and graphic as in the movie Irreversible, but rape is rape I guess.

I should note that I have no idea how it is handled in the American version of this movie.

  9. Actually it was sodomy (twice) which I think has it's own legal classification.

  10. Hmm, forced sex seems like rape to me whether it's sodomy or intercourse. I'm not sure why that would be classified differently.

Also, I did some searching and from what I've read the Swedish version has the more graphic rape scene. I haven't seen the American version yet, though. I may watch it soon. I see what Ichi has to say about comparisons between the two versions.

  11. They are two different classification in a US court system but have the same punishment.

  12. In Time

This movie was hilariously bad. It reminded me of 1950s sci-fi in that it had a ridiculous premise that it took very very seriously.

It had so many terrible innuendos about time, I was ready to bang my head on the wall.

  13. Best friend drinks himself to death because he gets 10yrs. WHY?!

  14. The nonstop time innuendos had me going back and forth between cringing and laughing hysterically. There were some real howlers in there.

Also, the references to OWS and the 99% were about as subtle as a brick to the head.

My wife turned and asked me who was doing blow when they pitched this movie.

  15. Anyone seen that film the artist? It's meant to be quite good and rather humorous despite being a silent film.

  18. I watched The Tree of Life, Drive, and Blue Velvet on Blu-ray recently.

    The Tree of Life 8/10
This is not for most viewers. It does not hold the traditional act structure at all, and it's quite light on dialogue. General themes are presented, and the viewer is left to contemplate much of the rest. A wide variety of beautiful imagery and music is interwoven between the main storyline. This technique was used somewhat in other Malick movies like The Thin Red Line, but it's much more extensive in The Tree of Life. As far as the Blu-ray goes, this is among the best looking Blu-rays I've seen, and it may be the best ever in audio. It's 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, and it fills the room with magnificent aural beauty. I don't see how this could lose Best Cinematography. This is the Blu-ray you want to use to demo your hot new home theater setup, and the picture and audio quality are crucial components to this particular movie given the way it's presented. Try other Malick films like The Thin Red Line first, and if you don't like them, don't try this one except for a home theater demo disc. I happen to be a massive Malick fan, so I'm very pleased with it both as a movie and as a disc that can get the most out of my home theater.

EDIT: I had a good time sifting through some of the user reviews of The Tree of Life on imdb.com. It's about as polarized as it can get. I got a good laugh out of the knuckleheads who gave it 1/10 and wrote something along the lines of "I am reel smart and have sean all of Tom Hank's movies and have a 190 IQ, but this was so boaring & takes along time two watch. It is jus way to wierd." Yeah, you totally convinced me that you are a master film critic and have deep thoughts you were kind enough to share. Regardless, some things I read that actually were helpful were some of the comparisons to 2001: A Space Odyssey and the more experimental films from Tarkovsky.

    Drive 9/10
I'd probably rate this as the best film I've seen from 2011. I'm quickly becoming a fan of Nicolas Winding Refn. I've enjoyed all three of the movies I've seen from him (Drive, Pusher III, and Bronson). Drive, however, is by far the best of those. Curiously, there's also far less dialogue than in most movies. My current top 3 favorite movies from 2011, Drive, The Artist, and The Tree of Life, may have the least dialogue I can remember in modern film history. I was so glad to see the director take the story in the right direction just about every step of the way. A typical Hollywood director would have butchered this movie. I really can't think of any major faults with it. I got pulled into it right away and loved just about every aspect of it. The Blu-ray looks and sounds very good, but it can't even be part of the same conversation as The Tree of Life in terms of reference quality A/V presentation. I'm not surprised the Academy has no idea what to make of Drive. It's over their heads, although it is criminal that Refn isn't even a nominee for Best Director.

Blue Velvet is in my all-time top 10. That should tell you how much I like this movie. It's my second favorite David Lynch film after Mulholland Drive. The Blu-ray is pretty nice, especially considering this was made in 1986. The cinematography, sound, and score are all very important for this movie, and the HD treatment really brings out the colors and sound. This was a great addition to my Blu-ray library, and I think I only paid around $10 or so for it.

  19. A dangerous method

It's about how the rift developed between Freud and Jung, and Jung's affair with Sabina Spielrein.

It was pretty well done, but those who aren't interested in the history of psychiatry might be bored by it.
