Thread Derailing Douchebags argue about OS 10!

Discussion in 'monkeyCage' started by alterego, Jul 13, 2012.

  1. I think that's basically it, and engenious of you to think of it that way. It's not the 10th version of OS X, it's the 10th version of Apple OS'. Argument over.

  2. OS X 10.0 is the first release of Apple's second Mac operating system. OS X 10.1 is typically considered to be the proper Version 1, as 10.0 was barely more usable than the beta.

Apple's first Mac operating system was retired at Version 9.2.2

  3. What does any of this have to do with the original argument?

OS X is based on the same OS that it was with 10.0.
Each new revision has a code name.
Code names for revisions are confusing to customers apparently.
Everyone does this, but only Apple make it not confusing, thus the distinct lack of confusion in this thread (???).

    Am I following?

  4. This is like the lamest thread ever. Could you guys be bigger sperglords?

  5. Surely mac os has more than two versions

  6. What's a Sperglord? Is that a new OS, or just a revision? If the OS is called 5 cocks, 1 hole, does that make the revision before Sperglord 4 cocks, 1 hole, or does Sperglord add an extra hole with no supplementing cocks?

  7. Aren't Apple running out of decent cats to name their OS after? Technically, a mountiain lion is a bit of a step down from a regular lion.

How far will they go, OS X Wet Pussy?

  8. OS X Monorail Cat

  9. Android has more than one numbered version, yes? 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 so far. Those numbered revisions get dessert names. But the dot releases also get dessert names, like 2.2, 2.3, and 4.1. Which in turn means that every time there's a rumored new "dessert" release coming up, it isn't always clear whether it's going to be a numbered release or simply a dot release. Plenty of people in the tech media thought that "Jellybean" represented 5.0 Android (Google "Jellybean 5.0" and see what you get), but instead it turned out to be 4.1 Android.

And Grim is the one that brought up OS X and claimed it was "the same" as Android.

But, of course, there are no cat names prior to OS X 10.0, and the cat names themselves always occur in the same way: when the .x changes. And, again, it's obvious that's not the case with Android. That was the original point made at the beginning of the thread. It's just a minor observation, really, not a flame war comment. It's sort of funny that the people who talk about rape and Stockholm Syndrome are the ones that become upset about something like that.

  10. "Operating system" isn't the same thing as "version". Are Chrome and Android considered to be the same operating system?

  11. So Apple used the same Mac Os for 20 odd years?

  12. Apple used an OS that wasn't based on Unix prior to OS X. That OS had nine different numbered versions. OS X represents a change to a different OS that is based on Unix.

  13. but all the versions have different numbers. so os x is the 10th version?

  14. It's a different OS. Is there an OS X Version 9.0? If not, then OS X Version 10.0 is not the tenth version of OS X. Apple was trying to give people a B-I-G hint that 'X' represented a change to a new OS based on NeXTStep and Unix, but apparently that's way over some people's heads.

  15. So mac os 9 is the first version?

  16. Any OS that has a "1.0" in it is the first version. The actual name of the OS is for suckers. For example, Windows 8 is the successor to Mac OS System 7 because 8 always follows 7. That's all the proof you need!

  17. so OS X is version 10?

  18. No, because X doesn't match 10.

You're forgetting your own breakthrough discovery: that you can ignore the name of the OS as long as the numbers match or are in sequence. Different code? Ignore it. Can't run the same applications natively? Ignore it. Different kernel? Ignore it. Just focus on the numbers and all the rest of the unpleasant things that don't match just fade away into a happy rainbow of near complete ignorance (or bad taste in humor).

  19. But os x has 10.0 in it.
