I upgraded my system memory from 16GB to 32GB. I don't think I needed it, but now I'm able to run Doom Eternal, Assassins' Creed Valhalla, android simulator, and about 50 chrome tabs all at once. I managed to get to 90% utilization.
Finally decided to retire the geforce 1080ti and got a geforce 4070ti. The sizes of these things just keep getting more and more ridiculous Pushes right up to my radiator but whatever.. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3VCFNc
I've noticed the 7900 XTX is actually in stock now and then on newegg, but the Nitro that I would want is always price gouged at ~$1500.
Ryzen 9 9900X, 64GB Corsair DDR5-6000, MSI X870E Tomahawk, Asrock Radeon RX 9070 XT Steel Legend, Antec Performance 1 FT, Corsair 850W Gold shift PSU, Noctua NH-D15 cromax black, 2TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD x 2
Are these upgrades solely gaming related? I've been itching to do a PC refresh for aesthetics alone. But my 1st/2nd Gen Ryzen stuff is still good enough. Gaming wise when I come off hiatus I still only play counterstrike lol. Got you beat on ram though. I was on 64-120GB years ago! Can't standing any sort of application slowness.
It will be used for a mix of things including gaming, work from home, and as a Plex server. That's why I went with the 9900X with its extra cores (better for general purpose use) rather than the 9800X3D with its fewer cores but additional cache (better for gaming). I'm going to order another 32GB Corsair kit and upgrade it to 64GB soon. My 4770K system was from 2013 and can't be officially upgraded to W11. The GTX 1070 I was using struggled with newer AAA games. So I figured it was time to finally upgrade.
I realized I never took a picture. I upgraded the RAM to 64GB. I'm running W10 Pro on it. But I'll upgrade to 11 at some point. I'm using ethernet, but there's a weird issue where the Wifi 7 adapter it uses is so new it doesn't even have a W10 driver and only works in 11.
I've noticed that you can find RX 9070s/ XTs that are getting close to MSRP (if such a thing actually exists) that can actually be purchased now. I see 4 9070s for $599 and over 25 of those ASRock 9070 XTs for $699 in stock right now at my local Micro Center. I need something higher end for it to be worth upgrading from a 7900 XTX Nitro; it would be less raw power and VRAM (which I need with an ultrawide monitor) but better features, particularly FSR4. Some people have managed to get FSR4 operating on the 7900 series RDNA3 GPUs with a workaround, which would be sacrificing a lot of performance compared to more advanced RDNA4 designed to support it, but it would sometimes worth it to me for substantially improved clarity over FSR3. Official support would be a really nice option for me.
I have a 9070XT and FSR4 is such a significant improvement over FSR3.1, that I would say it might be the best feature of the card. I have even been able to inject FSR4 into non-supported games with Optiscaler. It doesn't always work, but when it does, its a game changer. I've heard that the performance hit on 7000 series cards when manually running FSR4 makes it not really worth it. With a 7900XTX, can't you brute force a lot of games at native resolution? While the ray tracing improvements and FSR4 are huge selling points for the 9000 series cards, I don't know if that would be enough for me to move off of a 7900XTX. My 9070XT replaced a 6700XT, very different scenario.
I was coming from a GTX 1070, a nearly decade old card at this point, so the 9070 XT was a massive leap forward and a no brainer for the $599 launch price I was able to get at Microcenter. It's several times as fast as a 1070 and can run games that won't run at all on a 1070 like Doom the Dark Ages (due to permanently turned on ray tracing) or that run so slowly they are unplayable like Alan Wake 2. I would consider it a sidegrade from the 7900XTX: better upscaling with FSR4, improved ray tracing performance, lower TDP (runs cooler and quieter); but less VRAM and a slight loss in raw GPU performance. I have no idea if it would be worth it. Would you be selling your current card to cover the cost?
I plan to wait until a higher end model is released. Who knows how long it will be before that could be found for reasonable prices, though.
Did some tidying up. Added a couple more SSDs (another 990 Pro and a 970 EVO I bought a few years ago when they were dirt cheap) bringing the total SSD storage up to 6TB. Put in a GPU bracket to prevent sagging. I think I’m done for the time being. I might eventually replace the fans that came with the case with Noctua fans. They’re supposed to be coming out with other colors besides poop brown with their 140mm G2 fans in the near future. The case has 7 fans though so that will be a pain in the butt when I eventually do it. Lots of screws and little cables I would have to deal with, so meh for now.
I bought a 9070 XT at launch and on Monday of this week, whenever it was under load, I was suddenly having rainbow artifacts all over the screen. It failed a VRAM stability test almost immediately, so I had to warranty it. It cost a small fortunate to ship it for RMA too. Not thrilled.
What brand and model 9070 XT was it? Back in the day I had a Gigabyte GTX 460 that was artifacting. I had to go through three RMAs before finally getting one that worked properly. It was a real pain in the ass and I had to pay for shipping all three times.
Several years ago I had to RMA an EVGA 1070 FTW for flawed memory heatsinks. I got stuck with shipping as well. I wasn't thrilled.
It is a PowerColor Hellhound model. My first time buying that brand. Seems to be one of the better brands from what I have seen, so hopefully this is just a fluke.
I have no first hand experience with Powercolor. But they’ve been around a long time, and I’ve always heard they were one of the better AIBs for Radeon cards, up there with Sapphire. Hopefully it was just a fluke and you get a reliable replacement.
I had an awful an XFX card years back that was so bad I think I threw it in the trash rather than RMA it, but a lot of people love that brand and swear by them. You probably just got a lemon like I did. Most people rate PowerColor as a top brand.
