I was in Chicago, and tried the deep dish pizza. So I am a fattie and can usually finish a "large" pizza in the UK. I got the "Small" deep dish pizza and had to leave 3/6 Pieces Dat Cheeze though... I also don't get why you have to tip so much in the US.. 20% u havin a laff m8
You left half a Chicago deep dish behind? Enjoy your walk of shame back home you amateur euro-fattie.
Isn't it because waiting staff in the US don't actually get paid minimum wage by their employers? They make it up by demanding it at the table as a tip? Effectively they should just add 20% to all the prices on the menu but I guess that would make it look more expensive and make it less attractive to the average punter. I usually go with 10% but only IF the waiting staff are not wankers, then they run the risk of getting noting.
It's complicated but in short yes. A waiter/waitress gets about $3/hour and the minimum wage is $7.25. If their salary + tips is not greater than $7.25 the employer is supposed to make up the difference. Why is this? I have no idea. Perhaps it's a left over relic from the war like a Sunday roast. Where it gets really sketchy is when full pay wait staff also request 15% to 20% tip or places that don't have any wait staff request tips, or when places request tips before I've received any food or service.
Over here you get wage + tips so when you tip you are in theory putting it into the pocket of the employee as an extra. I assume most waiting staff are on minimum wage which will soon be £7.20/hour which is $10.27 at the moment so with tips they probably don't do too badly compared to people just on minimum wage such as store workers. It was made illegal to use tips to make up employee wages in 2009 but I still don't like using card to tip as I have no way of knowing what the company does with it. I now only tip in cash, that way I know the person who served me is getting it.
the idea of the tip here in America is that the server should earn it with their service. if they just add it to the cost of the menu items, they already know they'll get it regardless of how bad their service is.
If you couldn't tell from our current election year... Americans are extremely stupid and sheepishly subservient to corporations. When a business openly offloads labor costs directly onto the customer, they embrace it. Some even feel they aren't doing enough for their corporate masters and will tip 25-30%. LOL Current tip is 18% btw.
That's the idea but I don't think it works like that. Studies have show that skin color and physical attractiveness can be as much a factor for tipping as quality of service and wait staff that get bad tips usually wont have any feedback as to what they did wrong. Also it's odd that a $20 steak dinner gets twice the tip money over $10 pancakes. The service is the same but one gets 50% less tip money.
I forgot to take pics. I guess I could take pictures of the reubens and corned beef hash I'm going to make out of the leftovers. It came out better in the Dutch oven than in a crock pot. Also, if you put the stove to low, you don't really have to watch it any more closely than you would a crock pot.
Boston had some nice pizza.. but all in my visit to the US everything was too much.. this was a good thing with booze, since you folks don't measure out exact MLs of spirits. I had the nicest old fashion ever whilst staying in the below swish hotel.
Smoked a turkey today. Got up at 7:00 AM to prep. Planned for it to take the whole day and then suddenly it was done at noon. Little bit of a time over estimate on my part. Might have cooked it too hot but I had problems regulating the temperature because it's snowing again. Came out pretty good though. I ate a leg and thigh for lunch and the rest will be dinner.
After a particularly bad bout of hotel room feasting over the weekend, I've gone vegan. I actually found 2 (and only 2) tasty substitutes in that time. Field Roast Mexican Chipotle 'sausage' - It doesn't have the consistency of meat. But it's so spicy that it's edible and tastes good on it's own. A corporation has finally assembly lined the 'throw hot sauce on it until it's good' concept for mass wholesale. Lightlife Fakin Bacon - Similarly, this looks and tastes nothing like bacon. But it decent on its own. It's also the only vegan product I've come across that didn't try to sell a lie and openly declared itself a fake product. You unhealthy sons of bitches could learn something from me.
