What Games Are You Playing?

  1. I've been playing Vice City 10th Anniversary Edition recently. The controls are almost unchanged from GTA3 which is a bit of a disappointment but I guess there's not a lot they can do with touchscreen vs buttons. At least I'm used to them now after playing GTA3 for ages. Apart from the controls the game is as good as ever, better even. With upgraded textures and resolutions plus an increased draw distance it's still a little hard to believe they got this onto a phone. I am playing it on an iPhone 4S though, the iPad1 version is, well, it suffers from a terrible framerate that renders it almost unplayable. But that's to be expected with these tablets. You get one that's only a couple of years old and you can't play the latest games.

If like me you loved the PS2 GTAs this is definitely worth a buy. The controls are arse like I said but you can overcome that. The warm lazy hazy setting is a vibrant as ever and the soundtrack still remains one of the best in game history in my opinion.

If you love GTA you'll probably already have this. If you don't you might want to give it a miss as the controls will put quite a few people off.

Here's the trailer to get the nostalgia juices flowing.

  2. I found the controls for Vice City to work reasonably well most of the time, similar to Max Payne. There are a few missions here and there where they become frustrating, such as "All Hands on Deck", or some situations where timed missions should probably have been lengthened a bit due to the lower precision.

  3. I just managed the one where you have to blow up the building using the rc copter first time. I was expecting to have to retry a few times.

  4. I skipped that one after 6-7 tries, but the issue was more with the RC copter flying too slowly for the time limit, not the controls. Rockstar has made some updates since the iOS launch, so I should try it again and see if there's anything new.

  5. One of the captors may indeed be a toilet slaver. He's a pretty sick and evil bastard.

There is an obvious reference to Kill Bill when you are introduced to him.

  6. I was going to mention him. It was obviously implied that he did something to Keith but it never really said what it was.

  7. I've been neglecting FarCry3 of late. But I played it the other day and met this buck character. He's definitely interesting.

  8. I'm actually really enjoying Far Cry 3 now that I've gotten further into it. It is indeed a really good open world game. I'm enjoying the hunting and crafting more than I thought I would. I think they've done a good job of capturing the feel of the original Far Cry in a lot of respects, minus the Island of Dr Moreau bullshit with the trigens. It's nothing like FC2, and it's actually a pretty good game from what I've seen. I can't really comment too much on the story, as I haven't finished the game. The graphics are some of the most impressive I've seen, and that's only running it on med-high settings at 1920x1080. I'm sure this game would be absolutely stunning on ultra. It definitely gives Crysis and Crysis 2 a run for their money.

Unless there's some big change that ruins the gameplay experience, I'd say FC3 is a solid 8/10 IMO.

  9. There is no story. You have no friends. Nobody to save. You must fix your dislocated fingers to heal your gun wounds. Your magical tattoos power you up.

  10. I'll wait for your reassessment after you start tripping balls in knife fights, but I'd give it an 8/10 as well.

  11. What I think you guys might be forgetting (or perhaps you never played it all the way through) is that the original Far Cry's story went totally off the rails in the second half, with James Bond style supervillainy, a secret volcano base, people being turned into mutants, a nuke going off, and an absurd twist that reveals the real bad guy. Far Cry had one of the most absurd and bizarre stories I've seen in a game other than the original Deus Ex.

  12. I was actually a little disappointed with Farcry 3 in one respect. The tropical island setting certainly harkens back to the original which I did play on the PC. The disappointment came from only being able to kill pirates, plus a little bit of wildlife. I wanted to see some mutant scumbags to liven the place up a bit. I've really enjoyed the last two sessions of FC3 I played. The trouble is I seem to always have $4000 (my current max) and there's fuck all to spend it on. I've got the guns I want, although I did just notice the signature weapons list, I bought the custom Vector. I've also seen a mental sniper on youtube videos that can take out the juggernogs in one headshot, I want that gun. It's a very good game to be sure but I miss the map mechanic from FC2, being able to drive and look at the map was unique and fun since you couldn't keep your eyes on the road while doing so. But for all its good points FC3 is very repetitive. I find the game plays like this.

    Go here, kill these pirates.
    Go here, kill these pirates.
Go here, use a shit weapon to kill an animal.
    Go here, kill these pirates.

I'm looking forward to FC4 because hopefully they'll take what made this game great and improve on it. Like maybe having more perks, or less useless ones, and more variety on how you unlock the perks. The perk system just seems rather tacked on with little thought compared to the rest of the game. I like games where choosing your perks is a decision because you can't have them all, with this game it's just a linear path until you've unlocked them all. Kind of like the crystarium on FFXIII.

I've still not killed Vaas and made it to the second island yet but if I had to give a rating so far I'd say it's around 7/10. It's good, but there's definitely room for improvement.

  13. Plague inc

It took three tries but I finally destroyed mankind.

  14. You can take those guys out with any sniper rifle from behind and slightly above, as the top back quarter of their head is exposed. You just need to be at a closer range with some of the earlier models.

  15. Max Payne 3

Pretty good game so far. Nice story.

  16. I really wanted that game but for some reason let it pass me by. I'll have to pick it up soon. All the strange lens effects ate a little off putting though. I guess they're meant to represent Payne's drug addled mindset.

  17. I've been playing tons of Mass Effect 3 multiplayer lately. I downloaded the free DLC, and some of new characters are awesome. Also, although it's a bit of a joke character, the Volus characters are pretty amusing to use. He looks hilarious being a little butterball rolling around, and I heal other players while setting traps. The recon mine is pretty brutal. I managed to finish in first place a few times from using that mine as a Volus. The N7 characters are kinda badass as well. The Infiltrator and Adept are very nice.

Also, I bought the Leviathan DLC. It's not the greatest in terms of gameplay, but it was well worth it for me for the backstory and conclusion. Something very important is revealed at the end. I'd avoid spoilers because it's not nearly as powerful unless you play through it with the build up.

  18. Dishonored

I really like the steampunk setting. The gameplay seems overly simplistic, and the AI is really dumb, making the stealth elements seem a bit silly. It reminds me of Bioshock with its cool setting but tedious gameplay.

  19. I liked the Steam punk setting as well. I suppose that and the art style is a big part of whether someone will like the game or not. As far as being too simplistic, there are multiple complex ways to use your powers which can be challenging. I did things the easy way and got all the crossbow upgrades. That and sneak is a simple but deadly combo.

  20. I read a review of Far Cry 3 where the guy said that he had finished Dishonored entirely in the non-kill stealth mode, but had found it difficult to capture many pirate outposts in FC3 entirely with stealth. To me, that meant Dishonored must have had significantly easier AI.
