I think we'll be fine. The sites only been active for 2 days so unless we're really unfortunate this might prove to be a non-issue. Once the main site is finished and we get some content on there then it should definately not be a problem. @Chi: That's what it was at the old place; it's not enshrined in law we must call it that but I thought it would just seem familiar to see that here...easily changed.
So far I've tested the forums on: IE Firefox Chrome Safari iPhone Browser Android Browser Seems to work pretty well on all of them. I'm especially impressed with how well punBB works on mobile browsers. If anyone has a blackberry or Windows Phone 7, let me know what the experience is like. I'm more concerned with the mobile experience than anything, because that's how people are viewing the forums most of the time these days.
I have no idea, but I should test it out at least. Statistically speaking, since we're dealing with a more tech savvy crowd, people are most likely to be on Firefox or Chrome.
The message that I get is that it's security related, rather than adult content. It's pretty rare that you get the security warning with the Websense filtering software that my company has running, so that's why I wanted to at least mention it. Blocks for adult content are always specifically labelled as such.
Well, as it happens, I can tell you exactly what people are viewing the site with. The server has some interesting backend tools to give me stats and stuff of the visitors we get; nothing to uniquely identify anyone so don't worry. First up, an interesting fact. We have 27 registered members but we've had 90 unique visitors to the site. Since we're not crawled properly I'm going to assume that some of the 90 are previous site lurkers who've come to take a look and not fully signed up yet. Bots and Crawlers don't get counted in this Browsers, Firefox and Chrome lead the way: No surprises that our highest hits come from the US and UK but some weird ones in there too...Turkey? Nigeria? Time to get the site beefed up a bit more I think.
Unfortunately, I'm completely blocked from the site at work. With Websense though, it's hard to tell if the block for security is legit or just a factor of certain triggers in the program. The adult content filter isn't always accurate.
I'll buy a security cert; it won't be anything too flashy but it should get the job done at least. Strange though, since we're not taking money from anyone and I get my servers from reliable UK providers I really can't tell you what the issue would be.
People still use netscape? Seriously? Are they running Windows 98 too? More importantly, does anyone have any idea what would be causing the security errors? I've never encountered the error bfun mentioned myself.
I've had it once or twice. I think its something to do with the time since I last clicked a button on the site - it generally goes away when I try again. Also, I've only seen it happen with Firefox but never on Chrome and it's usually when I tag pictures into a post.
It should be OK. I'll take a look and see what options there are. I think there's a budget certificate out there that would be adequate for what we need here since we don't store any sensitive data such as credit cards and billing information. I'll keep everyone posted.
On another equally important note, why are 60 people lurking? So really almost 100 members have followed us here from PVC, and 2/3s of them haven't registered? Seriously, what the fuck guys? Stop being lame. I'm almost more offended by that than I would be if no one were looking at the site. I'm really tempted to make it so that people can't read the forums until they've registered. Lurkers waste bandwidth and contribute nothing. I don't care if Chairmansteve banned you or you got into fights with people. This place is meant to be a fresh start. If you can follow the rules you can come back.
You need to prescribe yourself a chill pill. Don't do the registration/login requirement, I use Google Incognito at work and it will make it a giant pain in the ass.
I'm not sure if it's a web security issue at all. It seems more like a server time error. I'll take a screen shot the next time I see it. alterego's problem might be different. I find it hard to believe that Websence could have found us so fast. Maybe they have some kind of deal with the domain providers and get alerts to new domains. My Websence filter tried to block the last forum but someone screwed up and only blocked the login page and non-forum stuff.
Looking around, I'm amazed by how many of the forums on the web are horribly designed pieces of shit. Even most of the big guy websites have terribly designed forums with ugly layouts and lots of unnecessary bling. Just take a look at Gamespot's forums if you want a good example of what we're trying to avoid here.
