Maybe the wrong thread but to ask does anyone in the US here have Prime? I have it and I find that new films are added so rarely and when they are they are usually 3rd rate crap. The service says it has 1000s of films but they are 99% trash. Is it the same in the US? I don't think I am going to renew this year. Prime was good when it was £35 for free 1 day delivery all year but now it is £79 as you must have instant video with it I feel I am being ripped off. If they updated the films regularly I wouldn't mind but they are so out of date or never updated, they even removed the 'recently added' section from the UI on the Playstation!
Yes. Also Netflix streaming is the same way. Just old crappy films. Netflix is really not a complete service without the disc portion.
The best streaming option in the UK is Sky, you can get it for £9.99/month streaming or £16/month if you want it as part of the TV package on the PVR (but they always offer half price for 6 months at least once a year and you can keep taking this over and over). They add new content every week. They always get new films at least 1 year before the other streamers and normally a few months after they come out on DVD. For example last week the new films were Guardians of the Galaxy (6-7 months old) and Edge of Tomorrow (9 months old). So you really don't have to wait too long to see films you missed if you don't want to buy them. Before streaming was a thing Sky were the only option for payed movies in the home via satellite/cable since the 80s so no surprise really they have the best content still. I think you get 10 channels and then a huge film library for your payment each month on both streaming (Now TV) and PVR (Sky or Virgin).
In the United States, most films are available as rentals via streaming about 1-2 months after they hit the home market as a disc/download purchase.
You can rent here in pretty much the same time but if you subscribe to a monthly service you have to wait 6-9 months for it to become 'free' on your service. Think rentals are £4+ depending on film and SD or HD.
Netflicks plus unblockus is a pretty good combo I find - switching regions is easy and there's lots of choice across the world.
In the US Prime added a several good shows. Sopranos, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, Rome, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Flight of The Concords, Eastbound and Down, True Blood, Big Love, Sons of Anarchy, OZ, Hannible, Justified, Californication, The Good Wife, American Horror Story, Archer, Always Sunny in Philidelphia, and The Americans. Their movie selection is worse than Netflix but sometimes they might have something Netflix doesn't.
Home It was Boring. It didn't have the intelligence or Wall-e and there wasn't enough humor to keep kids and adults entertained. Overall a big let down coming from DreamWorks'. 5/10
Britain's Supermarket Revolution I sat through documentary entirely on the attractiveness of the narrator with a porn star name, Cherry Healy. It wasn't the worst thing I've seen, I guess... 5/10. Was legit impressed by this grocery version of Amazon they have over there @ 6:14
The Gambler Entertaining. Jarring transitions between comedy, drama, philosophy, tragedy, and noir.... But still entertaining. 6/10
It's a hilarious movie. Anyone who hasn't seen it should watch it. Probably my favorite comedy other than Tropic Thunder or Ghostbusters.
HBO's The Jinx Really scary. What the hell do you do when a serial killer who enjoys dressing like a woman and hunting and dismembering people is also a billionaire and keeps getting away with it due to high priced lawyers?
God this guy can act. So many different types of characters different in every way. Looking forward seeing this.
The Book Thief It was long and slow. It had an unusual and original narrative but at times it also seemed cliche. 7/10
The ABCs of Death 2 More horror anthology stuff in the same spirit as the first. Each letter of the alphabet is a short horror film by a different director based on a word they've chosen. Pretty decent overall, although there's a huge range in quality as you might expect.
Contagion A lot of big names probably made this movie better than it should have been. I enjoyed it but it left too many questions unanswered at the end. For instance Jude Law plays a really interesting character but we can only imagine what his real role in the outbreak was. 7/10
