System Shock 2

  1. The controls are too complex for a controller. And I'm not being a PC snob. They really are.

There's a shoot mode and a use mode, and the use mode is not controller friendly. It's all designed for a mouse. You have to be able to read emails, do research and so on.

The creators of System Shock 2 actually made Bioshock as a sort of pseudo-sequel. My guess is that they thought SS2 didn't sell well because it was too complex, so they simplified it. But I think they went overboard. Bioshock did sell pretty well though, so at least in the long run they got some compensation for their work. But SS2 is really a better game I think as they didn't compromise with it, and I like the deep space setting better than the deep sea setting.

  2. I will have to miss out then since I have no mouse on my laptop and I cant mouse and keyboard game.

Bioshock was enjoyable but after a while it get stale and too long. If SS2 is better than that it must be quite good.

  3. The repetitiveness was one of the big problems I had with Bioshock.

SS2 is very chaotic with some big twists in the plot. It's one of those games where if you go into it without spoilers, you're never quite sure what's going to happen next. It has a number of WTF moments.

  4. Is it scary or just the atmosphere that makes it eerie?

  5. It's scary. Especially when The Many start tapping into your implants and forcing you to have hallucinations, which sometimes come seemingly out of nowhere.

Also, Shodan is a sociopathic psychobitch who spends most of the game manipulating and controlling you. She's one of the nastier game villains I've encountered. And because she put implants and a killswitch in you while you were sleeping, you spend a good part of the game working for her and having to do exactly what she says. All the while she's telling you that you're a piece of garbage and that she's going to kill you when you've outlived your usefulness.

There are no good guys in this game. You're basically stuck between the psycho AI and the hive mind that's consuming the ship. The crazy thing is that The Many are actually somewhat sympathetic. A collective consciousness might have advantages over individualism. But there's really nothing redeeming about shodan. Everything about this game is just creepy and nasty. The atmosphere is very eerie too as you said.

  6. Sounds interesting. They should remake it but touch nothing but the graphics.

  7. They should fix the last parts. Definitely a drop off in quality there.

  8. Oh nice one, now we have to listen to Monkey write a huge letter on why you are wrong and how its the game to beat all games.

  9. Nah, there actually is a boss fight towards the end where they throw you in a pit with like 100 rumblers that's kind of cheap. It's instant buttrape if you don't know it's coming.

Most of the game is challenging in a good way, but that part is kind of dickish and mean. I don't even feel bad spoiling it for you. Upgrade the assault rifle and have assloads of anti-personnel rounds. Psi powers help a lot too.

  10. Armadeadn or anyone else who can't get the game to run should read this:
