I grabbed that one too but was embarrassed to say so. I played about 15 minutes of it. It's not too bad. The voice acting could be better.
Those telltale guys need to invest in a better engine. It's not 2004 guys. And LOL. bfun and his anime waifu. He's not refunding that, it's all lies.
I had no idea what it was. I read one review that said the game started after 10 minutes of dialog. I think that was a lie.
I bought Shadow of Mordor and AC Unity a few months back. Played SoM for about 10 hours then put it down. Great graphics, cool killing animations, tedious as fuck combat. And the tedious combat is like every couple of minutes. Don't recommend. I installed Unity, then uninstalled it to make room for Elder Scrolls Online and I still haven't reinstalled it to give it a try. One day I will. Oh yeah, and ESO sucks, as predicted.
I'm sorry you have shitty taste in games. Shadow of Mordor has the best combat of any action RPG I've played.
I just got really tired of having to bat enemies away to give me enough time to get a finishing execution on people. If I recall my options were either that or hit each enemy 50,000 times to kill them. I'm sure the combat improves over time but it was just too shit from the start. It's like the combat in Assassin's Creed, only it's like all the enemies are wearing tanks as armour. Also those big animals you can ride that love to just fuck your shit up, screw those things. Just so we're clear, I never said the combat was bad, just that I found it to be tedious and the game didn't hold my interest for more than a few days.
I really, really enjoyed the combat in Shadows of Mordor. How did you get on with the batman games, arma? It reminded me of those a lot. Shame it didn't click for you.
The combat is kind of tough in the beginning, and it's better to use stealth in the early parts of the game. You have to unlock some abilities and get good at quickly finishing enemies. Eventually you become an absolute monster who can slaughter hordes of enemies quickly and easily. It sounds like he just didn't give it a chance. The combat in Shadow of Mordor was so good that it has ruined me for other action RPGs. I don't understand why they can't all have deep, satifsying combat like SoM.
Yeah, it was a great system that really lent itself to different approaches and had a real fluidity. I had some amazing emergent gaming moments; sneaking into camps going wrong, leading to chaotic battles and frantic escapes. Great stuff. Really need to go back to it; had a real bastard Orc warlord on my go. That fucker had a real nasty mix of special abilities and constantly messed with me.
I played Arkham Asylum and the combat in that was pretty good. The problem with SoM was that the enemies take so many hits the only viable option was to get execution moves on. But the execution moves are so long in SoM and they have to be completed for the move to actually kill them, that it gives their buddies time to strike at me, which I have to counter, freeing up the guy I was in the process of killing. Hence I felt I was having to bat them away to give me enough time to get the execution move finished. Monkey could very well be right, maybe I was just doing it wrong and I suck at the combat. I don't think so though. Either way I always planned to go back eventually see if the combat improves as I unlock more skills. >It sounds like he just didn't give it a chance. Said the guy who once stated I played it for 4 or 5 days before getting bored with it, that's the same chance I gave Witcher 2 before dismissing it forever. You guys talking about the combat being deep and fluid makes me wonder what I missed out on by getting bored early on in the game. To me the combat was just a tedious copy of the Assassin's Creed/Batman combat, sounds like it picks up at some point and gets good. I'll report my findings when I go back to it.
You unlock crowd control abilities, but you don't get them immediately. You also eventually gain the ability to mind control orcs and have them fight for you, which helps a lot with the mobs. Later in the game the combat feels more like you're in the middle of a battle rather than all of the enemies just swarming you. I really loved the head detonation ability. Watching orc heads explode and surrounding orcs panic and run never gets old. You get your ass kicked in the beginning of Shadow of Mordor, but by the end you are the ass kicker. I really liked that about it, and especially loved the nemesis system, but different strokes for different folks I guess. I felt like Shadow of Mordor is what Assassin's Creed keeps trying and failing to be. AC needs to drop the cheesy and heavy handed storytelling and boring open world elements and focus more on combat and actual assassinations. If it did that it could be as good as SoM. But there's really no point in forcing yourself to play a game you don't find fun, because fun is the whole point of games. People have different tastes in games and that's fine. A lot of people love the Witcher games for instance, but I can't get past the clunky combat and unintuitve interface, and have never been able to have fun with them. I actually just got a refund on the Witcher 3 because I wasn't enjoying it. It might be a 10/10 for other people, but something about it just wasn't clicking for me.
