Are Tablets Just a Fad? The original topic was the working conditions of mass electronic manufacturing in the third world. Talking about personal philanthropy was an attempt at changing the subject by the same person that brought up the original topic.

Re: Are Tablets Just a Fad? I wish there was a way to avoid Foxconn products. It looks like my 7" Kindle Fire isn't built by them, but they will be building a 10" version coming soon. I guessing other Chinese manufacturers aren't any better either, so it's probably futile. I think I'll still try to make at-least an attempt at avoiding their stuff. Re: Are Tablets Just a Fad? Doesn't Samsung still make a lot of their stuff in Korea? That might be a way to avoid Foxconn.
Re: Are Tablets Just a Fad? The conditions and working hours really aren't significantly different...
Re: Are Tablets Just a Fad? How about Asus? I would make price a prerequisit... but... Apple... But I'm pretty sure Asus, at least their overpriced stuff, is all made in Japan. Kinda' hate to arse myself to overpay just for...
Are Tablets Just a Fad? It wouldn't really be overpaying, it would just be priced to reality. As it stands now our prices are subsidized by slave labor camps.
Are Tablets Just a Fad? Eh, by noon tomorrow my emo phase will have lapsed and I'm going to say fuck it.
Re: Are Tablets Just a Fad? @alterego Samsung sounds like a crappy place to work in manufacturing, but nothing you posted there sounds like outright slave labor like Foxconn. Plenty of Americans work at jobs with 12 hour days and have to work holidays.
Re: Are Tablets Just a Fad? Apparently, this stuff happened in Illinois 130 years ago. China's just playing catchup.
Re: Are Tablets Just a Fad? In the first example, the guy who committed suicide by jumping off the 13th floor was working 14-15 hour days and had health issues due to having to wear the bunny suit that long. In the second link, the guy was was working "more than 12 hours per day" and had serious health issues due to exposure to chemicals. If you click on the link, it's basically just a litany of worker issues with Samsung, including high rates of cancer/leukemia. You're fooling yourself if you think the Korean semiconductor jobs are significantly different in terms of worker rights or conditions.
Re: Are Tablets Just a Fad? Asus is a Foxconn client, just like Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Dell, HP, Apple, Amazon, Nokia, Acer, Panasonic, Motorola etc. Guys: if you're into electronics, you've been buying things manufactured in these kinds of conditions. It's the same as clothing and produce. Low pay, few rights, crappy conditions.
Re: Are Tablets Just a Fad? Indeed. I find it odd some of you guys are getting so emo about it. Go turn into a hippie or something. Cuz if you eat fruits and vegetables, there's some poor mexican farmer suffering out there too.
Re: Are Tablets Just a Fad? But the higher end asus stuff I've heard was from Japan. Sony too. but that was a couple years ago.
Re: Are Tablets Just a Fad? You might be thinking of parts of Asus products. Not the whole entire product.
Re: Are Tablets Just a Fad? yep wasn't sure of that but hey! that's a start! lol doubt anybody got leukemia washing a dirty motherboard.
Re: Are Tablets Just a Fad? This is bfun's fault. I was perfectly content in ignorance. With that said, my propensity to be a cheap bastard will probably overtake my emoness on the issue.
Re: Are Tablets Just a Fad? Someone in a position to actually be heard has a chance to do a hard hitting expose on the horrendous working conditions at Foxconn, and what we get instead is a fluff piece with some douchebag talking about how much he loves Apple products and how the workers don't have it bad. Gotta love American news media which is bought and paid for by corporations. ABC is basically Disney, which is basically Apple. http://abcnews.go.com/International/trip-ifactory-nightline-unprecedented-glimpse-inside-apples-chinese/story?id=15748745#.T0UaB_WDqk9
