The Great US vs UK Food Debate

Discussion in 'Everything Else' started by supersonic, Jan 30, 2011.

  1. And yet you have yet to post any tasty food yourself. Guess its a stalemate of each selves tastes then, hmm?

  2. At least I posted food. You guys haven't posted anything. Probably because it all looks like something the cat puked up.

  3. I guess I'll have to do it for you...

    YUM!

  4. Wasn't that the one they made better by frying it and adding cheese? Well, werm're halfway there with our fried mars bars and creme eggs. Just need the cheese

  5. Have you had fried ice cream? Way better than a fried mars bar.

    @Phisix

Get back to me when you've actually eaten a Chimichanga. Or even a regular burrito for that matter.

  6. We don't fry our mar bars, we use batter. Which is a totally different mix. Do you actually fry Icecream?

You are contradicting yourself now. You have been saying all along that our food looks disgusting, and I have been saying try it which you keep avoiding, but then you try and hit back by saying the same exact thing to me. This will keep going back and forth because we have not tried each others food.

  7. You coat the ice cream in corn flakes and fry it so fast that the ice cream inside is still cold. It's hot and crispy on the outside and cold on the inside.

I don't know why you think burritos looks disgusting. They look and taste awesome to me. I've never met someone who didn't like burritos. You'd be the first.

You guys really don't have mexican food or tex-mex over there? Wow. I don't think I could survive in your country.

  8. That actually tastes nice. I don't know about the other guys, but I live in a small town, so we don't that great of restaurants and food places down here, but the bigger places like London certainly will. Think we have a Mexican in town though, but I have never tried them.

That said, I am a fussy eater when it comes to certain things, but if something looks disgusting to me and it is new, most of the time I won't like the look of it. Then again I am not as fussy as I used to be and I have tried new things over the years to make up for it.

  9. You do know that what Americans call pudding is actually custard right?

    http://www.foodtimeline.org/foodpuddings.html

Australians have a mix of American/Mexican and English food influences as well as the obvious Italian, Asian and French.

Both British and American food can be unhealthy, but Americans generally take it way too far. So British food wins on the health argument.

While American food generally has more taste, British food caters to more mature taste buds. That said, neither specialise all that well in eloquent cuisine.

America get good props for adapting upon already proven combinations from other cultures. The Britts just do their own thing, sometimes they do okay stuff, other times it seems a bit strange and only seems to fill a niche.

As far as overall best country for food: Italy, hands down.

  10. Gandhi went on a hungry strike after a bowl of mushy peas.

  11. You ever tried them? I guess not since it is healthy. Anyway, I used to think mushy peas looked disgusting, but they are actually rather tasty.

    Taste> Look

  12. @Phisix
What's healthy about mashed up canned peas? Fresh vegetables are healthy.

    @supersonic

In WW2, the Japanese commited Seppuku not because it was the honorable thing to do, but because they didn't want to get captured by the British and have to eat pie and mash.

  13. That only works if you're familiar and grew up with the food. You ain't gonna get any newcomers though.

  14. Who said anything about tinned peas. You can obviously make your own from fresh ones. All the more nicer too. Home-made things are delicious. Just like my Steak mince cottage pie loaded with cheese. :D

  15. True actually, which is why I was put off by some food back when I was growing up. Still, both sides of this discussion have horrible looking food, so it is a moot point to be honest unless we just try these foods.

Lol, resorting to cheap insults now are we. First contradicting yourself, and now this. This just gets better and better.

You ever tried Pie and mash potato with gravy? Noo, so we are back to square one again. Its is rather nice, especially steak pie. Steak is such a lush meat.

Let me ask you this, do you like any form of meat pie? Also, do you like mash potato? And finally, do you like gravy. Answer truthfully and I will enlighten something to you.

  16. It looks nearly identical to the slop they serve at Boston Market or in a school cafeteria.

I got sick after eating a chicken pot pie once. Now I generally try to avoid pies full of mystery meat.

  17. You ever learn the difference between home-cooked: cooking something yourself, and getting it from some crappy place? yeah, it will taste and look better. Maybe you should go and buy yourself your favourite pie and meat filling, mash the potatoes the way you like and then use the tastiest gravy you like and portray the meal the way you like. You will then love it. trust.

Also, do you Americans have any real tasty looking meals that us English could try? It seems you guys have some tasty meals we might be missing out on.

That is like me saying: " I will avoid other flavours of crisps because I hate one flavour". Crisps being chips or whatever you call them in your country.

  18. Mexican food is actually really easy to prepare. I just don't know that you guys have access to tortillas or the sauces or seasonings you would need.

  19. Tesco's actually have all those needed I think. I do remember seeing a section or sections for that in that Supermarket. I may have to try it sometime. Any ideas on combinations?

  20. If you have a grill you can do fajitas. I usually use steak or shrimp when I do fajitas. Tacos, burritos, and quesadillas are easy, and can be done with just a frying pan. If you want to mix things up try fish tacos. Enchiladas are good if you don't mind baking. You'll be out of luck on Chimichangas unless you have a deep frier.

If you have these ingredients you can make most mexican recipes:

tortillas, flour or corn depending on what you're making
    Mexican cheese blend
    tomatoes
    avocados
    lettuce
    onions
    bell peppers
    sour cream
    refried beans
salsa - you can make your own if you're feeling adventurous
    seasonings, sauces, marinades (fajitas)
