What TV Shows Are You Watching?

  1. I finished S2 last night so will be moving on to S3 later.

  2. I would deffo say The Expanse takes a downward turn when the first big story seems to end from the middle point of S3 and then S4 has been a lot worse than anything that came before it. It just seems like they have gone full stereotypical sci-fi now. I will finish it and do S5 as I have put the time in now but I am disappointed with how things have gone. Started slow, ended up good in the middle but now, generic sci-fi. Lets hope S5 can save it and S4 was a blip.

That's actually my big criticism of the Expanse. Once faster than light travel is introduced with the rings, it becomes like conventional sci-fi. Season 4 is like an overlong Star Trek episode. And Season 5 has an over the top villain who would be right at home in a Star Trek movie.

  4. Finished Wanda Vision and started on the The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. I guess Disney has decided to go with a blurred lines kind of thing between bad guys and good guys.

  5. Jupiter’s Legacy.

It’s ok. Kinda heavy on the morality and has some lame dialog. It’s a lot of “I do a dance move before shooting energy beam” types with some other pretty tropey superhero types.

The costumes kinda suck. It takes itself a bit too seriously.

But there is a wrinkle. One of the characters has no powers and isn’t Batman. But he’s got a cool teleportation device that is pretty goddamn interesting. Might be worth watching for that, but who knows. It’s still early and he is not a main. But honestly he should be. It’s an interesting tool and he’s an interesting character.

The Boys is probably better. This is basically “Superman had kids and wasn’t the best dad”.

  6. After S5 Ep1 I think I have ditched the Expanse now, after the closure of the first story arc part way through S3, I fell out of love. Forced myself to finish S4 but it hasn't improved. I find James far too 'goody two shoes' to put up with now, he always has to be the good guy and it is annoying.

Still love the Amos character, easily the best character of the show.

  7. I watched the first 3 episodes of The Queen's Gambit in one sitting this weekend. I was really concerned they were really going to feminist it up in this one when I first heard about the show given chess historically being overwhelmingly dominated by male competitors. As others have said, it doesn't push the activist bullshit much (just a few bits in a couple of scenes) and has been quite good so far. Beth is a very imperfect and troubled character, which usually signifies the writer isn't a social justice cultist because SJWs can't write a good character if their lives depended on it.

  8. I had a hard time seeing Harry Melling as anything other than the torso from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

  9. Invincible

Of the off Marvel/DC comic shows like The Boys, Jupiter’s Legacy, I liked this one the best. Maybe it’s the whole animated thing where it’s easier to draw something than film it.

It’s a interesting take on the alien Superman story. Lots of blood and guts. Lots of punching. Actually it’s mostly punching now that I think about it. Not too many interesting hero powers tbh. Someone can do like energy shields, a girl can multiply herself, a dude has bombs but it’s mostly punching really hard and increasingly so.

The villains are pretty good. But it’s mostly a coming of age story about the son of the worlds Superman. He can’t shoot lasers though from what I can tell.

It boils down to a big picture vs save everyone type of debate. I like it.

  10. Finished Season 3 of The Expanse. I still like it.

  11. Invincible

The new Amazon Prime animated super hero series. It's sort of like Justice League but with gore and not every good guy is good.

  12. Finished season 1 of Loki. It's a good show, worth a watch. Also started the Harley Quinn animated series. It's like Venture Bros in the DC universe.

  13. I watched the Danish mini-series The Investigation/ Efterforskningen on HBO Max and was very impressed. It was well acted and posed a very curious scenario of an incident that was based on the investigation of the death of a real life Swedish journalist Kim Wall. It's was also interesting to see Pilou Asbaek as a straightlaced prosecutor cautiously accumulating evidence to support his case after seeing him as a psychopathic and sadistic murderer Euron Greyjoy in Game of Thrones. I can't think of any significant weaknesses of the show other than the main character's daughter being an unbearable, selfish brat I wanted to slap on multiple occasions. Jens Moller, Pernilla August, and Asbaek are all very good in their roles. The characters all have flaws, make mistakes, and seem like real people you could encounter. I'd definitely recommend this show if you have access to it.

  14. I recently watched all 3 marvel shows. they were all fun in their own right. Loki was very different since it was its own adventure separated from the regular avengers stuff.

falcon and winter soldier gave closure to the capt america story left over from avengers end game.

wandavision finally addressed wanda's state of mind after she literally had Vision die twice in front of her in infinity war.

  15. Watched one episode of The White Lotus. My wife said it had bad acting but I think it was just weird.

  16. Masters of the Universe: Revelation

The show is rather controversial with the fans but I say they did a great job with it. It's a must watch if you're an old school He-Man fan.

  17. I’ll second the Masters of the Universe. Was pretty alright.

  18. I'm a good few episodes in to Masters of the Universe and have been finding it quite good. The only downside I see is that they are trying to make it more adult with swearing etc but then when someone took a saw to the face they cut away so need to make their mind up.

On holiday (Vacation to you Americans) so been interrupted and will continue when I get home.

  19. Bwahaha. That saw to the face scene made me do a double take. I was wondering how they were going to PG it, but they just cut away.

  20. Damn I hadn't heard of this. I loved the 80's He-Man movie with Ivan Drago.
