This is them trying to position the 1080ti at $800+ I won't be upgrading my 980ti just yet. Hopefully the 1080ti will be a nice bump up. These fan issues, throttling all need to be ironed out. Shame I have to wait 9 months :/
The 1070FE has a bit of a throttling issue as well. After it's warmed up the 980Ti has just the slightest edge.
There been some criticism that the 1080 was a soft launch as it's been out of stock most everywhere. Of course Ebay has plenty if your willing to drop $1000 on one. Amazon cards are being bought and then resold as 3rd party for $900. Newegg is in on it too. Cards are out of stock in store for MSRP but then they have them for $800 on their ebay site. I'm sure they come from the same inventory. http://www.ebay.com/itm/PNY-GeForce...=item464ef0bea1:g:lPMAAOSwVyRXTwm~&rmvSB=true
So the GTX 1080 and 1070 have had a paper launch, and are ridiculously overpriced when in stock. And they have throttling issues, so they don't perform to expectations under sustained loads. Seems like all AMD needs to do is deliver the RX 480 on time, at $200, and with good performance around that of a GTX 980, and they will take back a lot of market share. A $200 card that will max out all games at 1080p that you can actually get a hold of vs $370 and $700 cards meant more for 1440p or 4K that aren't actually available and when they are not for those prices. Seems like an easy choice for most people.
Nvidia has decided to do away with the special 3/4 Sli enthusiast keys but will now only support 3/4 Sli in benchmark tools. So people that want to drop a few thousand to get benchmark bragging rights still can but they wont be able to game with their systems. I actually think this will be the last generation of Sli and crossfire. DX12 will allow game developers to support multiple GPUs without the need of Sli or Crossfire. http://www.pcper.com/news/Graphics-...3-Way-and-4-Way-SLI-will-not-be-enabled-games
Agreed. My bet is this only truly affects about .001% of customers but the idea of mega multi card systems is certainly bigger than that. It's like the ultimate hardware end game just got a lot weaker. Superman left the planet and now we're stuck with Aquaman.
Tweaktown says the shortages will continue until late July or August which means Nvidia really released these cards early. The EVGA FTW 1080 is going for about $1700 on Amazon right now. The 1070FEs are around $575. It's also rumored Nvidia is planning on releasing a Titan in the near future. That would be surprising though since it's only competition would be the 1080. http://www.tweaktown.com/news/52650/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-stock-improve-until-late-july/index.html
Apparently MSI and ASUS has been caught tampering with the 1070/1080 review sample they give out. The review samples run faster and benchmark higher than consumer versions. I guess this is pissing people off because it's dishonest. EVGA responded today. Gotta wonder if this will actually affect MSI and ASUS sales. http://www.gamerevolution.com/featu...r-gtx-1080-and-1070-review-sample-controversy
Probably not. As far as I can see, people are just snatching up whatever is in stock. By the time these things become readily in stock for the masses, people will have forgotten about the controversy,
Right. Not right now but down the road. EVGA is the most recommended brand followed by Gigabyte, MSI and maybe ASUS. Those two might take a drop on the recommendation ratings. Enthusiast remember things like bad warranties or support and tell others to avoid vendors that have wronged them.
Rumor is Nvidia will move the 1060 launch up to next month. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a paper launch tomorrow to coincide with the 480 launch. In fact one Hong Kong store even listed a launch date of tomorrow. I'm also betting Nvidia is going to have to drop the price on these a lot more than they wanted to. http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20160627PD207.html
I was able to score an EVGA geforce 1080 sc earlier today on newegg. evga had them on their own store also. They've been coming in and out of stock regularly (all oems) in the past few days. I saw a 1070 that was instock for about 2 days in a row.
Congrats. I can't believe you got one before OG10. Yeah the 1070s are now in more often than not. I might jump on one if they ever get to the the promised $380 but $430 is about the best I've seen. Granted that's not much more but for me it's a personal mission to not spend over $400 this time round. I paid $550 for my 780 Classified and it's life was mediocre. Also AMD is talking Vega and might make a 490 announcement tomorrow. Given the prices of the 480 I'd expect the 490 to be around $350 to $400. Hell I might even pick up a $200 480 4GB if I can find one. It looks like it will be 15% faster than my 780. If I can sell that for $150 I'll have a decent upgrade for $50.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125875 it's the only one that i've seen even remotely close to the msrp. we may see the full picture in a few more weeks but at least we know they're at least trying to hit that price point.
@bfun The 780 cards aged poorly. 3GB VRAM is simply not enough for modern games. Even just going up to 4GB makes a big difference. Kepler was already getting pretty dated by 2013. There were also some screwy things going on with the drivers. Selling my 780 Ti for a 980 right when the 980 launched in 2014 was one of the smarter hardware decisions I've made. I would agree that even the $200 RX 480 should be a very nice upgrade over a 780.
Maybe your wait is almost over. The GTX Titan P will be launched next month and a 1080ti sometime after that. Given there is no competition other than themselves I got to believe the 1080ti will have an MSRP of $800 and the GTX Titan P $1200 - $1400. https://www.techpowerup.com/223895/nvidia-to-unveil-geforce-gtx-titan-p-at-gamescom
