What TV Shows Are You Watching?

  1. Having no Ragnar is shit but there is enough decent characters to keep it going.

    S5 teaser:

  2. You're right. She's super hot (almost 40 but looks hotter than most 20 somethings), but can't act. For long stretches of Vikings she's just a minor/side character. The lead for most of the show is Travis Fimmel, and he's quite good. That's actually a big part of the problem now. They killed him off, and her bad acting is becoming more obvious as she takes a bigger role in the show. I'm very conflicted though because I really enjoy watching her even though she's a bad actress because she's so damn hot.

  3. I loved this scene:

    Star Trek Discovery

I had low expectations based on the grumblings of Star Trek nerds on the internet, but it's surprisingly good. They took some liberties with the design of the Klingons. Makeup and CGI have come a long way from guys in blackface with plastic glued to their heads. I like that they've done away with the episodic format and gone to long story arcs like other modern shows. The production values are about on par with the recent JJ Abrams Star Trek movies.

    8/10

    The Orville

Bad, unfunny Star Trek parody/homage thing that shamelessly rips off Star Trek TNG. The makeup and CGI look really crappy. Seth McFarlane is annoying. The most recent episode I watched straight up stole the plot of an entire episode of Star Trek TNG.

  5. The Tick

It's like a more violent version of the 1966 Batman TV series with a touch of Jim Carrey's Mask. It's cheap and stupid but it makes me laugh so I'm kind of hooked.

  6. Giant Robot Dual tomorrow at 7 PDT.

  7. Started watching season 2 of Stranger Things. Halloween is the perfect time to start watching.

  8. Watched all of stranger things in the last week. First series was much better than the second which just felt like it was retreading old ground and without feeling new didn't do it for me.

  9. I felt the same way. It also lacked some of the chemistry between the characters that made the first season a hit, particularly the kids. The characters were so segmented and isolated in their own side stories that it lost some of the luster.

  10. I finished season 2. I liked it. I knew it would be hard to follow the first season. The separation of the characters seemed natural as they were all hitting that age when girls become important. I thought two of the episodes were a big departure but I can see why they did it.

Started watching Godless. It's good but watching Jeff Daniels as a bad guy feel weird.

  11. Vikings S5. Still a brilliant show.

  12. Finished Godless. It was kind of slow but worth watching if you feel like a traditional Western.

  13. Jonathan Creek

As a fan of whodunits, this was recommended to me by none other than Monsly on original forum. Finally after 8 years Amazon has it available to US audiences. For some bizarre reason I can only watch Season 4 and Season 5... but so far I'm liking it.

The majority of the mysteries are pretty clever with solutions plausibly grounded in reality. This was especially true when he was working with the TV reporter. She abruptly disappeared mid-season and was replaced by a blogger, which coincided with more fantasy elements, imo. The mystery he solves with the blogger + his wife was so ridiculous I thought I was watching Monk.

They poked fun at the absurdity of Sherlock in an episode, which is ironic, as this show seems to be headed in that direction. But without the style, soundtrack, and budget.

    Vikings S5

Show is getting really good again. Took awhile to find its stride without Ragnar. Jonathan Rhys Meyers is quite good as a warrior priest who slaughters heathens.

  15. Yeah its been good. Got the newest episode to watch tonight. Have you noticed how similar Ragnar taking Athelstan and Ivar taking the priest is though?

Yes, the current plot parallels the abduction of Athelstan, but it's also different. Ragnar and Athelstan became friends and shared their cultures and religions. Ivar and the Bishop are mortal enemies, and I don't see that changing. Also Athelstan put up with all kinds of crap in captivity because he was peaceful. The Bishop is a badass. Anyone who crosses him is likely to end up dead, and when they took him he was fighting like 50 dudes at once by himself.

  17. Over the course of last year I tackled a bunch of stuff I've been meaning to get watched while on my commute home. I saw the first 5 seasons of The Walking Dead. It was awesome and I can see why people loved it all these years. Around season 3 I began to wonder if it was as good as Breaking Bad, but seasons 4 and 5 kinda just shuffled along without much purpose, seasons 6 and 7 weren't included with Prime but I think they might be now, time to catch up.

I saw all 6 seasons of 3rd Rock From The Sun because I loved that show as a kid, and love it as an adult apparently.

And I consumed the entire original run of the X-Files, 9 seasons, in 3 months. What a ride that was. once I see the second film they did I'll crack on with the new seasons they recently made. Love me some X-Files.

I still need to see Stranger Things season 2, Black Mirror season 4 (amazing show), Brooklyn Nine Nine season 4, and a bunch of films I missed like Deadpool and Wonder Woman. Man so much great content to consume these days. Is it fair to say this is one of the best times for quality TV shows? Feels like it.

  18. Add Vikings to your list. I know how much you love Skyrim, and there are so many scenes in this show that look like something straight out of that game. It's action packed, gory, and Travis Fimmel is brilliant as King Ragnar. It also has Kat Winnick who is super hot. I think you'll enjoy it.

  19. Don't expect the new seasons of X files to be anything like the original series. It's entertaining but its not as good. Even the last two old seasons were better than these two new ones.

Vikings is a must in any TV show binge.
