Last movie you saw?

  1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes

    It was alright.

  2. Yeah I didn't know it was just a prequel so I was a little surprised as to the end.

  3. It's not exactly a prequel in the standard definition of prequel. I'm not sure why there was a bunch of people calling it a prequel. It's more of a reboot to the series to probably add on sequels. There is no continuity with it and Planet of the Apes (2001) with Mark Wahlburg at all.

  4. The Lady In Black:

I had heard this was good but I went around a mates to watch it and it was quite boring and had no scares whatsoever. Daniel seemed out of place to me as and far to young and girl voiced to be a dad.

  5. That was the impression I got from all the trailers for some reason. This movie was pimped so hard that I decided I'll probably never watch it just because they tried too hard in promoting it and the concept doesn't really interest me.

  6. Every movie I try to watch lately with around a 7/10 vote on IMDB seems to disappoint me a lot.

    Hugo

Nice art direction at times, although decent camera work definitely takes a back seat and instead the 3D effects are relied upon (I watched the film in "2D"). I didn't find any of the characters very convincing really. I found the fact that everyone in Paris had a British accent off putting, myself I'd prefer the film to be in French, but am also somewhat undecided whether putting on accents is any sort of acceptable hollywood friendly alternative to this. Well, the decision not to in this movie has swayed me towards preferring it. The first half of the story was very boring, and the second half a bit more interesting but somewhat contrived in actual execution. There were some scenes that did look good, so if you do watch it, make sure it's a high res version if you have the equipment for that.

Any recent movies that are rated 7-8/10 on average that are actually good that someone can recommend?

  7. I'm going to watch A Separation this afternoon. I'm excited that it's actually arrived here. I've been waiting for quite some time to see it.

  8. Is that the Israeli drama about a couple getting divorced? Sounds like the most Borg film of all time but I've heard it's decent.

  10. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further!

  11. That scene is awesome because it's so hilariously overacted and out of character. They were trying so hard with those movies to make Picard into an action hero, whereas he was an intellectual in the TV series. I remember in one of them they had him wearing sunglasses and driving a dune buggy. It was ridiculous.

  12. why the heck would you watch hugo and expect a cinematic masterpeice? it's a children's movie for god's sake! Not that I'm belittling childrens movies, but their dumbed down. I mean that's like a prerequisite! the kid on Mars Needs Moms gets to Mars by hugging on the outside of a spaceship for goodness sakes!

  13. That's almost as ridiculous as that ginger poof in Ratatouille speaking American in Ratatouille.

  14. It's from Iran, home of some very gifted filmmakers. I hadn't seen anything from Farhadi, but I plan to track down his movie About Elly next now that I've seen this.

    A Separation 8/10

This was a good movie. The acting was quite strong, including the child acting, and the story turned out to be more complex than I expected. I'm hesitant to go into detail about the plot, as the best things about it are the storytelling, acting, and directing. What I can say without spoiling anything major is that the characters are more realistic and genuine in that each have their own imperfections, and the writer/ director Farhadi doesn't take sides with the storytelling, meaning there is not a clear good or bad character. It raised some interesting moral questions that will evoke discussion, but I think it would be best to avoid spoilers and watch it yourself without expectations about the plot.

  15. Other than Drive, I just watched it a few weeks ago and it was awesome. That's probably why everything else sucks in comparison. :(

  16. Yeah Ryan Reynolds stole the show with his manly manly pecks!!

  17. Well I heard it had something for everyone. I didn't expect the story to be marvelous, but I din't expect it to be as clunky as it was. I did expect the visual experience would be fairly good. Obviously the people who thought it delivered were just wowed by the 3D.

I wasn't just talking about Hugo specifically when I mentioned disappointing movies, there have been quite a few lately that have been rated fairly decently but underwhelmed. I didn't expect Hugo to be something other than a family movie, but maybe my criticism of the choice of accent/language was a bit out of place considering the audience. That was more of just a general annoyance I was expressing.

  18. I have no idea why that movie didn't clean house at the Oscars. There was something political going on there I think. Easily the best movie of last year by a long shot.

  19. Wasn't he American though? I'll assume you're being facetious here...

I guess this backs up my claim as to another kids movie where they didn't just make everyone default to british/american. It's probably what I had in mind when being surprised at the move they made since that movie did just perfectly and is more in line with what I was expecting this one to be like... only a bit less kid orientated and not animated, obviously. In the end this was definitely less enjoyable than Ratatouille.
