What to look for in an Android Phone?

  1. I've had a problem with my Nexus recently where I can't make or receive calls until I reboot. It wouldn't be a big deal except for the fact that I miss some inbound calls before I realize it has happened. I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software issue.

  2. That'll all be unveiled on Monday, Oct. 28th. The event is expected to unveil the new LG Nexus device, a Samsung 10" Nexus tablet, while google unveils android 4.2 which should be on both devices.

  3. Here's a larger photo of the carphone warehouse product page.

Meanwhile, back in July, someone posted a screenshot of google now in a jelly bean custom rom. Poor form, carphone warehouse. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29316521&postcount=416

  4. High end Android phones seem to have gone to the sub £400 recently and it would seem the N4 is no exception. £500 seemed to be the price point for the higher end stuff until recently but now you can get the One X, SIII and N4 for around £380-£390 which isn't bad at all if you ask me.

The iPhone is still £529 so miles ahead in terms of price, perhaps Apple will be forced to drop the price to try to be a bit more competitive?

Have to wait and see what the Lumia 920 and HTC 8X sell for to see if it is just Apple who are still £400+ in a few weeks.

  5. I went back to the dark side. I just ordered a black iPhone 5. Sorry guys, but I just couldn't find any Android phones I liked as much, and I haven't been as impressed with my wife's Galaxy S3 as I thought I'd be. The software on it is pretty flaky and clunky. This is two mornings in a row now where her alarm didn't go off and she ended up being late because her phone flaked out. And the ROMs for it don't seem to be materializing the way I thought they would. It also has some weird (apparently known) issue where drag and drop in Windows doesn't work, which defeats one of the main reasons for going with Android. I'll just jailbreak the 5 when I get it so I can have the best of both worlds. I am glad that with the 5 Apple finally understands that I'm a big man and I need a big screen. That had been one of the main things that drew me away from the iPhone in the first place.

Edit: just got a text saying it's ready to ship. Glad I ordered online instead of dicking around trying to get one in a store.

  6. Does she have a process killer running? It is probably ending the alarm process as it sees it as idle, this is very common.

  7. That was my first thought, but no. She doesn't have advanced task killer or anything similar running.

  8. I'm thinking of jumping back to Android with the Galaxy Note2. Not sure yet, I really like how stable the iPhone4s is, but drag and drop is killing me. I load files onto my phones using the skydrive app.

  9. Make sure drag and drop even works on the Galaxy Note 2 before you take the plunge. I was shocked to find out that it's not working on the S3. You can use MTP, but it always flakes out and crashes before it finishes transferring a file. Kind of defeats one of the main purposes of going with Android.

I was torn between the iPhone 5 and the S3 and that weird issue was one of the big things that settled it for me. If I can't drag and drop, what's the point? I might as well be using iTunes, and Samsung Kies is a massive shitpile that doesn't even work most of the time.

Also, my old Captivate keeps doing the sleep of death thing lately and it's driving me crazy. I'll be at work and people will be trying to call, text, or email me, and I just won't get them because my phone randomly flaked out and shut down, despite having a full battery. Sometimes it even does the sleep of death on the charger. I'm getting tired of doing battery and sim pulls. I just want something stable, and it was long past time for me to get a new phone.

  10. I'm grabbing the Note 2 upon ATT release on Nov. 9th. Porting out of Sprint right when that happens. Being on Sprint for a decade and seeing how shitty things have been, I feel bad for all of the people jumping ship from other carriers to be on Sprint for unlimited data thinking the grass is greener.

I've been using MTP on my Galaxy S II for about 6-7 months now with no issue. Being rooted, I can swap between MTP and USB mass storage mode when I need to, but I prefer MTP.

Have you tried any other apps? For example, AirDroid can transfer data via wifi.

Sometimes I just use solid explorer to transfer stuff via ftp. I wish I had an answer to the alarm clock and MTP issues, but I haven't had those issues to troubleshoot. :(

  11. That was the other thing that compelled me to upgrade: my grandfathered unlimited data was able to be upgraded to 4G LTE. I didn't think that was possible, but the AT&T rep assured me it was, and sure enough, grandfathered unlimited 4G LTE for $30/month was an option for data for me on the order page.

Edit: yes, I've tried Airdroid, but it's slow, especially when transferring large files like movies.

Also, everyone rips on AT&T, but they're not a bad carrier. I've never had any problems with them. The coverage in South Florida is great, and they have good customer service in my experience. I guess it's because they're big and popular, and everyone hates on things that are popular?

  12. I don't blame you. Sprint sucks, and as the hurricane taught me, completely useless when I most need it. Verizon users were able to place calls, and my Sprint phone would either "Call Failed" or connect to VZ Wireless Operator who would place a call if I put it on a CC.

The only reason I stick it out is for $50/mo unlimited everything, and yearly upgrades. But I'm seriously considering jumping to VZ because I don't use anywhere near unlimited anything.

  13. Sprint and T-Mobile are both pretty bad. T-Mobile doesn't even want to be in this country, and seems to be trying their hardest to dump their American branch somehow. Sprint is constantly teetering on the verge of bankruptcy, and I'm amazed they haven't been bought by Verizon. Both have horrible network coverage.

You pay more for Verizon and AT&T but that's because their networks generally work when you need them to.

I guess you don't normally get hurricanes in the Northeast though, so you haven't seen what cell carriers are like when the shit hits the fan before now.

  14. No kidding. I keep saying wtf everytime I see an article about them investing in something. Where the hell did they get the money for the iphone or LTE buildout? Their profits are non-existant.

I think alot of people complain about ATT because they don't know better. If they actually experienced Sprint or T-Mobile outside of their home area, they'd understand. Verizon used to be pretty good with the crowd as far as reputation, but now, people are hating on them worse than ATT. Their network is no joke though, and they know it. You can't beat them in pure coverage, especially in LTE.

The lesson is, you get what you pay for.

  15. Why wouldn't the S3 have drag and drop? Isn't that standard feature when you put it into USB mode? The other knock I have against the iPhone5 is I have slowly collected enough cables to power the thing at home, work, car, and keep a spare with my laptop. Now I have to start over because they change the fucking port.

  16. I don't know, the new connector is kind of a godsend for me. I can't believe it's taken someone this long to come out with a USB connector that's not directional. Regardless of which way you plug it in, it works. On any type of USB connection I often find myself starting to plug it in wrong, finding it won't go, and then having to look at both the cable and the port to get it right. It sucks that old accessories will need adapters, but Thunder is a much nicer connector type.

  17. Ha! That happens to me everyday. But it takes <1 sec to flip it around. It's a slick looking upgrade too, just annoying since I just bought into Apple's proprietary crap last year.

  18. cmdr wasn't saying it doesnt have drag and drop. he was saying his lady's phone had issues with usb mass storage and mtp modes.

It's not a norm, but it does happen. For example, my friend has a galaxy nexus and his phone originally worked fine in mtp on his pc. then after a few weeks, it wouldn't transfer anything anymore. Then he came to visit me and I connected it to my pc and it worked perfectly fine. I even tested a 2GB file to test.

  19. Iffy USB cable perhaps?

  20. I actually tried three different usb cables and three different computers. Definitely something with the phone itself.
