What TV Shows Are You Watching?

  1. Cancelling Mindhunter was about the last straw for me, so I did some cancelling myself.

  2. David fincher's call. not Netflix.

  3. Weird critique. Both leads look like their cheeks are imploding inwards... I don't like it.

  4. Their faces look fine to me. I don't want to speculate if you're referring to another set of cheeks.

  5. Arrowverse is fire don’t @ me.

    The Expanse

I like the sci-fi universe they created and the story is good. But the casting, acting, and characterization are weak which makes the show hard to get into. Overall I thinks it’s just okay. It probably could have been great with better actors and a bigger budget.

  7. How much of The Expanse have you watched?

    I just finished Season 1

I liked the episode where the Martian warship was attacked by stealth ships. That was great. I thought the rest of the season was slow and the characters felt flat.

Many people have said it gets better so I will probably stick with it awhile longer. Sci-if is just such a dead genre at this point that I’m willing to give it a chance.

  9. It's a pretty highly regarded show by sci-fi geeks. It was on Syfy for the first half but has since been picked up by Amazon and extended through a 6th season. I think it starts a bit slow for a sci-fi series, but it is much more impressive as a series than a single season. It also does the girl power thing right without pandering and being obnoxious. They continue to build up the separate cultures of Earth, Mars, and the wacky Belters over time. It reminds me a bit of the Mass Effect series, particularly Shohreh Aghdashloo's politician character Chrisjen Avasarala, who I have no trouble picturing pissing off Commander Shepard by restricting his activities in some way had she not already been occupied with similar duties as one of the Quarian leaders restricting and pissing off Tali'Zorah. I'd give the actors more of a chance. Cara Gee is almost unrecognizable compared to her perpetually scowling and brooding ice queen character Drummer.

I've watched pretty far into season 2 now. It becomes a much, much better show. Like I'd say it's one of the better sci-fi shows I've watched up there with other greats like TNG and the BSG reboot. Season 1 had a lot of world building, but it really pays off and comes together in Season 2.

And I agree that it kind of feels like a prequel to something like Mass Effect or maybe the Freespace games.

I also agree about it doing female empowerment the right way. You have characters who are strong leaders or soldiers or whatever who just happen to be women. It doesn't do it in some obnoxious feminist way like a lot of stuff now.

  11. The Irregulars

It's okay. It basically a woke Scooby Doo mystery show with that is historically inaccurate. I don't see it lasting but I could be wrong.

    A Discovery of Witches

This seems really good at first but then it went all Twilight and I got bored with it.

  12. Loki looks really good.

  13. The Expanse S3

This show just gets better and better. I now think it might be the best sci-fi show I've ever watched.

  14. I ended up binge watching Season 1 of Titans on HBOMax this weekend. It was way better than I expected. I'd seen an episode or so in the past, but being able to see the entire season was much better. It has a darker tone than I would have expected for a Teen Titans show, which I liked. I plan on watching the second season in the near future.

  15. After seeing a few of you going full fanboy over the Expanse I decided to give it a go. I have watched all of the first series and am about 5 episodes in to the second.

I would deffo say the first is quite slow, it takes a while to get going and at times it is more of a political drama than a sci-fi but it deffo gets better as you go along.

Season 1 is a lot of world building and it's quite slow with the exception of the attack on the Martian warship and the mercenaries using Eros as a test site for the protomolecule. It's worth sticking it out though. It pays off in very satisfying ways when it all comes together. I like how it starts with near future stuff that's all plausible. I think it's why it hits much harder when you start seeing alien stuff. And the alien stuff is legitimately alien. It's not the Star Trek version of aliens where it's guys with plastic glued to their heads who speak English.

Jeff Bezos himself is a big fan of the show. You see a huge bump in the budget once it reaches Amazon.

    • like like x 1
  17. I am towards the end of the second series now so have seen bits and pieces of the alien molecule as well as what happened on Eros.

The one thing I do find odd is the way it just drops some characters, like the first started building up a role for Jay Hernandez as Havelock, and then after he ends up in hospital you never see or hear from him again, just gone completely.

I finished S5 of the Expanse. Overall it's a really good show despite being uneven in parts and starting off slow. I'd probably give it an 8.5 or 9 out of 10.

  19. I'm almost done with the first season. It's good. Not great. Good to know it will get better.

All of the seasons are good to great overall, but it really peaks with season 3. Season 3 was some of the best sci fi I've ever seen on TV. That season was a 10/10. As good or maybe even better than anything I've seen in Trek or the BSG reboot. If the entire show had been like that I would have said it's the GOAT. Instead I would just say it's overall about on par with Star Trek TNG or the BSG Reboot at about a 9/10. Even my wife who isn't that into sci-fi really got into Season 3 of this show.
