I was just guessing about the value of the GTX 1080. I hadn't researched the prices much yet. I've been out of town visiting relatives most of the day for Thanksgiving. Even if I get $200 to $250 it's a decent deal on the upgrade. I'd agree that AMD is giving very solid competition. I wish it had a high end card in the same range as the RTX 2080 to RTX 2080Ti although I have a Gsync monitor so that may have just complicated the situation. That's good to hear double fans can be as good or better than triple fans. After getting the loudest blower I've ever heard with a dumpster fire XFX card a few years back, I'm much more watchful of the comments and reviews regarding the cooling. I've been impressed with my GTX 1080's triple fans so I was going to stick with that if possible. Cool and quiet. Perhaps that configuration wasn't necessary.
GPU shortages are so bad that Nvidia is actually relaunching their older 1050Ti and 2060 cards to fill the gap. These use the older manufacturing node and DDR5 so it shouldn't affect production of their new cards. Now we'll have to see if AMD relaunches Polaris for the amazing price of $199...again. https://www.engadget.com/nvidia-revives-the-gtx-1050-ti-in-the-face-of-gpu-shortages-113533736.html
You should see the prices on used cards right now. I could easily sell my 1070 for $475 but I'd have nothing to replace it with.
