  1. The Master

I liked how it ripped on Scientology. Philip Seymour Hoffman was a dead ringer for L Ron Hubbard. Amy Adams was really good in her role as the Hubbard character's controlling wife. That being said, Joaquin Phoenix looked way too old for the part he was playing. They should have cast a younger actor.

  2. This is coming out in the U.S. soon, and I believe it already ran in the UK...but it's a great trailer.

  3. Watched Taken 2 last night and it was a good action film but that was all. The first one was better.

  4. Been on a bit of a movie watching tear of late. Here are the most recent:

Dredd - I wasnt aware this movie even existed until a couple of days ago. Which is a damn shame, because as far as dystopian, sci-fi, mindless action films go, this one is tops.

Premium Rush - Lost interest with 10 minutes left to go. Take Hackers, and replace the douchey, hipster pukes on laptops with douchey, hipster pukes on fixie bikes, and you will have a reasonable facsimile of Premium Rush.

Seven Psychopaths - Another winner. Sam Rockwell is all sorts of amusing in this one. Highly recommend.

Pitch Perfect - Meh. If your some sort of Acapella enthusiast, then you will like this film. Found it mildly entertaining.

  5. Intouchables

A good mix of comedy and drama. It was actually pretty hilarious even in translation, but I'm sure it would have been even funnier if I understood French. I thought it had a good message about how disabled people don't want to be treated like invalids.

    9/10

  6. Lockout

Stupid movie. I believe someone wrote a script for a FPS game that was so crappy they threw it away. Then someone pulled it out of the trash and made this movie with it.

  7. hahahahhaha. Isn't that the one with space jail? That looked lame as hell.

    Here Comes the Boom

Kevin James wasn't even remotely believable as an MMA fighter, even with the better shape he got into for the movie.

  8. Dredd

Yep, like others have said already, this is a good one. Very simple story and no frills budget, but effective at making you believe in the Mega City setting and the idea of Judges. RoboCop crossed with Dirty Harry.

  9. The Perks of Being a Wallflower

A terrible teenage angst movie with a lot of bad acting and annoying characters. How the fuck does this have an 8.2 on IMDB?

Other movies with an 8.2, so you have a frame of reference: Blade Runner, Heat, Scarface, Gran Torino, Fargo, The Deer Hunter, The Big Lebowski, Sin City.

  10. Newer movies can often have higher ratings, like Looper. Usually these ratings go down over time when people with taste are tricked into watching it because of the high rating and then vote it down even lower than they would normally rate it, like Looper (which is still rated too high by at least 1 star).

  11. It was lame. Space jail, everyone escapes, president daughter gets captured, the only person who can save the day is some convicted tuff guy, and the bad guys have Irish accents.

  12. It wasn't a bad movie if you knew what you were getting yourself into. I thought it was a fun movie. Basically an 80's/early 90's action type movie with modern day effects.

  13. It actually kind of sounds like they tried to remake John Carpenter's Escape From New York, except in space.

  14. Basically. Guy Pearce's character literally was played out exactly like someone out of 80's/90's action films, from his lines to his character's background.

  15. It was stupid for many reasons. One of them was the giant red button that turns on all the station guns which then shoot at everything flying by the station.

  16. Dredd

I enjoyed it - thought it did a much better job in tone than the 90s film; felt it captured the feel of the comic. Shame it missed the epic scale of mega city one but, with the budget this had, it's understandable. Would love to see more films but I don't think it'll happen.

  17. How the fuck is The Big Lebowski an 8.2? It isn't fit to be a 2.8.

  18. What did you find so bad about it? I thought it was a bit strange and quirky at the first watch, then everything from it stuck with me and it got better in my head. The second time I watched it I thought it was quite good.

  19. Yeah, I have no idea why Supersonic hates it so much. It's one of my favorite comedies. Maybe he just didn't get the humor. Or maybe he focused too much on the plot? The plot is supposed to be a clusterfuck that goes nowhere. That's the whole point.

  20. Dredd

I really enjoyed this movie. I thought it was a great throwback to the ultra-violent, over the top action classics of the 80s and early 90s like Robocop and Total Recall. Karl Urban was pretty good at delivering one liners while killing bad guys and Lena Headey played a good villain. I thought it did a good job of explaining how violent crime had reached such insanely epidemic proportions in the future that judges became necessary. The premise of the film was simple but clever, and led to some pretty suspenseful situations. The action scenes were well filmed, and thankfully didn't have that annoying shaky cam bullshit that's all the rage right now.

It seems like the critics loved Dredd. It has a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is very high for an action movie. But it didn't do well in theaters for some reason. I'm not really sure why. The Stallone version was awful, and I'm wondering if that put people off this one.

    8.5/10
