What Games Have You Bought Recently?

  1. Are you comparing English dubbing for the Nier: Automata FMVs to the English native language facial animation of Mass Effect Andromeda? Not quite the same thing. I'd be curious to see if you can find a review of Nier: Automata in which the animation is mentioned and was viewed negatively. It's the best animation work Platinum has done so far, and they have a fairly strong reputation in that area..

  2. That's probably what happened. Obviously, the Frostbite engine can handle the animations just fine. Either the person in charge of the facial expressions didn't have enough time or didn't know what they were doing. I was set to pre-order but now I'm going to wait. Maybe there will be a 3rd party mod in a few years that will fix everything.

  3. It's outrageous people are actually trying to blame this on Frostbite. I've seen a few people try to pull that nonsense. Also, the Bioware apologists are pretty obnoxious, implying you're not a true ME fan if you don't blindly accept whatever they shovel in front of you if it has "Mass Effect" stamped on it.

  4. This guy has done some of the mostly reliable and useful reviews prior to the release of games I'm unsure about. He also actually pays attention to audio quality, which is something I greatly appreciate. He only reviews games after he has played them thoroughly, something I can confirm to be true after playing through lengthy adventure games and RPGs he reviewed.

I've been awaiting this upload for Andromeda, and it's pretty close to what I expected. More of a rent or wait for a sale type of game currently, although online co-op seemed to have a lot of potential if they can clean up technical issues.

I guess the party is over for Q1's hot streak. I got Yakuza 0, Hitman Steelbook, Nioh, Horizon, Zelda, Nier...and Bioware had to screw the pooch.

My copy already shipped before I saw all but one of these reviews, so I guess I'm getting it tomorrow in the mail regardless. I really enjoyed ME3's co-op; maybe that mode will keep it from being a total disaster.

  7. I bought it about a year ago but I finally decided to play Wolfenstein The New Order. I don't think I was in the mood for it though as after about 30 minutes I turned it off. Seemed good from what I played and I'll definitely pick it up again later this week. Not sure about that weird lean mechanic though...

  8. The weak aspects of ME: Andromeda are shockingly bad. It's bizarre because some elements in the game actually look OK on the Pro. Resolution isn't bad at all although somewhat framey, but some of the character models look like they were designed a day or two before it shipped. I usually don't get too upset about pop-in, but a group of 2 or 3 characters can just appear out of nowhere on the ship. There is also some dialogue that must have been outsourced to Troma. The combat is OK, I guess. My initial impressions are consistent with the 6 to 7 out of 10 range it's getting in reviews. How did Team Ninja, Guerrilla Games, and Platinum all try somewhat risky departures from their previous games and all hit home runs but a beloved, established franchise like Mass Effect ends up being a mess?

  9. ME:A looks like a hot mess. I'll wait until it gets really cheap.

  10. Couple of games

The Crew - not that bad as you could think after playing the demo. The graphics sucks balls, the driving model is too simplified, yet, driving at full moon trough the US can just be fun. Played for two or three months, got like 100 hours, completed the main quest and I give it solid 8 of 10. I wish they have a sequel taking place in Europe.

Horizon Zero Dawn - bought, played once or twice and can't make myself go back there.

Zelda, Breath of Wild - bought it for WiiU and I am impressed. Wasn't even sure our WiiU works or not as it wasn't used for couple of months but yes, it works. The game is absolutely amazing, with every single suspicious spot in sight rewarding you somehow for getting there. The first open world game where the world is not there just to fill the empty space between locations, not the world that lives but just - the world that rewards your effort.

Inside - I like it much better than Limbo, it just feel more diverse, with the only exception of unexpected ending. Still, worth every penny.

  11. Been playing Breath of Wild on Wii U as well. It would have been nice if they would have used the controller screen for maps or inventory. It seems like such an obviously useful feature that I wonder if they removed it so it didn't seem better than the Switch version. Aside from that, I like it. My only complaint is just a personal pet-peeve. I hate it when games use weapon durability stats. Breath of Wild is worse than most with many weapons not lasting past a single battle. It makes equipment management kind of tedious.

  12. Nier: Automata has apparently sold over 200K copies in under 2 weeks on Steam. Not bad for a port of a Japanese PS4 game at full price.

    http://gamingbolt.com/nier-automata-sales-hit-200000-on-pc-in-less-than-two-weeks

It's Square Enix's biggest hit on Steam ever in terms of revenue. This could lead to more from Square Enix in the future. I've played through the PS4 version and will pick up the PC version later in a Steam sale.

  13. Mass Effect: Andromeda and Darksiders 2 PS4.

  14. Andromeda isn't bad but it's not what it should have been. That said I haven't finished it yet been playing Darksiders 2 instead.

  15. I got the first chapter from the Batman Telltale series but I haven't played anything in the last 6 weeks.

  16. A couple of months ago I bought Eve Valkyrie for £64.99 and played 10 minutes of it before getting sick. Haven't touched it since. I got a Switch with Zelda so that's been taking up my time in between bouts of rampant Mortal Kombat X and Rocket League play. I plan on getting Farpoint with the Aim controller.

  17. I bought these two recently:

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds - awesome game, I used to play one of those Battle Royale mods for Arma 2 and I've looked at buying H1Z1 before, but never got around to it. This game seemed to still be popular 2 months after release on Twitch streams, so I figured worth a shot. So far I'm having a blast with it.

Rust - one of my friends convinced me to buy this. We play as a group of 5 people like 2 or 3 times a week and it's super entertaining so far. I haven't played one of these "crafting" games, I only tried Ark Survival Evolved and 7 Days to Die briefly once before I got a Steam refund on them, but with this one I'm just having a good time so far. I managed to get SLI running on it too, so performance is pretty good. I get close to 90-100fps at 1440p with near highest settings (980 Ti SLI).

  18. I picked up Diablo III and am playing it on Pro, which has an outstanding implementation of dynamic resolution scaling up to 2160p. I expected frequent stuttering given it can move between 1080p and 2160p, 4x more pixels, but it's a surprisingly smooth 60 fps the vast majority of the time. I suppose the developer in this particular example being among the best regarding ensuring a smooth gaming experience helps quite a bit. I never got around to playing this on PC or console, but it's been enjoyable so far. Some of the dialogue is a bit stilted and corny, but it's obviously great with dungeons and loot, the reasons to play a game like this. I'm a bit surprised Diablo III and The Division's Pro updates didn't get more attention. After the very top tier Pro implementations, such as Horizon and Ratchet, these games are right after them and look terrific on Pro.

BTW, I got $40 for signing up for an Amazon credit card; the game was $36. Paid nothing for it.

  19. I bought Rime for PS4. I was a bit disappointed to learn the Pro version only runs at 1080p without HDR and an unsteady frame rate, but I can't deny it is still an extremely colorful and aesthetically pleasing game with superb music. The difficulty seems rather easy, but there is also some appeal of being an enjoyable and beautiful low pressure adventure experience situated somewhere between Journey and Team ICO games. My experience has been mostly positive so far.
