  1. Skyfall

A good film, not great. I was a little disappointed because I'd heard that it was awesome. The villain was interesting enough, cold, calculated, but he had a pretty silly motive in my opinion. Also watching him made me think the Bond crew were trying to create their own Heath Ledger's Joker. I've searched online and I still can't find out how Bond managed to survive being shot twice then falling over 80 feet into water, M was even writing his obituary! The only explanation I've found is "He's Bond, he can survive anything". Not sure about the setting of the end of the film, are they trying to say Bond is Scottish?

The film was well paced though and apart from the seemingly endless establishing shots there wasn't a point where I thought the film was dragging. I thought it was much better than tha piece of shit Quantum of Solace (I had no idea what was going on through most of that film) but I didn't enjoy it as much as Casino Royale.

Not enough gadgets and no new car :(

Verdict 7/10. Worth a look but probably only once.

  2. I was very disappointed in how they handled the bond girl in this film. very disappointed.

  3. To be honest I've always found the Bond girl bit rather redundant. It's like yes, we get it, he's a babe magnet. Women will shag him on sight for some reason now can we please get back to the story? For the first 30 minutes all I could think was "My god Bond have a damn shave already, make yourself look presentable man!" I'm also growing tired of Daniel Craig as Bond. I thought he was a cool new take on the character when Casino Royale came out but now he just seems like a moody, emo, petulant, disobediant child. He used to have charm and wit, he's just an angry man now. Aparantly with drink and prescription drug troubles too.

This film has also left me chronologically confused. I don't know whether or not the Daniel Craig films take the other films into consideration but I thought Casino Royale was a reboot, that it was Bond's first mission since it was the first Bond book but in Skyfall they keep mentioning his age and how he's not a young man anymore.

It's still a good film, but the more I think about it the more I find I dislike about it.

  4. I thought M was the bond girl on this one

  5. You won't be saying that about the next one.

  6. Quantum of Solace didn't feel like a "Bond film", BUT it was a fantastic action movie. Fast paced non-stop action from start to finish. It reminded me a lot of T2, the most perfect action movie ever contained on film.

I was entertained watching Skyfall, but didn't like the story. At it's core, Bond failed the mission objective and that isn't what I paid to watch. In fact, story wise everyone would've been better off if Bond sat this one out.

    I also got that vibe.

  7. You liked Quantum of Solace but hated The Big Lebowski? I'm starting to think you just have terrible taste in movies. Quantum of Solace was a pile of shit.

  8. It was a good action movie. There was virtually nothing in it to slow down the pacing, it was like one long 2 hour action sequence.

  9. Action packed? I remember it being a snoozefest where Bond wanders around the desert in some South American country trying to save people from an evil villain who wants to charge them more on their water bill.

Are you sure you're even thinking of the right Bond movie? The Pierce Brosnan 007 movies were always action packed. Maybe you're confusing it with one of those.

Maddox explains better than I can why Quantum of Solace is an awful movie:

  10. I didn't really think too much of Casino Royale and never bothered with Quantum of Solace. Craig is good as Bond, but they haven't had a clue how to write 007 films in decades. I think Pierce Brosnan had maybe one Bond film with a decent screenplay.

  11. Goldeneye was pretty good all around. The rest of the Brosnan 007 movies were action packed, but badly written and cheesy.

  12. You don't like the big Lebowski!?

  13. I remember QoS being really disappointing. As I intend to nothing tomorrow then I might rewatch it, just to see if there's any truthiness to your opinion.

  14. Hmm. Maybe I will have to re-watch QoS. Or monsly can settle this tomorrow.

  15. Considering you couldn't even remember that you had seen the Avengers in the theater, my guess is you're thinking of a different Bond movie, probably Die Another Day or The World is Not Enough. Both of those were action packed but had virtually nonexistent plots. Quantum of Solace was anything but action packed. I remember literally hearing people in the theater snoring loudly through long stretches of it.

  16. Just finished watching QoS. It was quite a bit better than I remembered. Wouldn't say it was one of the best Bond films by any means but the action was pretty consistent and well paced throughout. The final action scenes in the hotel were rather lacking though, which is always a big pity especially for a Bond film.

I think my opinion is somewhat in the middle, with a lean towards this being a good film.

I'm slightly worried about re-watching The Big Lebowski now. If that turns from a good film to a bad one then I'm giving up on movies.

  17. i watched the secret world of arrietty last night. that was pretty damn well-made. nothing really happens, but it still ended up doing what it was trying to do.

  18. I never got around to seeing Arrietty. I'll probably track it down now that you have reminded me about it.

  19. I dont have the attention span for Miyzakis recent stuff. Ponyo put me to sleep. And you dont sound too excited about this one. Not gonna sell too many movies with the phrase "Nothing really happens".

  20. It's good to note that this isn't a Miyazaki film, but it is from Studio Ghibli. If you compare it to princess mononoke, castle in the sky, and spirited away, it's not even in the same league as far as "adventure" is concerned. There's a little guy in this movie named Spiller and if they had based this movie on his story, it would be in the same level as miyazaki's films in adventure.
