Last movie you saw?

  1. @Armadeadn

Resevoir Dogs was an awesome movie. I'm wondering if it's maybe a film that just isn't going to make sense to a British audience. Things like the scene in the restaurant about tipping for instance.

  2. I thought you didn't like films that "rip off" other material.

  3. That's one of the amazing things about Tarantino. He'll take source material that's basically garbage, like crappy 70s exploitation movies or that Hong Kong thing you just mentioned and make it awesome.

    .....

    Flight

Once again, Denzel delivers. This was an awesome movie, and probably Denzel's best role other than Training Day. The plane crash scenes are scary as fuck. It does a good job of showing what alcoholics and drug addicts go through before they hit rock bottom.

    Lincoln

I'm going to be the dissenting opinion on this one and say that I thought it was a lifeless bore. It had way too much stilted dialogue delivered by men with fake beards in dark rooms. It also seemed to be more about the 13th Amendment than Lincoln himself. I didn't really come away feeling like I knew any more about Lincoln the man. This was about an interesting man and an interesting period in American history, but Spielberg failed to make the material really come alive. I kind of felt like I was watching a made for TV movie at times.

  4. The Hobbit 8/10

I wasn't bothered much by either 3D or 48 fps. Occasionally I found the transition from slow moving scenes to scenes with a lot of motion to be a bit jarring, but that's about the extent of it. The general pacing could have used some work, but otherwise I found it to be very enjoyable. There were some minor things that irritated me regarding loyalty to the original source material (why doesn't Gollum strangle anything? what's with Jabba the Orc?), but overall the theme was definitely intact. Jackson went a bit too far on the continuum of outrageousness much of the time, but that's nothing new for him, and it's not like the source material was meant to be anywhere close to realistic either.

The "outrage" of the film critics over 48 fps seems overblown; they need to get over it. Overall, it wasn't up to the standard set by the Lord of the Rings films, but I wasn't expecting it to be as good. I think I'll need to see all 3 Hobbit films together to really give a complete assessment of this. The Hobbit was one story, not 3, just as the Lord of the Rings was (I don't want to hear any bullshit about it being 3 separate books; it was divided into 3 volumes for publication purposes). The ending won't appeal to everyone, and it will probably drive film critics nuts, but I personally don't mind it and in fact expected it. Bring on the next two.

  5. @monkey I guess I just didn't know what to expect from it really. I knew it was uber popular and had the ear cut off scene but that was it. When I found out it was an hour and a half of men arguing I was disappoint to say the least.

  6. I think part of the reason I liked it so much is because I'm a huge fan of Harvey Keitel, and think he's a seriously underrated and underused actor. He featured pretty prominently in Reservoir Dogs, whereas he just has cameos in Tarantino's other stuff.

  7. I finally got a chance to catch fellowship extended edition and noticed they put in a scene after frodo was stabbed by one of the dark riders. he was laying next to where bilbo and the group fought the mountain trolls and their statues were in the background. that's pretty cool continuity.

  8. yeah that was an awesome scene (just because of the nerd factor) I saw that too and was impressed... but that was 8 years ago dude! lol gonna talk about Star Wars extended cuts now? If I remember right there's like ONE seen in naboo added to the SW extended cuts. What a downer huh?

  9. I noticed the three stone trolls the first time I watched it, but I've read the books more than once and knew exactly where they came from. There were some key elements that Jackson clearly changed, but I think there's no doubt that he stuck pretty closely to the theme of the source material. There were also some key lines pulled verbatim from the book, which readers undoubtedly enjoyed hearing. For example, the line from Gollum declaring an eternal grudge against Bilbo Baggins was pulled right from the book.

  10. I had this habit back then of buying dvd's on their release day and never watching them. I literally bought all of the extended editions when they first came out and didn't watch any of them. I did the same with The Departed and Star Wars ep 3. I finally watched those 2 last year. I just watched fellowship last night. I'll probably catch Two Towers extended tomorrow and then catch Return of the King extended sometime before the end of the week.

  11. I did the same thing with all the LOTR extended DVD editions. What a waste. I can't be bothered to watch them now as I'd rather see the blurays.

  12. For me it felt like Slum Dog Millionaire. It was a bit long in the middle but a good movie. I saw it in 3D and that worked pretty well.

  13. The use of 3D was terrific in The Life of Pi. I agree they could have edited a bit of it out, but overall I enjoyed it.

  14. Robin Hood (2010)

Was on TV last night and nothing else was so I decided to give it a go. It wasn't too bad in the end, it was nice to see a Robin Hood story that didn't follow the normal script.

  15. The Hobbit

Overall it had a bit of a rushed feel. Not as good as LOTR but it was still good.

  16. I thought the 3D was good but didn't really notice too much of it to be honest, I was expecting much more of a visual feast than was delivered. I'd heard it was "the next avatar" in terms of 3D usage. I personally think Avatar, Transformers 3 and Toy Story 3 all made better use of 3D.

  17. Silver Linings Playbook

This is that extremely rare romantic comedy that's actually both funny and romantic. And I despise romantic comedies, so you know it must be good.

    8/10

  18. I was going to see this movie this evening, but it was sold out. I saw Django Unchained instead, which I liked quite a bit.

I plan on seeing Les Miserables (talked into seeing that tomorrow), Zero Dark Thirty, and Silver Linings Playbook next.

Also, How to Survive a Plague is on netflix. I watched half of it last night and plan to finish it soon. It's been very good so far. It's an Oscar nominee for Best Documentary this year.

  19. Seven Pyschopaths

I guess I can't completely judge it because I ended up turning it off after about 30 minutes. It was like some inept Tarantino knockoff. It reminded me of those Boondocks Saints movies, which were also completely awful. I think I'd rather spend my time watching an actual Tarantino movie instead of a cheap imitator.

  20. Tremors 2

The first was actually an enjoyable movie. The second is just awful. Bad acting, bad puppets. Now on to the third.
