Fuck that fat bitch and her dumb excuse. You shouldn't be ordering delivery if you don't have tip money. She's lucky he pissed on her door instead of Rkelly her face.
How can they be paid less than minimum wage? Surely that is against the law if you have a minimum wage. I always tip in restaurants unless the food is bad or the staff annoy me but I only tip £1 or so for delivery. The guy is paid as a driver, he doesn't have much stress as all he is doing is delivering already cooked food to my door. Probably the easiest job ever.
Pretty typical example of the working class getting fucked over in the US. You don't tip, and they may not even be making minimum wage, and our crony capitalist system is fine with that. That's why stiffing the server is a shitty thing to do.
Its complicated. But basically if you work a job that generates tips you don't get a minimum wage. It is expected that your tips will exceed the minimums. If you don't make the $7 from tips you can default to the min wage but if that happened the server will probably be fired for someone with bigger boobs. Also i tip best for deliveries. Some restaurants don't even comp gas, expecting drivers to pay out of tips.
I usually leave a standard 20% as well. It's also very easy to calculate 2 bucks for every 10 dollars on the bill. Also, regarding cheap food, I happen to live close a small Korean population, a rarity in Indiana I'd think, and I love their lunch specials in the nearby Korean restaurants. For years, they had a kalbi (short ribs) lunch special for $6, which was an insanely good deal. So good.
Servers can also get screwed pretty badly if they're working in a failing restaurant where they don't get enough customers. And many, many restaurants fail, even good restaurants.
It's just how it is here and people don't complain because everyone understands the system. If you don't live here, obviously it'd be an inconvenience for you. The idea is jobs like these and other hospitality jobs require you to work for your money.. be as nice and as courteous as possible. Do everything the customer expects you to do and above and beyond. You may make a nice large tip out of it. People work these jobs because of that possibility. Some bartenders and servers that work at busy restaurants/bars make a complete killing out of this system. How come I feel that we have had a long conversation about this same topic in the old forum before?
Because we have. If I remember correctly, Monsly took a trip to the US, and he wondered why everyone looked at him like he was an asshole when he didn't tip. And I'm pretty sure we went through this whole explanation before. I also remember him saying he ordered a steak well done at a nice restaurant, and they also looked at him like he was an asshole, and he didn't know why. And I tried to explain to him that asking for steak well done basically says you think the meat is of poor quality, at least in the US. Maybe British people like well done steak, I don't know. But here it can be taken as an insult. You ask for a steak well done at Denny's or at other filthy places, not at nice restaurants.
My experience is that it actually works that way. I find restaurant service to typically be much better here than in Europe. Granted I've eaten at much fewer places abroad. I think this comes up every few months.
I like Dominos Pizza, just not the budget stuff. put mushrooms and bacon on anything and it's good xD
You wouldn't survive in this country. Your vacation days to us make it seem like you guys don't do productive work at all. Meanwhile, there's people here working off the clock. Slave to the machine. We're just a classy China.
Whaaaat? I looked up the whole tipping thing before going - I tipped pretty much all the time, though maybe not a lot on a delivered pizza we took. I don't think I'd heard of that one being one where it was expected so I probably just rounded up the cost. Seems like a stupid system to me - just pay people right in the first place then you wouldn't have that shit. I also had a £20 ribeye steak from a top butcher's in the summer. I barbecued it well done, just to spite you.
Having tips worked into your actual pay is fundamentally retarded, so much so that it hurts. The tips are meant to be an extra payment, usually given to people who deliver outstanding service. It's a bonus, an additional fee. How the hell can US restaurants get away with this shady practice? How is it not illegal? I feel so sorry for American Atheists and now waiting staff. If I ever go to America I might just tip someone out of pity. If I'm expected to pay the staff AND pay for my food I expect the food to be cheaper as a result. You guys have some fucked up shit going on for sure.
This is also another scare tactic on why tipping works. If you don't want them to do something scary to your food/drink, hair, etc, tip.
That takes the piss though, especially after paying a lot for your meal and drinks. Is it expensive for resturant meals over your end?
It entirely depends on where you go. If you go to a nice steak restaurant, your piece of steak served a la carte could be $40-$60. So you could very likely be looking at a $60-$80 bill before tax and tip for a single person. But people only go to those places on special occasions. You could get a steak with sides for $15-$20 at a normal restaurant. If you get a burger at a regular place, it could range from $8-$12 with sides included. So on average at your everyday restaurant, you're looking at a ~$15 bill after tax. Depending on the person, if you're a low tipper, you tip 10%. Normal tips are 15%. I normally tip 20%.
