I'm curious what you think of it. I thought it was a shitty Metal Gear/Splinter Cell clone with zombies.
I also thought it had so many seemingly endless, boring cutscenes that it may as well be a movie. It's exactly the kind of game Maddox is complaining about here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Utk2k8Z4bJE
The best page in the universe. Guy has one of the most popular sites on the internet that's been around for like 15 years. Have you been living under a rock? How have you never heard of Maddox? We've even talked about his opinion pieces on PVC quite a few times. Dude is even a best selling author and semi-successful stand up comedian. http://maddox.xmission.com/
His argument is a fail. He is basically describing an iOS/Android morning commute gamer. Video games vary too widely to make stupid statements like that. Pick up GTA or a hack'n'slasher and the story is minimalist to get you into the game. But if you're going to pick up a story driven game, STFU and watch the cutscenes. Immersive (movie-style) gaming has been in since Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII showed up on PS1.
I'm fine with heavy story telling if it's interactive in some way. Something like Fallout, Mass Effect, or Deus Ex where your choices impact the story, so the story is basically another aspect of the gameplay. Or take Half-life 1/2 for instance where the story is told entirely through the gameplay with no cutscenes. Non-interactive cutscenes that just have you sitting and watching forever like in Metal Gear and The Last of Us are lame. You may as well just be watching a movie. And actually movie type gaming didn't originate on consoles. It started on the PC in the early 90s with CD based FMV games like Night Trap, 7th Guest, and Myst. Except PC developers quickly realized that forcing players to sit through endless unskippable boring ass cutscenes and "games" with very low interactivity were kind of lame. The result was games like Half-Life, Deus Ex, Fallout, and System Shock 2 in the late 90s where the stories are told all or mostly through the gameplay, and in some cases you can make choices that impact the story. Console developers got on board with this heavy handed cutscene fad much later, but some of them never seemed to move on from it. Playstation exclusives are particularly bad. The Japs really love cutscenes. Most of them may as well be movies. Cases in point: Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Heavy Rain, The Last of Us, Uncharted. Yet another area where console peasants are lagging decades behind the master race. Heavy handed non-interactive unskippable cutscenes are so 1992. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_motion_video
But that is exactly what appeals to me about it, the entertainment value is a slickdeal. You are getting a 60 hour interactive story for roughly $1/hour. In comparison, a movie is a ripoff at $6/hour. I also dispute Maddox's claims on quality. In general, I find video games are better at storytelling than movies. Plus I always had CounterStrike as my dependable no-bullshit go to game.
Night Trap was originally a console game. Comparing FMV games with modern narrative led games is pretty tenuous. Games always often told stories but now thy can do it better. That's not bad.
I got the current Humble Bundle with SpinTires Russian Off-Road Cargo Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator. Totally Worth It. Now I can play out my fantasy of getting stuck in the mud somewhere in Russia. Or if I feel like it I can also get stuck in traffic somewhere in Germany.
Picked up Wasteland 2: Director's Cut on the PS4. Really enjoying it. It's a squad based western strategy RPG in a Fallout-esque setting (though the game series does pre-date fallout). Reminds me a bit of the old TSR RPGs in a way.
Got another Humble Bundle full of games I may never play.
