Last movie you saw?

  1. I wasn't crazy about the Nolan remake, but that's probably only because I saw the original. I do remember the cinematography and technical areas were pretty good. I also liked the actors involved. The story just got a bit hammy at the end, which wasn't present in the original.

  2. Memento

I actually watched it two weeks ago, but this thread just reminded me. I really loved the way it was done, the whole experience was just so refreshing. You actually feel exactly as the main character Leonard would at the start (end) of the movie. The way it slowly works backwards to slowly piece everything together is just perfect. I still came away with the impression that the movie didn't really "go" anywhere, but overall it didn't matter. This would have to be my favourite Chris Nolan movie of those I've seen.

  3. @aks

I'm sure if I had seen the Norwegian original first, my opinion would have been different.

Al Pacino and Robin Williams were both pretty good in it, which was surprising as their careers have taken a nosedive in recent years.

  4. alterego? What are you trying to say? All film nerds look alike?

  5. I've only seen the original version of Insomnia, and found myself thinking it didn't quite live up to it's reputation at the time.

  6. I was tired and both names started with A.

  7. Ouch, so you could've called him armadeadn too

  8. Now that would be a burn

  9. I watched The Assault last night and it was pretty badass. The movie builds up to the climax very well. It's based on the true events that happened in 1994 where 4 islamic algerian terrorists took over a grounded Air France airplane and the French GIGN had to storm the airplane with civilians still on board. The news footage they used in the movie was the real footage shown when it was actually happening, I believe.

  10. Battleship

It stars Rihanna and some guy who's been in a bunch of failed movies, and it's based on a board game, except with aliens. It was every bit as bad as you would imagine. It had a huge budget, but everything about it felt straight to video.

Also, I'm convinced Taylor Kitsch is part of some Producers style money laundering scheme. You put this guy in a movie and it's guaranteed to flop. Yet they keep casting him in these extremely expensive movies. Something is fishy.

  11. Is he like the bad version of Nicholas cage?

  12. You're implying there's something good about Nick Cage.

  13. His Wickerman remake is one of the bestworst films I've ever seen

  14. True. The Wickerman remake is a masterpiece of shit cinema. I love the part where he runs around punching out women in a bear costume. That whole movie is so bad it's compelling.

  15. I like Nic Cage films for some reason.

  16. Some of his stuff from the late 90s like Face/Off is decent. It's his more recent stuff that's awful. The guy is extremely hammy and only works in certain roles.

  17. I thought he was good in Kick Ass. But then again I love that film. Well looking forward to the sequel.

  18. Yeah, but that was a role that called for hamminess. He's running around in a friggin' Batman costume.

    ....

    Solaris, 2002 remake

I think I found the cure for insomnia. They should market this movie as a prescription sleep aid. It actually did get better as it went, and the ending was sort of haunting, but it took way too long to get there.

I'm sure the Tarkovsky original is better. May give that a try at some point.

  19. Cage was great in Adaptation, Leaving Las Vegas, and Raising Arizona. But he hasn't impressed me much in the past decade.

  20. True. I get the impression he's yet another actor who stopped caring after he got an Oscar.

    ....

    LA Confidential

Now I know what LA Noire was referencing. Pretty much everything in that game was ripped from this movie.

That being said, I wasn't that enamored with the movie. It seemed overly broad and unfocused, and like it was mainly about 1950s period nostalgia.
