They come apart easily, just leave the heatsink on if you don't have any thermal compound on you. See mine has never had a yellow light, it just turns off and flashes red. I have 2 40GB models I can play with and getting the blu ray drive out is easy but I would feel bad taking my parents or sisters console apart especially if something did go wrong. Do you know if all of the fat model drives are compatible with each other?
Apparently the Bluray drive has a daughter board which is married to the mainboard so that would be a no no. The does seem to be a way of doing it in the hacking scenez, but you need a functioning PS3 to flash stuff.
Sony want to make things difficult for me then. I could always try threatening gamestation with the sale of goods act. I paid £425 for my ps3 so its not unfair to expect it to last longer than 4 1/2 years and you get 6 with the act. Seems a pain, especially if they let it get to small claims court but the actt is there to protect ctomers. I am good at kicckingg upba fuss and my work email with a signature from a solicitors firm always helps.
Does that still apply when you've taken the console apart? The most important thing is to try and get your PS3 breathing again so you can get your saves off it. Good thing your don't play singstar, that requires a phonecall and a week's wait to unlock the songs from your old machine. I'm currently at 8gb of songdata
Since it has not gone YLOD it may not be the heat sink. Have you checked up online to see what it could be if not?
I sent mine to get fixed by a company up here called Console Doctor but it was beyond repair - they gave me a trade in though for the broken machine against a new slim. Cost me £125 in the end. To be honest though, you'd get more if you stripped your machine down and sold the parts. I know BluRay lasers fetch a nice little sum on Ebay
I feel cursed, that's £350 odd I need to find now just one month before Christmas. And to top it off Mrs grim moved the wii nun-chuck earlier and now its lost... I JUST WANT TO PLAY A GAME!!!!!!!!
Holy cow grim, you lose everything. headset, nunchuck. I mean.. HOW? It's flipping white with a long cable! There's always Monster Hunter on the PSP, or maybe you've lost that as well now.
Or maybe it's time to visit the loft (attic...whatever it's called in American terms) and dig out that game boy advance you left for dead. (Try out Golden Sun! Really an amazing timeless RPG game)
I have made a decision not to replace either console. So late in the generation I don't think its worth the £190 for a PS3 or the £150 for a 360. For all we know Sony or M$ could show up at E3 with something and threaten to release it before Christmas! I don't see why I should give either company that sort of money to reward them for the failure of building overheating consoles. I know its only my first PS3 death and it lasted 4 1/2 years but that just isn't good enough when you consider my Mega Drive still works! This is my 4th dead 360 which makes that side of it even worse and I have payed for 2 of them so I think I have given Microsoft quite enough money. For now I will stick with the Wii and 3DS and get the new Zelda and Mario 3D Land. Of course this means I will probably have to sell my stacks of 360 and PS3 games as there is no point holding on to them as I doubt either company will get BC right next gen. Just put my pennies away for the Wii U for now. That is after I have purchased a new DVD player, didn't expect both DVD players to die within a week. Maybe I should go back to WoW? My Laptop has 2 1/2 years left on its warranty so there is no worries if that explodes.
You could probably buy a cheap graphics card so you could still play the good multiplatform games until next generation.
I've had two Xbox's die, it's annoying. My Nes and Snes still work after like 15 years plus. Just get a second hand PS3 until PS4 comes out?
I'd recently found a ton of old ps2 games I'm playing right now. It pays to be slow to play new releases I'm hoping to get these on an android phone soon...
I may set up my PS2, could play FFX and FFXII again or search the endless racks of PS2 games at CEX for something interesting I haven't played.
RPG heaven! What about a new RPG or game you never got around to play last time? Rogue Galaxy? Legaia 2? Etc Etc..
I'm not seeing the PS4/Xbox 720 coming out for at least a couple of years (late 2013), but the WiiU may be an option worth waiting for if it does indeed entice the third party devs to come back.
